Great turnout from PhDs at the Dáil today demanding livable incomes & equal pay for all

Increase of €500 in stipends for PhD students funded through SFI and IRC. Postgraduate fee contribution grant to increase by €500, benefiting approximately 2,400 students.

Average annual rent in Dublin: €22,920
Max. annual PhD stipend in Ireland: €18,500
Someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this! The future of Irish research is dying 🫠

@PhDVoice
TCD's decision to further increase their high rents during a cost of living crisis that have people stretched to the limits is totally out of line with their claims of concern for student & PGR welfare.
Housing for need, not for greed.
We believe
@LindaDoyle
’s recent email addressing
@tcdsu
’s campaign against increases in master’s fees is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent for students’ rights and activism on campus. Let’s unpack what’s wrong! 🧵
A €500 increase for a few but not all PhDs falls far short of what we need + deserve
Campaigning forced govt to recognise us in
#Budget2023
, escalation will bring us closer to livable incomes & working rights
Soon we'll host an open meeting to build for that action, join us 💪
A long overdue increase for IRC stipends announced today for all existing & new scholarships. An increase of €16,000 to €18,500! However, the increase still does not fully cover fees & is not equivalent to the living wage. A great start but more reform to come!
#PostgradRights
Full support and

They're asking for basics, for pay equality & respect for their profession. 20% of medical scientist posts are vacant, this cannot continue.
Govt must act. Show your support if you're near a picket today💪
The motion to remove the Mandate of support between TCDSU and PWO TCD has failed to pass. We look forward to putting these events behind us, working on the underlying issues which lead to such a motion being tabled and working alongside the SU in solidarity once again.
It’s such a slap in the face to people actually pursuing a PhD in Ireland to see someone like Bertie Ahern being awarded an honorary degree - a man whose government left the country in such a state that there is now a €307 million funding gap in the higher education sector 🙃
The conferring of an honorary doctorate on the former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and the peace activist Monica McWilliams has been interrupted by a group of student protesters
Costs are rising & so are we. Amazing turnout at the

While the announcement from TCD today that they will increase internal funding to 25k, we are disappointed to see that the measures do not extend far enough to cover those covered by departmental funding as well 1/6https://
College is to increase the stipend for three postgraduate research schemes to €25k annually, starting from September.
TCD PWO called the increase "a step in the right direction".
Average PhD stipend: ~€16k
TD salary, before expenses or allowances: €102,204
TD salaries have increased several times since this govt took office. PhD stipends (for some) have been increased once in the last decade.

Wise words spoken by
@ShaakyaV
and others in this piece.
A PhD is a skilled, full-time commitment and PhD researchers deserve a living income.
Good to see this point recognised more and more across our sector and in the media.
#PhDRights
PhD stipends are untaxed but still far below a livable income. We, a group of low paid workers struggling to keep our heads above water will not get this tax credit or any other support towards renting.
@SimonHarrisTD
@DarraghOBrienTD
Looks €12 weekly increase in welfare payments and State pension is now agreed. Permanent €500 tax credit for renters. €1000 cut to third level fees this year and €500 next year. Plus 30-40% of energy increases for businesses and farms will be returned in payment by Revenue
Seanad bye election candidate and Green Party councillor Hazel Chu has said that PhD students and postdoctoral researchers will leave Ireland if they continue to be paid less than the living wage
Huge thanks to everyone who showed up to our postering & pints event! It was great seeing so many PhD researchers getting involved. It is clear that a change must be made to the current PhD system in Ireland!

@NathanCAGray
@GaRoDean
My honest to take is that postgraduate students aren't employees.
I worry about stipends that are overly generous because in my view a hungry hunter is the best hunter. I also think a lot of this as being driven by reasonable envy of industry linked stem stipends
We are incredibly disappointed & frustrated with

What Ireland says about itself on the global stage is totally out of step with what it values in practice.
If research and innovation are truly crucial to our society and economy, then researchers must be valued accordingly.
At the minute we barely survive.
A fantastic summary plot about the average PhD salary, cost of living and their ratio for different countries.
Unsurprisingly in Spain (and in many other countries) a PhD stipend is below the cost of living.

It is hard to put into words the deep disappointment that postgrads feel toward the running of the

At a chaotic EGM, GSU members shot down a proposal to formally divest from Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union – but only on the second vote, after the results of the first vote were deemed unclear
Homes for need, not greed!

Good news for future PhD researchers but we need to go further.
If €28k is what govt believe it takes to recruit + retain PhDs, all PhDs should receive an increase.
Beyond this, we'll keep fighting for an employment based model + to end precarity across Irish universities! 💪
Delighted to announce Innovate for Ireland - a partnership between Government and industry to help Ireland retain and recruit research talent.
We want to grow the next leaders in research and respond to the great challenges of our time.

Denmark also considers it's PhDs employees with living wages, pensions and working benefits. Denmark has similar sized economy and population to Ireland. It invests 2x the amount of money in higher ed. & research while also having excellent public services🤔1/3
