This is must-read for those who engage in historical & linguistic distortions where “Zionism”=“Judaism,” and who, in doing so, make it harder to fight against real antisemitism, especially when they collaborate with powerful antisemitic white supremacists

@betsysneller @ktchernes “Good grammar costs $$$” reminds me of Haitian proverb “Kreyòl se lang rasin. Franse se lang achte”=“Kreyòl is the language we’re rooted in; French, the language we buy”. In Haiti, Kreyòl is often viewed as “bad French” yet everyone speaks Kreyòl, only some 3% speak fluent French

One of best & most honest reports on Haiti in @NYTImes & anywhere else in long while. It's not everyday that "blan" reporters reflect on their own positionalities & biases in their views about Haiti, then try to rectify it—for greater good. Mèsi @LPolgreen

The sort of violence we see in Palestine has happened everywhere people refuse to be dominated. This New Year Day we celebrate the 220th anniversary of Haiti’s independence and are inspired by a revolution that reminds us liberation is possible.

#KotLangManmanNou ? Rapò @FotWobo sa a detaye konsekans pinisyon anti kreyòl sou mantal ti moun yo. Se tankou yon jenosid lengwistik & kiltirèl ki kondane ti moun yo nan echèk depi an lagan nan lekòl tèt an ba. Fòk otorite yo rive kraze chenn mantal sa yo.

“There’s no such thing as a NATURAL DISASTER. What you have is a natural HAZARD that overlaps with a VULNERABLE system.” @DrWendyRocks . Haiti's only "malediction" is (neo-)colonial greed, from both within & without, that's made us overwhelmingly vulnerable. @ambafranceht , ou la ?

@DrSepinwall @gabriel_mathy Given its history, Haitian Creole does show some influence from West-African languages but its grammar is not West-African—not French either. If we apply the Comparative Method without biases, then it should indeed be classified as a Romance language.

In 2015, some of us were asking: Linguistics & Human Rights: What are the connections? Now in 2024, in the context of misinformation around an ongoing genocide, isn’t it time for us linguists to ask: Language & Linguistics & Decolonization & Liberation: What are the connections?

Today is a good day to remind @UNESCOstat @UNESCO @ILDecade that Creole languages duly belong to the realm of "languages." UNESCO needs to publicly rectify their claim to the contrary. This misclassification of Creole lgs undermines respect for human rights & linguistic diversity
