So as usual Barnard admin reveals its monstrosity. Seniors went to a beautiful graduation ceremony at the Cathedral of St. John Divine & now are barred from getting the rest of their belongings on direct order of Laura Rosenbury.

Barnard gave arrested students 15 minutes to get necessities from their rooms. They used timers. Admins need to get off whatever listserv is sharing the “needlessly heartless & cruel approaches to student life” playbook.
I’m hearing that all the UVA students arrested yesterday have been barred from coming on campus. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some of them live on campus, so they’re now homeless, having to stay with off campus friends. They cannot easily access their possessions on campus obviously.
I was behind a woman & her kids on a Paris floght, where the husband came back from 1st class to “visit” his family. Each time he put his hand over my video screen. 3rd time after asking him to stop, I slapped his hand. PPL like this are 360 assholes.
Funny, i got similar advice - don’t be controversial, etc. But very little advice on what to do when your very presence is controversial or anger-inducing to certain populations w/social power. Must be nice to be able to create your bubble & disappear into alleged objectivity
Advice I got early in my career: Don’t over engage in any controversy unless you are willing to stake your entire reputation on it. Rather, keep focused on discovering new things & creating, or else you become known for the controversy & nothing else; there is no going back.
So my Mom was kinda upset that I didn’t participate in formal graduation for PhD (I just wanted to be done and be gone). So they had a party & she did a formal invitation on her own.

I have terrible seasonal allergies and got a PCR test today because i was at a big public event. Sadly, the testing stands in NYC have evaporated without emergency funding, so even fewer people will get tests and assume it’s allergies.

PSA for non-science folks: Wonder why everyone is emphasizing hand washing? Sounds banal, but soap really IS an amazing weapon that we all have in our homes. This is because coronavirus is an "enveloped" virus, which means that it has an outer lipid membrane layer.
