If you reserve hotel rooms via Priceline or Agoda, you are either 1) dumb 2) dumber or 3) both. Now I’ve insulted millions of people, let's dive in. Here's why hotel owners hate these companies. And why travelers should too. To start, both are fully owned by Booking Holdings.

Back in my college days I used to DJ and remix songs. Never saw it as a career, but always thought it could be a lucrative side hustle. So when a friend said they would pay me $50 to play a frat party, I was pumped. (min wage was $5.15 at the time!) Getting paid for

Has been fun getting our team involved create our social content. Of course they found a room loaded with Busch Light. GRWM style videos are popular and everyone loves a good before/after. Doubt this will drive bookings, but that's not really the point. Infinite scrolling

Retaining quality employees is one of the hardest things to do as a hotel owner. Have many black eyes but have slowly improved our process. Enough to know it starts with a solid job posting. I've poured over hundreds and most of them suck. Too long, too much corporate b.s.,

Registration cards at hotels are lame. They waste paper, waste time, and make you feel like an inmate, not a guest. What's your license plate number?! So we got rid of them (reason #642 I love being an independent hotel) They did serve a purpose though. It had all the info

Want to know what would be better? Pick any city in the world. Drop me and Michael Patel off with $100,000,000. No AAHOA, no volleyball, $100,000,000 Let’s see who gets to 90% occupancy first, then who IRS audits first, then who knocks up a housekeeper first. Pick your

@JWurzak Sorry to hear that man. Seems like the start of a lengthy legal / pr battle. Have all 200 employees show up to the next hearing, get local news involved, etc. Only sets a precedent if you roll over.

In the US, more houses have pets than kids. Now seeing prescription drug ads...for dogs. If that's not a sign for hotels to go pet friendly, not sure what is. We got rid of smoking rooms years ago. Only to replace them with Pet Friendly rooms 🙄

I don't know how SMBs run without a Notion hub. Just got a DM on how to best get a handbook started. My response: It's easy to get overwhelmed (you and your team). Start slowly by attacking the topics that give you grief. My lightbulb moment was when someone came to work

I’m in a sweet spot where I genuinely have a killer following. Quality > quantity. From the start I’ve been trying to give more than I take. Mostly ramblings as a 2nd gen hotel owner. How it’s ok to build upon what my parents started. How hotels are incredibly taxing, but

Thankful for Alex and weirdly proud for his success as a fellow Iowan. I followed nearly an identical path so his post hit home. Hotel twitter is a small place and new accts don't pop up often. So it's a good day when others join and start dropping the sauce @astronautapu

Franchising is a killer concept. You get battle tested business systems + branding + support served on a silver platter. Just pay a tidy sum up front. Then % of revenue after. Oh and a 20 year contract. It's all good bro! But what if the business systems are garbage? What

Most franchise hotels are forced to pay upwards of $2/room/month for wifi support from a preferred vendor. For us that would be nearly $200/mo. $200/mo for a 1800 number no one will call. This is dumb for a few reasons: 1) When wifi is installed properly, ongoing issues are

Translation -> you ain't getting that upgrade! Inevitable result of big chain "loyalty" programs requires telling 99% of the population to go pound sand. A guest that stays with us once a year is infinitely more loyal than a point snob who gets high off status matching. I
