Yesterday in Jerusalem at my son’s wedding with my uncle Shmuel Hoechster, born 1923 in Fürth Germany, class mate of Henry Kissinger, and Auschwitz survivor. He will celebrate this coming weekend with his clan of 170, 11 children, 75 grand children and XX great grandchildren.

Today the Knesset passed the Foreign Agunot law, proposed by the CER, as a permanent law, unanimously. On this third eve of Hanukkah we lit a light of hope in the homes of dozens of chained women outside of Israel, who got married according to Jewish law.

Bernie Sanders’s video “Proud to be Jewish” unfortunately defines Jewishness only in the negative sense, because of antisemites and antisemitism. Surprisingly very similar to Soviet Jews, who were able to define their Jewishness only with antisemitism.

A worthy endeavour. However, Evan is not the only political prisoner in Russia and Byelorussia. Thousands of people are being held in prisons in Russia and Byelorussia, among them Alexei Navalny, Vladimir Kara Murza, Ilya Yashin and others, many, who are of Jewish descent.

I think that the carving should stay to document the history of antisemitism in the church. A plaque should be put next to it to explain the religious origins and the dire results of antisemitism! Don’t rewrite history, explain it to today’s youth!

Albert Reichmann played a critical role in enabling the Refusenik revolution of the 70’s & 80’s and was perhaps the most prolific builder of Jewish life in the FSU in the 90’s. The 1000’s of children educated in the Shema Yisroel network of schools are his spiritual descendants.
