So two weeks after a developer bought Crooked House pub (which would be worth far more as building land) it catches fire. Two days later it is bulldozed before any chance to see if building can be saved. Was the JCB booked before the fire?
10 years ago Sir Jimmy
#Savile
had just died & BBC News was preparing state funeral type coverage of his memorial service. Meanwhile in the Newsnight office myself, the brilliant, brave (& very funny) Liz MacKean &
@hamlivingston
were preparing to expose..
Here's a real mystery. We buy £50K a year of drink for FCO & No10 to entertain guests "with wines of appropriate quality at reasonable cost” & you'd expect that to be massively reduced during Covid so why won't they publish figures for when Boris was PM?
If BBC goes ahead with plan to chop £5M from £8M
@BBCNewsnight
budget - strip it of reporters & turn it into chat show they should at least have decency to ditch the name because it'll have nothing in common with show so many of us were proud to work on
Supposed to be taking some time off but couldn't resist
#CrookedHouse
Who-Dunnit. So I'm on Vanessa's show on
@TalkTV
at 6.15. I asked what turned out to be right question "Did they book the excavator before the fire?" in a tweet which went viral 12K likes & RTs. Today

This just gets worse. The gowns were not packaged in a way that would keep them sterile so were useless. Mone's family made £70M from these deals. Whole idea of a VIP lane for friends of government to get contracts is corrupt. Where are the police?
Sad news. Karin Ward who opened the Pandora's box of Jimmy
#Savile
's offending - the first woman to go on camera - has died. She was brave & badly treated by the BBC. She made it easier for other victims of sexual assault to be believed & wrote excellent Victim Zero. RIP Karin
One of the unsung behind-the-scenes heroes of the Paxman days of

has died. Dave Murden was our driver but so much more than that. He was a source of intelligence on what the guests were saying as they were driven into the show. Famously when Nick Clegg was...
Deputy PM he was sat in the back of the Dave's blue Merc on the way into TV Centre & asked his aide what were the 3 worst questions Paxman could ask him. They ended up being questions 1, 2 & 3. RIP Dave Murden
Within hours of

First thing to say is that there are plenty of 29-year-olds out there who have achieved much & would refresh the House of Lords. But the only experience Owen brings is working as a junior crony for the second worst PM in history & there's no shortage of Boris cronies in the Lords
@IrkthePurists
He's recruited 4 followers in the 7 years he's been on Twitter - hopefully
@GreggsOfficial
will bear this in mind - and actually it's a nice friendly greeting
supposedly cuddly corporations like BBC will do anything to defend the bosses. 10 years on we've done nothing to deal with cover-up culture. There is still no law to make BBC managers or hospital chiefs or school heads report sexual abuse. Mandatory reporting now please. RIP Liz
Off duty cop Charlie Guenigault & hack Geoff Ho took on London Bridge attackers unarmed, firefighters stormed into Grenfell knowing fate of New York comrades on 9/11, police and ambulance straight into Manchester Arena aftermath but the 1922 committee are so more deserving
There's something frustrating about how likes of Osborne can get Met to investigate an email when most of us can't get them to take car or bike thefts or break-ins seriously. There's also one allegation in there that you'd hope they at least ask him a couple of questions about
For me this is key 2 minutes in Netflix - Jimmy

: A British Horror Story - when BBC bosses pulled our investigation in favour of running tributes to "Great Man". BBC high-ups had known since 1973 he was bringing underage girls back to his flat to stay overnight
The BBC declined to take part in Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story but it haunts the series with footage of the shows that enabled his industrial scale paedophilia. The BBC protected Savile to the end but treated Merrion Jones and Liz MacKean as traitors for exposing the truth
Crooked owners - sorry Crooked House owners - who illegally demolished the historic Midlands pub after "someone" set fire to it ordered to rebuild Crooked House as was - that's going to be an engineering challenge
Found out for myself yesterday driving from London to Mumbles chaos caused by Welsh 20 mph speed limits. I crossed border but to my surprise was allowed to continue at 70. For the next 70 miles including through Swansea until I got into Mumbles no speed limits had changed.
She got a VIP contract for £122M of PPE because her mates were in power - none of which was usable. She & her husband made £60M profit on that which they have lied about ever since & Michele Mone says "I can't see what we've done wrong" That's the problem with these people
Tory peer Michelle Mone has finally admitted that she stands to benefit from tens of millions of pounds of profit from PPE sold to UK during pandemic. A huge vindication of my colleague

@metpoliceuk
Would be great if Met started enforcing existing laws including violence v women (especially violence v women by their own officers) before inventing new offence of "undermining this celebration" of feudal primogeniture. Only 12% of young people think monarchy very important
In retrospect Liz did the right thing. The BBC thought it was me & a senior press officer sent emails saying he would "drip poison about Meirion's suspected role". How you even keep your job after putting stuff like that in emails is a question only BBC management can answer...
Finally finishing clearing my Mum's house after a year. This is saddest find so far - dried fruit for the Christmas Puddings she'll never make again - best anyone's ever tasted - much in demand. She had a long, happy & useful life much loved by friends & family. RIP Eileen
On this day in 1966 Asquith Xavier finally broke the colour bar which had stopped anyone who wasn't white working at Euston station - a small but significant hero whose action will be marked with a plaque at the station in Chatham where he lived

2017 law changed to stop pubs being demolished without planning permission. Also if they set fire to it it is arson - just because you own it doesn't mean you can't be guilty of arson - if you are reckless and endangered human life - firefighters lives put on the line
This is exactly what happened with reporter at Newsnight who was making women very uncomfortable - suggestion was he should only work with men - senior people on the programme had to insist he was the problem not the women & he was moved out
This is what stood out the most to me in the
#RussellBrand
investigation: that rather than hold a predator to account for his behaviour, a media platform would instead deny women access to jobs they are qualified for 😤 The complicity & cowardice.

Red card? Jenrick owns 3 houses each worth £2M+ but we've paid £100K in rent for his 4th house in Newark. As Housing Secretary involved in numerous cash-for-planning-permission scandals & diverted levelling-up money into his own constituency & there was his Lockdown hypocrisy

No - 2017 Town & Country Planning regs said you can't demolish a pub without planning permission. If arson investigation not finished perverting the course of justice becomes another possible offence. Also video of demolition shows multiple health & safety breaches

🚨personal news🚨I’ll be leaving the BBC at the end of May. Newsnight in its current format will end then, so most posts will go. I decided not to apply for other BBC jobs. Working there for 35 yrs has been life defining: an eyewitness to history collaborating with such brilliant

Meirion Jones, whose investigation into Jimmy Savile for Newsnight was suppressed by the BBC, tells

he’s been contacted by “numerous women” who say there’s a “much wider problem” within the industry.

Worst speech by PM to CBI since 1996 when I filmed bosses snoring through John Major's effort for Newsnight. Written up by Telegraph writer - who'd seen advance copy but was in bar for speech - as triumph. That writer - Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson
Whenever lawyers threaten us with libel I am reminded of 1st successful high profile libel trial - in 1684 - when the most famous pirate in history Captain Morgan (from what is now Cardiff) sued an author for calling him errr... a pirate and won £200 (£40K+ today)

I hope every journalist, every sub, every Editor involved in this charade of a front page is ashamed. What happened yesterday was 800K demonstrators calling for end to bloodshed in Gaza marched peacefully while hundreds of drunk ultra-right yobs stirred up by Suella & the likes
Now we've seen full footage plain Gideon Falter was lying when he said he was just trying to cross the road. He was marching into the demo to try to provoke a reaction. Something he has repeatedly tried to do. This is all a distraction from need for
#CeaseFireInGazaNOW
to stop
A former police officer matter-of-factly observing that there are some people who want the pro Palestinian marches banned, the marches can only be banned if there's a likelihood of serious disorder, and therefore the people who want them banned are trying to create disorder.
I don't know why I bother but this is not Prigozhin's plane being shot down - it's footage from two months ago of Wagner Group shooting down AN26. If you'd ever been to Russia you'd know that mobile phones are everywhere & 3/4 of population on social media. Footage of Embraer

Up till 50 years ago God Save the Queen was played before every Wales rugby game. By 1974 it was inaudible because of the booing. In retaliation Twickenham refused to play Hen Flad fy Nhadau at all which brought things to a head & GSTQ only played as an English anthem henceforth
People say to me "After what happened to you how can you support BBC?" Easy - first it wasn't the BBC it was the management, second - 90% in Beeb do really good job, third - show me a country that does this better. I will always be a critical supporter of the Beeb & licence fee
