3pm on a January afternoon. Solar panels generating 1.8kW, enough to provide most of the power to the heat pump keeping the house at a comfortable 21C. Solar thermal system pre-heating the hot water tank to 30C. Surprising what you can do on our cold, cloudy, rainy little island.
A vast plume of Saharan dust is blowing across the Atlantic towards the Caribbean. The dust can suppress hurricane formation by reducing sunlight. It's also known to carry nutrients from dried lake beds in Africa which fertilise the Amazon rainforest.
Walking through the woods today I heard a rustle in the dried beech leaves, and turned to see this little beauty tucking in at the base of a tree. Hissed impressively as I leant in to take its picture!
One of the highlights of my broadcasting career, reading the Shipping Forecast on
@BBCRadio4
(even when it did come in significantly over the agreed word count)
Happy 100th birthday to the Shipping Forecast!
First broadcast on New Year's Day 1924
My initial
@metoffice
training included a day with the forecaster preparing the Shipping Forecast. It felt quite special to hear him rehearse aloud carefully-worded drafts to get it just right
Think I'm becoming orchid obsessed. Chalk fragrant, bee, fly and military orchids all spotted in the last couple of days - what a treat

It's

weekend, so the birds that normally inhabit the garden are again hiding in the shrubs and laughing at me. Joke's wearing a bit thin, guys.
Started my mini-meadow during

a couple of years ago. Speedwell looking good, but might have overdone the Yellow Rattle seeding!

Spare a thought this Christmas for reporters across the land, sent to stand alone on motorway bridges to recite solemn warnings of the big holiday getaway, as traffic flows unhindered below.
I did this today, because I've had enough of the amplified voices of hate, extremism and ideology. Today, the quiet voices joined together to make themselves heard.
First ever scheduled flight from Sao Paulo to Mount Pleasant

leaving soon. Could be a game changer for business and tourism access to the islands through this major hub.
The rather depressing side of conservation work. Every one of the canes in that pile represents a failed sapling. Enthusiastic tree planting is great, but targeted aftercare is vital to avoid wasted effort.
A blue haze of speedwell across my 6 sq m mini meadow, started last year. Delighted to see yellow rattle sprouting from the seed I scattered last autumn!

from our balloon-borne 360deg camera at an altitude of 17km/55,000ft over Texas. A first, as far as we know! 20x normal speed, with orientation switched through 180deg at midpoint to show shadow moving away.
It's such a shame that the topic of 'garden rewilding' has become unnecessarily polarised. My garden today has scores of bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies flitting around the beds. Dragonflies, newts and toads in the pond. Does it look like a neglected wilderness? No.
Anyone else finding that a lot of the flowers on their spring bulbs, especially the smaller ones, are being chomped to oblivion? Just the base of these scylla left, snowdrops were also badly hit and some narcissi. Slugs and snails awake earlier due to mildness?
Skating the canals of Amsterdam. The city authorities closed the locks in advance of the cold snap to stop water flow and increase the chance of solid ice.
Aerial views of some of yesterday's thunderstorms over NE England, showing classic anvil shape of mature cumulonimbus. Impressive overshooting tops too!
Sadly weโve had to cancel audience recordings of GQT. But the show must go on! Weโre going to be answering your gardening questions remotely, so send them to us via email or Twitter and you may have your question answered on

Have to say, this is a particularly fine edition of
@GWandShows
this evening. Loads of solid practical advice, intriguing and inspirational gardens and their gardeners, and cracking features on roses and hydrangeas - bravo!
I was chuffed to pick up 23mm (nearly an inch) of rain for the garden yesterday, but scratch the surface and the moisture only goes down a few cm. Shows how much is going to be needed to counteract the effect of the drought.
They built the nursery business after their farm was devastated by foot and mouth. Internationally important plant collectors and conservationists. So hope they make it through the turbulence.
The wonderful
@crugfarmplants
, probably the most cutting-edge, dynamic nursery in the country, talking openly and honestly about the impact brexit could have on her business.
So much on the line for UK horticulture.

The radiators are ticking along at 40C and the heat pump is drawing around 2kW to keep them that way. It's generating around 3 times as much as it's using. So basically heating a 4-bed detached with the equivalent of a 2-bar electric fire on one of coldest days of winter.
