Ashanti and Benin were regarded as politically complex societies by European Explorers, and did not have "Stick huts". As far as Slaves, Ethiopia was on par With Ghana, and this before considering that the Ashanti weren't the only sellers. Benin was even less.

Technically Bantus were likely in that area at that point. It's doubtful however that they were a stratified Kingdom. Precolonial polities typically have roots within the Medieval era, anything prior being more basic settlements of varying density or broader ethnic affiliation.
