Today, I had a student who arrived 8 mins late, had incorrect uniform, and no equipment. On arrival they were immediately issued a detention. That student had to wake themselves up because parent was intoxicated. They’d not eaten and no money for the bus. They’d walked 2 miles.

To add, this isn’t a student at my school, it was something sent to me. They are receiving pastoral support and have been for a long time. The awareness is to be careful about our very first interaction when they arrive.

A student got caught smoking weed on Friday. A fuming teacher brought him, wanting immediate punishment. After 10 mins of hearing about his life/home situation, it’s no wonder he’s taken to weed. The lad needs immediate help, not punishment! So we got him help! #PastoralThings

Is it just me, or is one of the biggest challenges in school at the moment ‘apathy’? Not wanting to do more than the minimum, not wanting to challenge themselves. How do you tackle that? #PastoralThings #EduTwitter

I had a fizzy drink. I shook it, threw it around, bashed it. I then passed it to someone else to open. All looked fine. But the tiniest act of unscrewing the lid caused it to explode. If someone explodes at the smallest thing, you don’t know what’s gone on before. #MentalHealth

The Ed Sec @GillianKeegan is so out of touch with the reality of struggles currently being faced in schools: the lack of funding, the lack of specialist teachers, the lack of recruitment and retention, the lack of wage increase, the lack of external services. It’s staggering!

How many Heads of Year take the time after school to watch their year group in extra-curricular activities? Watching the football/netball team, going into different clubs to show an interest, have a conversation, and even join in? I’ve started, and found it really beneficial.

Nigel Farage is a bully. He shouts over people, he refuses to listen. He uses nothing more than bull-boy tactics. He is a disgrace. Yet he is the most cheered on person on the panel. This is the state that politics is in at the moment in the UK. What an absolute mess!! #bbcqt

Having a positive relationship with the child is so valuable in school. That doesn’t mean you ‘let them get away with anything’. Quite the opposite actually. A relationship also allows you to correct and discipline where needed, and they respect that too! Build relationships!

With a few weeks left before the Christmas holidays, it's likely we will see a deterioration in some behaviours. Perhaps due to school being the safe place that will disappear for a couple weeks. Perhaps because it brings back bad memories. It could be many things. Just be aware.

The reaction of MP’s over the teachers striking is infuriating me. All of a sudden for MP’s, it’s about the interests of the children. Weren’t so worried about the interests of the children when they sat in the House of Commons voting against Free School Meals. #EduTwitter

I actually want to be in school and working. My issue is that there is a complete lack of acknowledgement from the government around the dangers in our schools and the risk teachers and school staff are under on a daily basis, as well as the students. A complete disregard.

Academic achievement is no good if we don’t ensure we teach our young people the importance of empathy, kindness, love and respect. Yes, academic success is important for some, but ensuring they leave school knowing how to be a valuable member of society is vital for all!

I have a 12yo. She doesn’t struggle with issues on platforms such as SnapChat/TiKTok. She doesn’t struggle with them, because she doesn’t have them. That’s our choice as parents. We communicate the difficulties of SM with her. I don’t expect her school to have that responsibility

An increase in poor behaviour the last few days. For most, Christmas is a joyful time, a time of laughter, and time with family. For some, it’s horrible. If there’s a sudden deterioration in behaviour, be aware of circumstances/what this time means for them. Be understanding.

If I haven’t returned your call after 35 minutes, it’s not because I’m ignoring you. It’s because I have a year group of 170 students, attend various meetings, and have plenty of other phone calls to make. But I will get back to you! #PastoralThings #EduTwitter

When managing behaviour, if your unwilling to dig deeper in order to understand and discover the root of the issue, you will only deal with it superficially. It may appear to be sorted, but eventually the issues will arise again. Dig deeper! #PastoralThings #EduTwitter #Behaviour

I’ve said it before, there is a huge need for teachers to have Pastoral CPD, and for pastoral staff to have Teaching CPD. There needs to be an understanding and a mutual respect for the roles. This can only have a positive impact for the students. #PastoralThings #EduTwitter

Due to the Bank Holidays, strikes, Easter break, we have seen a rise in disruptive behaviour and defiance in school. We all know it, but the last few weeks have highlighted just how vital consistency and routine is for our young people. When that’s unsettled, they’re unsettled!

Beneath every behaviour there is a feeling. And beneath each feeling is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behaviour, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom. Love this quote I have seen! Shame I can’t credit it to whoever said it… so true!

I think we’re really now starting to see the impact of Covid, especially around anxiety/MH. Since Covid, referrals to CAMHS have increased by around 80%. Staffing and funding certainly hasn’t! Schools/Services are overwhelmed and we’ll be feeling the impact for years to come.

As we approach a new academic year, no matter what your role in school, make sure you have a small group around you who you trust and can confide in. It’s a tough job and important to be able to talk and offload. Preferably people outside of school! #PastoralThings #EduTwitter

A bottle of coke appears to be fine until you drop a few mentos into it. Then it explodes. In these times of struggle and challenges, don’t be the one to drop a few mentos into someone’s situation. Be aware! Be kind! #PastoralThings #EduTwitter #MentalHealth #BeKind

One of the biggest challenges I find as a non-teaching Head of Year is the conflicting nature of the role, especially around being seen as an ‘authoritative figure’ around behaviour, and then also a ‘counsellor’ figure for the students to go to. #PastoralThings #EduTwitter

I can’t think of a job where I would phone them up, verbally abuse them, tell them how bad they are, and what they should be doing. This academic year, I’ve had more of this than before as a HOY, as have teachers. Almost as if it is now the norm. #PastoralThings #EduTwitter
