Just heard a story from someone whose son is a waiter. Their son's coworker got a PCR result text mid-shift: positive. He'd felt ill and actually tested positive on rapid, but the job required PCR results. He still had to wait for manager approval, so worked thru the dinner rush.

I fully reject upbeat rewrites of the pandemic. We did not all come together. A huge number of people came together and did remarkable things, including limiting the spread. A lot of other people caused mass death with abandon bc this individualistic culture is death-making af.

Thinking about Tyre’s mother who asked people not to let children see the video. Something about that struck me — the level of care for the feelings of other people’s children, while coping with the extreme pain of losing her own child. All love and solidarity to that family.

Given the scale of human loss the U.S. has openly embraced via COVID, 9/11 commemorations seem to send the message that it’s tragic when other people kill a bunch of USians, but when our norms & policies take us out in far greater numbers, that’s just life under capitalism, baby.
