Catherine wants you to know that they’re doing well. Last week was a heartbreaker … but it was only a setback.
Cat brought us together into a movement — an unstoppable force in creating the
#Ottawa
we deserve.
Stay strong. Stay hopeful. Stay tuned for what comes next …
Today,
@cmckenney
and I launched
@City_SHAPES
, a new national nonprofit helping municipalities and communities to build the cities we deserve.
Join us at
Together, let’s move the needle on climate action, housing, transportation and city governance.
Proud to support
@cmckenney
for our next mayor. Catherine knows how City Council works, supports smart, green development, has a fully costed program that prudently uses our tax dollars, & will continue to stand up for all to make Ottawa an even better place for everyone.
We can do this.
It’s an incredibly tight race. But we have an edge.
WE WANT IT MORE.
3 things we all can do to get
@cmckenney
across the finish line …
(1/6)
One part of
@cmckenney
’s financial plan that deserves more attention is how Ottawa can build $250m in safe cycling infrastructure in a way that is cost-neutral to taxpayers.
This graphic from the plan (which I helped develop) lays it out, but let me elaborate ... (1/5)
New data shows that very few cyclists and pedestrians are using Queen Elizabeth Driveway when it's closed to cars. Watch this video as a great example. When I recorded it yesterday afternoon, not a single pedestrian or cyclist passed me for the entire two and a half minutes.…
Jeff Lieper calling out
@_MarkSutcliffe
(on FB) for going against City policy on active transportation. Good on you, Cllr!
Which Cllr will now call out the Mayor for what he is really doing: OSEG’s bidding to turn QED into a Lansdowne express route?
A vision for a better Ottawa. The courage to fight for us. The integrity to do the right thing.
That’s why I’m doing everything I possibly can to help
@cmckenney
become Ottawa’s next mayor.
When
@_MarkSutcliffe
talks about a “balanced” approach to transportation … tell him that the City of Ottawa has:
6,043 km of roads
23 km of separated cycling facilities
Does that sound remotely balanced to you?
City’s asset mgt report (pages 4, 12):
I was interviewed by
@RobSnow15
this morning about the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, and why I support reserving the
@NCC_CCN
parkways for active use.
Part of my answer: for some people, closed roads are the only place to get our for a stroll and a chat side-by-side?
I don't think
@_MarkSutcliffe
understands what he has started here.
If you are super-pissed with his Queen Elizabeth Driveway comments and want to have your voice heard ...

Most important: the difference in cost between the
@cmckenney
and

plans works out to $40 a year for the average taxpayer.
$40 … the difference between mediocrity and world-class. (1/3)
The real story here is why would the mayor unprompted propose something so controversial.
I think this is really about Lansdowne.
The OSEG billionaires want QED as a full access road, and I believe they’ve got the mayor doing their bidding for them.
Just a theory …
LISTEN: "I don't know that we're getting as much benefit as perhaps the NCC hoped from that."
Mayor

Here’s the letter I wrote to her in response.
Since Marty disappeared from X yesterday, if you feel the same way, please write directly to marty.carr

So during the Lansdowne 2.0 meeting Marty Carr has attacked two volunteers, including

She just doxxed, AKA read aloud, a residents email address live during the meeting.
How is this appropriate?
What the Queen Elizabeth Driveway debacle in Ottawa is really about:
CAR ACCESS INTO LANSDOWNE
Solve this and we can transform QED into something magnificent, like an urban national park. Something as impactful on Ottawa as the winter Skateway.

BAILING OUT BILLIONAIRES
@_MarkSutcliffe
is doing OSEG’s bidding to get a bigger access road for the failing Lansdowne partnership
— so the ultra-elite can profit off building luxury condos on public land.
Nothing more.
@_MarkSutcliffe
Mark, we are happy to sit down with you at any time and explain to you how the green bond for biking is cost-neutral to taxpayers.
And why this is exactly the sort of instrument that a fiscally-prudent manager would use.
It also points out that the green bond for biking can be done in a cost neutral to taxpayers — ie requiring no changes to the taxes we all pay.
We describe how that works here.

Thank you
@DevineSean
for putting into the words the way so many of us feel about the mismanagement of the Lansdowne file.
So much opportunity … so little vision in this proposal.
Over the last two days, we heard from more than 80 Ottawa residents and organizations about the future of Lansdowne Park, and had some very productive discussions about the plan. Je suis heureux de constater un tel engagement de la part de la communauté. We will work hard over…

Second, can we put up a few thousand more of these across the city please?
Gatineau installs secure bike parking at Hôtel-de-ville.
It’s FANTASTIC and it’s FREE (for the first 10 hours).
@ottawacity
is about to open the same system in the Market and the Glebe. Will it also be free?
5. 300 people show up in person to express what seems like unanimous disapproval of Lansdowne secrecy and half-truths.
One suggestion is to take the HALF BILLION DOLLARS and let Ottawa’s 24 wards decide how they would each spend $20m on local priorities instead.
4. Lansdowne price tag presented as $419.1m
BUT, then report adds parking for $18.6m
And consultant EY notes need to include $23m for business interruption costs
So REAL COST: $460.7m
Add in “Class C” margin of error, and this is easily 1/2 billion $
Get the facts: Wed 7pm

1- Trillium path restored so that the detour (around Young St and Preston) is no longer needed.
1- this data has little credibility if it shows a 41% drop in cycling from 2019 to 2023!
2- but even if it was right, it shows a cycling mode share of 14%. Huge win, considering citywide mode share is about 5%.
Thanks
@_MarkSutcliffe

When during the election Larry O’Brien said, to paraphrase, this city doesn’t need another Larry O’Brien, this is the amateur hour antics he was talking about.
At least be honest that this is really about helping your OSEG buddies get unrestrained QED access to Lansdowne.
The debate over closing a specific stretch of Queen Elizabeth Driveway is not about whether or not the city supports active transportation. It’s about where and when are the best opportunities for it.
Le débat sur la fermeture d'un tronçon précis de la…
Most honest comment and entire rationale for Lansdowne 2.0:
Greenberg - “It hasn't been a great success from our perspective."
True. OSEG lose ~$10m/yr.
So up to taxpayers to bail them out with $500m in corporate welfare, for poor business decisions?
HOLD THE PHONES: is the City of Ottawa secretly selling off Lansdowne Park lands — without telling anyone?
@ottawacity
councillors — please explain “beyond air rights”.
If you can’t answer that question, what else aren’t staff telling you???
And thank you to Councillor Lo for leadership on Lansdowne 2.0.
Lo writes “I will be voting against the proposal, mostly because risky investments like these should be meant for private money, not public money.”
" Sutcliffe says he … has not met with OSEG representatives.
"I know what their feelings are, and have not had many conversations with them directly.” “
Which is it, Mark? “Not met with OSEG” or “not had many conversations with them”?
Who’s the puppet master for QED nonsense?
The National Capital Commission is peddling forward with its active transportation program on Queen Elizabeth Driveway despite calls to reopen the road to vehicles, saying it is "proud to provide safe, accessible, and unique active use experiences."
Can anyone explain to me why the Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association is commissioning a poll asking residents whether QED closures affect them?
Shouldn’t they, I dunno, maybe poll tourists on what sort of attractions bring tourists to Ottawa?
13. I can’t get past the previous point 12.
Lansdowne 2.0 is half a billion dollars in corporate welfare for OSEG.
Paid for in part with $6m meant to be part of the City’s affordable housing fund.
So we’re using money to help the most vulnerable to bail out the richest?
12. When the city sells land or “air rights” to private developers, 25% of sale goes to an affordable housing fund
For Lansdowne 2.0 this was cut to 10% — meaning $6m is diverted from affordable housing
Do you oppose using affordable housing dollars for a new stadium?
With economic uncertainty and rising concern about a recession, many Ottawa residents are worried about being able to pay their bills. That’s why we can’t add to their burden with big tax increases. The new proposed budget fulfills my campaign promise to keep tax increases to…
Mr Mayor, is the QED debacle anything more than you trying to give your OSEG pals a privileged access route into Lansdowne?
Your rationale for reopening QED is falling apart … 1/6
"I'm hearing concerns from residents in the Glebe, that they feel trapped in their neighbourhoods [...] I'm hearing that they don't feel their kids are safe walking on the roads because there's so many cars [...]" -

councillors still on the fence … it’s not too late to get out ahead and put yourself on the right side of history.
Show us the courage to lead.
Not only does Lansdowne 2.0 do nothing for affordable housing (see👇), 1200 luxury units will do little for Ottawa’s wider housing crisis.
Pretty good, however, for Airbnb investors and Glebe millionaires.
With public land, we should be building publicly-owned housing.
The free market supply side housing argument for the Lansdowne 2.0 plan has a number of flaws which I’ll describe in this thread. Let’s build some new housing at Lansdowne but it must be affordable, at the moment the plan will do the exact opposite. Here’s why-

Fantastic thread on reimagining QED👇
The land alongside the Rideau Canal is probably the most valuable real estate in the city.
It deserves to be something amazing — something more just than a couple of access roads.
There has been some discussion over the last few days about the
@NCC_CCN
's decision to restrict vehicle access to Queen Elizabeth Drive along The Canal. As someone who cares deeply about
@ottawacity
and city building, I thought I would add my opinion.
#urbandesign
“It is hard to understand why Sutcliffe is taking a stand against his own Official Plan.”
Maybe because OSEG wants an unrestricted access road into Lansdowne, and the mayor is ready to do their bidding?

@ottawacity

Councillor
@DevineSean
also announcing his current position is to “not support” Lansdowne 2.0.
Cost, other spending priorities, transportation challenges, affordable housing, lack of roof on stadium …
Thank you for putting the interests of the taxpayer first.
And thank you to Councillor Lo for leadership on Lansdowne 2.0.
Lo writes “I will be voting against the proposal, mostly because risky investments like these should be meant for private money, not public money.”
Lansdowne 2.0 financing model is a little crazy!!!
One small example: to get “$5M/yr cost to taxpayers” the model books $500K/yr in revenue from a hotel accommodation tax levied on a HOTEL ON THE LANSDOWNE SITE!!!
Do you remember the Mayor vlogging about a hotel?
The Bank Street Bridge active transportation lanes are back! But only for a short while. A full reconstruction of the bridge will start in May with 3 lanes of traffic, enhanced safety measures and permanent bike/scooter lanes. This is about building a better city

Bike infra now = better health + fewer deaths + reduced emissions + less traffic congestion + more smiles. (4/8)
@ctvottawa
Important to add that this proposal is COST-NEUTRAL to taxpayers. Ottawa is spending $15m this year on bike infra, and will continue to spend at this rate for the 25-year Official Plan. They would issue a bond now, and pay it back with the money we would be spending anyways.

Talk about fear mongering …
There is no coordinated “progressive” slate — simply a lot of people coming forward with shared values that the status quo is not working.
I doubt many of these candidates have ever even heard of the document you mention, let alone support it.
In “net present value” terms, the 4- and 25-year options cost the same.
Financing is the mechanism that allows us to accelerate spending, and since we have existing funds that can be used to service debt, it is cost-neutral to taxpayers. (4/5)

Question: what are some standard practices for bike infrastructure in Ottawa that we should rethink?
e.g., we put bike lanes on the “traffic” side of parked cars, when we could put the bike lanes on the sidewalk side and use the parked cars as a buffer.
