I resigned from
@UniLeicBusiness
after 11 years when it became clear that the values of
@uniofleicester
could no longer be reconciled with my own. I have one remaining PhD student and one live funded project. Once theyโre done, so am I with this callous and shameful institution
We wrote polite, well reasoned letters. We signed mass petitions. Many thousands of people have painstaking pointed out how and why
@uniofleicester
is wrong. And now we arrive at a place no academic and no institution ever wants to be

UCU announces a global boycott of the University of Leicester.
The university also faces a marking & assessment boycott that begins today.

Thinking of all my friends being unnecessarily and cruelly made redundant by
@uniofleicester
tomorrow. A disastrous backward step for
@UniLeicBusiness
. No good will come of any of this, for anyone involved
I canโt believe it has to be pointed out again that
@uniofleicester
can either sack colleagues in a pandemic or be serious about mental health. It indisputably cannot do both
#BoycottLeicester
I did this same course four years ago. By the time I finished it, two out of the three facilitators had left
@uniofleicester
because they could no longer reconcile the institutionโs values with their own. Sixth months later I was done too. What an employer!
#boycottleicester
Two years ago I did the
@uniofleicester
's Future Leaders Programme. One of my key take home messages from that was that I am highly motivated by my core values, and an effective leader when I believe my values align with those of the organisation I work for. Oh well, your loss!
Simon was an exemplary Head of School. Caring, scholarly, supportive and fiercely protective of his staff. Under his leadership
@UniLeicBusiness
thrived and was a highly rated, internationally leading School. The difference from the current leadership could not be starker
What's that Skip? Notice of dismissal for me because
@UniLeicBusiness
aims 'to be a sector leader with a strong sense of social purpose and enterprise' & thus must 'disinvest from research and scholarship in critical management studies and political economy'? Logic at its finest!
Hey
@UniLeicBusiness
@uniofleicester
I hear youโre trying to make redundant all your world renowned academics in political economy and social dimensions of business. So how come these are the things you want to promote in the past couple of months? 1/n
@leicesterucu
External examiners, professional associations, alumni, journal editors. Even members of the House of Lords. All respectfully saying
@uniofleicester
has got it very wrong. It really is time to listen
#NoOneIsRedundant
I have just tendered my resignation as an external examiner in the English department at the University of Leicester in response to the planned cuts to the programme and proposed redundancies.
Weโll be teaching this as a case study in mismanagement in the future. It already has a name โleicesterisationโ. The only degree of control left to
@uniofleicester
is to immediately halt redundancies to negotiate a way out of permanent global academic boycott
#boycottleicester
What exactly happened at
@uniofleicester
? The answers relate mostly to governance failure, leading to poor management choices, leading to declining cash flows, whilst high risk, leveraged projects were committed to. Thread ๐
Saying goodbye to my Nan tomorrow. Working class woman from North London, her and my grandad gave me these when I was little. Much treasured, they opened up my world.
Cheers Chris
@uniofleicester
@leicesterucu
@timeshighered
Do you want to clarify why you failed to respond to the tens of thousands of academics have respectfully pointed out the problems with your unreasonable behaviour? Or do you just want to mark your own work?
There are now so many pieces of evidence and testimony freely available in the public sphere that directly contradict practically every assertion here that one wonders whether this, in fact, richly nuanced performance art
#BoycottLeicester
The University of Leicester are keen to bombard us with emails stating how much they care for our mental health and wellbeing during this pandemic. Colleagues threatened with redundancies are finding it hard to feel the love.
As a former employee
@uniofleicester
Iโm really sad and disappointed to hear this. The university is not its senior managers or council. It is ALL STAFF, ALL STUDENTS, ALL ALUMNI. And what I hear from them is a call for an immediate change of direction from this disastrous policy
3/ I've never seen staff morale so low
@uniofleicester
in 9 years I've worked here. That's saying something. We've been on strike 3 times for sustained periods since Feb 2018 because of terrible working conditions. We don't do that without major cause
Thinking of friends and colleagues threatened with redundancy

Iโve spent the majority of my career teaching in Business Schools which typically return around 65/75% of their income to support STEM subjects which lose money hand over fist. And Iโm delighted to do so because knowledge isnโt a competition and has intrinsic value
I actually do enjoy the fact that arts and humanities are so intrinsically interesting, fun, and life-enriching that the government have a whole team dedicated to warning students off it, and loads of students are still like, yeah, no, I'm still going to do the awesome course.
No confidence in leaders from student and staff. Threats by management sent to staff, PGRs, emeritus. Work by researchers to be made redundant used for REF. Tell me again how this is โshaping for excellenceโ ??
@UniLeicBusiness
@uniofleicester
Woke up with a vague creeping feeling of dread, but everything is actually OK because somewhere I know that there are alpacas on the grass in front of the well-being marquee
This really is a shamelessly unethical move by

My vote for UCU NEC clearly with

An amazing colleague, committed activist and inspiration on the physical and virtual picket line. But you already knew that, right?
What a disaster for
@UniLeicBusiness
Marta is an outstanding academic who chose to come to
@uniofleicester
but is no longer willing to work there. It takes many years to build a successful university and months for the current managers to trash and demolish it
#boycottleicester
I have resigned from
@uniofleicester
. I was not at risk of redundancy. I have not been through the awful process that our colleagues had to endure, but I have experienced more than a glimpse of the lack of care, lack of interest, lack of human touch and lack of intellectualism

Why would you want to not have

I spent the first half of last year in a perpetual state of disbelief and rage at the outrageous and unfair treatment of colleagues. A year later and I still feel the same - as do many, many others, no doubt
Today marks the anniversary of one of the most disgraceful redundancy processes & management debacles in the recent history of UK HE, a dismal tale of authoritarian management and contempt for academic values and exhausted staff in a pandemic. You deserve better,
