Provisional ERA5 global temperature for 17th November from
@CopernicusECMWF
was 1.17Β°C above 1991-2020 - the warmest on record.
Our best estimate is that this was the first day when global temperature was more than 2Β°C above 1850-1900 (or pre-industrial) levels, at 2.06Β°C.
Unprecedented!

New data from
@CopernicusECMWF
shows that we've now had:
- the eighth record breaking month in a row and
- twelve months (Feb 23-Jan 24) with global temperatures more than 1.5ΒΊC above the pre-industrial reference baseline.
February 2024 was the warmest February on record according to
@CopernicusECMWF
1.77Β°C warmer than pre-industrial
9th record breaking month in a row
Global temperatures for the past 12 months are the highest on record, at 1.56Β°C above pre-industrial

2023 was an exceptional year with climate records tumbling like dominoes. Not only is 2023 the warmest year on record, it is also the first year with all days over 1Β°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.

@CopernicusECMWF
indicates that 17 November was the first day that the global temperature exceeded 2Β°C above pre-industrial levels, reaching 2.07Β°C above the 1850-1900 average and the provisional ERA5 value for 18 November is 2.06Β°C.

2023 marks the first time on record that every day within a year has exceeded 1Β°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial level.
The first days above 1ΒΊC were way back in the early 1990s. First days above 1.5ΒΊC were back in the strong El NiΓ±o events of 2016 and 2020.
New data from Copernicus Climate
@CopernicusECMWF
shows the record for the extra-polar ocean (60ΒΊN-60ΒΊS) has been broken over the last few days.
New record is 21.05ΒΊC.
Previous record was 21.02ΒΊC set in August 2023
Why was 2023 so warm?
The particularly large anomalies in the final four months of 2023 are associated with significant contributions from both ocean and land, primarily from the tropics (over ocean) and the northern extratropics (over land).
