This city is better than articles titled ‘Why is Birmingham so ugly”. I’m going to put my favourite pictures of Birmingham on a thread below; feel free to add your own to it.

My girlfriend wants to get a pizza oven for the garden but I think it’s an unnecessary spend. We’ve compromised and are now getting a pizza oven for the garden.
The volunteers have made these games. Not some bull. Not an ex athlete shopping in Selfridges. The volunteers. Everyone is full of joy and pride. They epitomise everything which is great about Birmingham,
I’ve muted Birmingham Live. They aren’t doing anything positive for this city right now. It’s click bait of the highest order; misleading headlines that are using panic and fear for interaction. I find it really sad that it is Brum’s primary news source.
Yes we have a Banksy. Yes it’s lovely and Christmassy and has reindeers. But please consider why Banksy chose Brum; because our levels of homelessness are out of control. Instead of rushing to Vyse st for a picture for the ‘gram, spend that time reading about how you can help
The opening ceremony is just brilliant. An open love letter to Birmingham, it’s everything it needs to be and more. Unmissable tv later on this week.
@birminghamcg22
have completely excelled themselves.
Today I take my Dad for shopping. Buy him some lunch. Beat him at pool. Drink all the beer in Birmingham with him. Today is my favourite day of the year.
@KarenB139
Happy Birthday Freddie. I’d be honoured if you wanted to write a guest post for me, or even just join me for dinner at any restaurant you’d like to eat at. It’s on me.
NEW POST. Wondered where the best pizza in Brum is? Or negroni, breakfast, balti, burger and more? Here is the Best of Birmingham; the definitive list.
The negativity towards this weekend is really winding me up. If you don’t like it, stay at home; it’s that simple. It’s legal to open and places are doing it to stay afloat. Nobody is breaking the law by going out, seeing friends and putting money back in to the industry.
Got this from Aldi off the back of
@FoodieBoys
suggestion. Last night I found it a bit one-note, but now it’s opened up it’s great; heavy and complex, full of fruit. An absolute steal at £5.50. Going to start a thread here of supermarket wines I like for those interested.
Mom and Dad married 35 years today.
Tonight we go to the curry house they ate in every week and just Dad will be there.
Life is short. Make every second count with the ones you love.
I’ve spoke to two people today about lock down and both were crying. If you live by yourself in Brum and want company, I’ll do my best to be your outdoor exercise partner for a walk. Nobody should go through this alone. Just DM me.
This is amazing for Yikouchi who absolutely deserve all the praise heading their way. A bizarre lunch, made all the more surprising that someone I’ve spent years ripping off badly reads my stuff. Cheers
@jayrayner1
The footage of the knife attack perpetrator is out and so begins the same old racist shit.
I have nothing to add other than if you bring his race into it, or BLM, or any other tired stereotype, please unfollow me before I call you out for being the prick you are.
When I asked
@PloughHarborne
to get involved with
@Taborhouse365
they passed me a menu and said “pick whatever you want for us to cook them”. Tonight we filled the back of a taxi with box after box of various pizza to be delivered to the shelter. Amazing work tonight.
*immediate changes to the blog*. As of today I'll accept no more invitations to group blogger or PR events. I no longer want to write about the same restaurants as everyone else, so will focus on the kind of restaurants to not hand out free meals. If its shit, I'll say its shit.
I buy a half bottle of wine on the train and offer a glass to the guy sat opposite me. We drink the wine, he goes to the shop and buys another half bottle for us to drink. This is how every train journey should ever be.
Confirmed bookings for the next two months or so looking pretty sweet.

Putting my (redundancy) money where my mouth is.
Without question, if one Birmingham restaurant is going to win 2* in January, it’s Adams. Precise, intricate, with absolute clarity of flavour. A class lunch of the highest order.
And I sincerely hope that the businesses who do open realise they don’t need ‘collabs’ who’ll go once for free and never return. They need regular customers who are willing to accept the risk and spend money with them. Instagram likes won’t pay bills.
Opheem last night was sensational. Birmingham feels a very special place to be right now; so much young talent pushing and inspiring each other to reach new levels. I woke up thinking about this halibut dish.
All good and well but it has to start with Birmingham Live. Ten months ago it ran the headline “why is Birmingham so ugly”. Ironic or not, we need upwards hitting from them, not scraping the barrel for clicks. They perpetuate much of the subconscious negativity.
Indian Chip Shop at
@herberts_yard
. Blending Black Country style battered chips with the most incredible chicken tikka, fish pakora and lamb keema. Hand on heart, it’s up there with Buddha Belly and Flying Cows as the best street food I’ve ever eaten.
Let’s not mess around; The Backyard Cafe is the best breakfast going. Sausage patty, muffin, hash brown, fried egg, crispy onions, Welsh rarebit. A McMuffin on steroids. Unreal.
I’ve had three pizzas from Poli in the last month. It’s the best in Brum and, I think, probably the best in the UK right now. Better than ‘O Ver, which is ranked the highest ranked on the Euro list in England. The bread is mind blowing. It’s quite special.
The worst kept secret in Stirchley is now out.
@SaiBuddhaBelly
is opening opposite The Bournebrook. Expect them to have pretty cool neighbours who do banging drinks, a competition winner to open the most ambitious restaurant in the area to date, and another street food to join.
Businesses telll me about your amended service hours, your new days that you’ll open, and your plans for takeaways/home deliveries. I’ll retweet them all. Let’s make this account a place of positive news as opposed to the anxiety ridden doom and gloom.
This piece on Grealish in GQ is sensational
“Waltzing through an airport blasting Fleetwood Mac, not a second of sleep on his face, about to absolutely ruin whatever science podcast Kevin de Bruyne was planning on listening to”
Aktar at Home continues to be one of life’s bargain joys. Todays lunch was beef vindaloo, some tempered chickpeas and chicken makhani. Massively underestimated the portion size and overestimated my appetite. Will be eating curry all week.
The wonderful
@HarborneKitchen
coming up with the goods tonight with 30 portions of curry and rice for
@letsfeedbrum
. Great people doing great stuff for great causes. I love this city.
Ten weeks ago we sat at this very table and you paid for the drinks over a few hours of laughs and gossip.
“You get them next time”, you said.
Rest easy, mate. I’ll always feel incredibly lucky being able to call you a friend. I wish that hug had been much longer.
Had a lovely message from a restaurant manager telling me how someone had traveled to the restaurant purely off the back of the blog. She signed it off with “I’m amazed that anyone pays attention to your shit”. She’s right
The streetfood, the starred restaurants, Harborne Kitchen, Cheal's, Foliums, Opheem; all these great places pushing for accolades. Our independent scene that gets better by the day.
The only people who say Brum is shit are those who have never been here. Our city is incredible.
I’m surprised more people haven’t taken a picture of this view. It’s really quite something. Everyone should be taking a picture of it and tweeting it. We need more people saying how they feel about the city.
I find the level of dignity just astonishing. When my mom passed I wasn’t capable of doing anything other than staring blankly at a wall for five days. He has the worlds eyes on him whilst he his grieving.
Some of you may have noticed I omitted Yorkshire puddings from the World Cup, because Yorkshire puddings on a Christmas dinner are an abomination. Thank you for attending my TED talk.
I’ve now caught up with last weeks GBM. Anyone who has been to Upstairs will know that
@tom_chef1
was never in question with the cooking, but what stood out was his humility, manners, and support for his fellow competitors. He is a credit to the central region.
I mean I’m happy for people from elsewhere to adapt this city as their own from lesser places, but to have grown up with people taking the piss out the accent, saying how shit your home is and then succeed. Fair fucks. We Brummies are cut from a different cloth.
