Hello to everyone newly interested in

b/c of the exciting and consequential

race.
You can find our YEARS of polling on MD here:
And my book on Larry Hogan here: (or wherever books are sold).
Joe Manchin isn’t the kind of Democrat progressives want. He is the kind that can win a US Senate seat in West Virginia. And without his seat, Dems wouldn’t have the majority & any of the powers that go with it.
A thing my mom did to get me into college was write a check for $35 to pay for the application fee at the local state university.
To put in
#AuntBecky
in perspective:
Even having the money for an app fee is an economic privilege not available to many students.
You know who probably has lots of actual economic anxiety?
The children who are trying to make a buck washing windshields.
Stop making these kids into villains. They are just trying to make it in a tough world.
The crazy thing is that there are millions of Americans who are having a regular Monday night. Not really that concerned or even interested about tomorrow. Maybe they will vote. Maybe they will not. No big deal. Other things are going on.
Bananas. All of them.

FWIW, I don’t think she is some shining example of our representative democracy. I think she represents the mixed up, often contradictory average voter that campaigns have to win over.
She pays some attention. Has some things she cares about. Is movable.
Voters are frustrating.
We go into the field today at the Goucher College Poll—results next week!
Can you believe that a state school graduate can run a respected, highly-cited poll of Marylanders all by herself?

Morning thoughts on
@BrownforMD
.
His loss in 2014 wld have driven many out of politics.
Instead he won a House seat, spent the last 5+ yrs advocating for service mbrs/vets, & now will very likely be MD’s next AG.
A great lesson in not letting one tough setback define you.
All Bird scooters must be removed from Baltimore by the end of the day Tuesday. The company did not receive one of the four permits to operate in the city.
I probably need to log-off Twitter for a couple days to finish my book revisions. But I have some end-of-year personal news to share first:
Starting in January, I'll be writing a monthly (sometimes more) column for the Washington Post's Local Opinions section on
#mdpolitics
.
1/ I have a Friday
#mdpolitics
news drop.
I wrote a book about
@LarryHogan
and the 2018 election in Maryland. It's (tentatively) titled "Blue State Republican" & will be published by Temple University Press.
It will be out in the fall of 2022.
A place in Baltimore where I could pay to sit in a hot tub, stream room, & sauna for an hour or so. A place where it’s just the spa amenities, but without having to get a massage/facial each time. Maybe a relaxation room with some herbal tea.
Someone pls open this business.
Peroutka has decided not to concede to Brown.
Ultimately, Peroutka isn’t important or high profile enough for his nonsense to cause any real damage. So, he deserves criticism but no additional attention after that.
Congrats to Anthony Brown for the landslide victory.

Young man, I’m ordering dinner for 5pm. Isn’t it clear that I’m too old for this nonsense?
I personally can’t wait to hit the refresh button over and over and over again tonight even though I know the mail-in ballots won’t be counted for two days.
Come on.
Wes Moore is a mainstream Democrat who holds a mix of moderate and progressive policy positions.
He is hardly “far left.” (Just ask anyone who is far left. They’ll tell you.)
My quick take:
1. Yes, absolutely, Hogan has a *significant* uphill battle to win a US Senate seat in Maryland.
2. I’d still avoid an outright, immediate dismissal of a two-term governor who maintained a consistent mid-60’s/low-70’s approval rating for 8 years.

Good morning. Among the far more serious repercussions (re: more death), I'm going to be incredibly miffed if we have to through another round of restrictions because people didn't take the FREE VACCINE THAT OBVIOUSLY WORKS.
A month after they escaped from a farm in Maryland, five zebras have evaded capture and are continuing to ramble across the wilds of suburban Prince George’s County.

Taking the weekend off.
I will get started on all the numerous balls I’ve dropped over the last 18 months on Monday.
A big thank you to

reminder that if you complain about “kids from other neighborhoods” coming to your neighborhood to trick-or-treat, you are the actual worst.
Kids from anywhere coming to your house to say “trick-or-treat” is a blessing.
Hi James. We do, indeed, survey red counties. We provide geographic information, as well as other key demographics, on our sample with every release.

Thanks for your interest in the Goucher College Poll!
Jamie Raskin is what happens when we elect the best among us.
This has nothing to do with his party affiliation and everything to do with his personal strength, character, and patriotism.
Some self promotion this Sunday:
Hello, national media.
Do you need comment on Larry Hogan not running for president?
I wrote an entire book and *a lot* of op-eds about him—and 8 years of polls.
On this specific topic, I am unquestionably an expert source. DMs open.
I’m once again begging you to stop doing this. It’s not enough to note it’s unscientific.
You should not write this story from the “data” you collected from your viewer survey.
Here’s why (again):

Hello
#mdpolitics
. Today is my 40th birthday and I’m proud to announce that I still lack the self-control to stay off Twitter.
So, cheers to no personal but plenty of grey hair growth.
And, yes, I deeply appreciate the well wishes even though I do not appreciate being 40.
Okay friends. I need your help.
If you see me do anything on Twitter from now until August 7, I need you to IN ALL CAPS to tell me to do work.
Pls hold me to this. I need to be productive. I'm almost 40 and have zero self control.
Beloved Goucher students: Don't be like me!
If you are a Republican voter who is angry at Pres. Trump & the GOP members of Congress who incited the insurrection at the Capitol, get involved in local GOP politics. Share your ideas. Support candidates who reflect what you want the GOP to be & help them win primaries.

“I was wrong. I was wrong.” says Rep Liz Cheney about condemning same-sex marriage in 2013, a position that caused a split with her sister Mary, who is married to a woman. Rep Cheney says the sisters are now reconciled. “I love my sister very much.”
The best thing that happened to me this decade was moving from North Carolina to Maryland—Baltimore, specifically. It made everything in life better. And it would be just fine by me to spend another decade here.

TFW you've run a successful poll of Maryland voters for nearly a decade but thoughts on question design from men who haven't need to be given equal consideration.
Kick rocks! 🥰

Thank you,

An 8/10 is great(!) but I need to earn an A. I promise to study hard, make the necessary improvements and really nail the next exam.
Going out on a limb—if I surveyed Baltimoreans AND those from surrounding counties and ask “What do you think is the biggest issue facing Baltimore City today?”....it won’t be squeegee kids.
I just deleted a Tweet.
Not b/c I’ve changed my mind on a millennial/gen-x being the next Baltimore mayor—but because I used the wrong “here/hear” and I’m SO ASHAMED. 😔

The average person pays little to no attention to their state legislature and has no idea who represents them in the state house.
Talk to your friends about state politics before someone else does.
Just in: In an election case out of North Carolina, SCOTUS agrees to review the "independent state legislature" theory next term. Under that theory, state legislatures have broad power to set rules for federal elections, even if state courts say those rules are unconstitutional.
It’s clearly Oscar.

Oscar would do what needs to be done.
