For me to give up my Zionist identity is for me to capitulate to a supposed "progressive" left that foists upon me a litmus test, and to a messianic right, that sees in this identity a denial of Palestinian rights, equity, and justice.

are both factually incorrect & morally reprehensible. They minimize the Shoah & excuse terrorism of the most heinous kind.
I heard directly from survivors of Oct 7 from the kibbutzim who were utterly crushed, traumatized, felt so betrayed, because they had been told that the Gazans they had come to trust had participated in the ultimate betrayal.
Now we learn it wasn't true.
No, it upsets me, as an Israeli Zionist.
Because even if they are all Hamas fighters, which they are not, we should not torture, humiliate, or abuse anyone.
My family and I didn't sacrifice for the land of Israel that I love so that it could enact its revenge fantasies.
When lefty Jews say they're "moving to the centre/right" because of Antisemitism on the left, I don't actually think they're shifting their entire value system.
What I hear is Jews frantically searching for a space that offers them compassion & empathy, & that honours their pain.
The swift backlash against Schumer, an ardent Zionist, and supporter of Israel, shows exactly what I, and so many said following the Glazer speech:
No matter who you are, there is simply no criticism of Israel you can express that is considered acceptable to the Hasbaraists.
How many speeches has Senator Schumer given about replacing the tyrants that rule Iran? How about the need for elections in Russia? Or in Saudi Arabia?
…so, just Israel then?
When we say "the occupation corrupts" this is what we mean.
When you begin to dehumanize "the other" ultimately, everyone becomes "the other" - even your neighbours or teachers.
In dehumanizing others, we lose our own humanity.
Israeli teacher posted on social media, expressing sympathy with Gazans. School fired him and made a police complaint. He was jailed for a few days & media depicted him as Hamas supporter. After charges were dropped, court ordered to take him back to work. This was his welcome:
A large part of why Palestinian stories are kept from Jews - in Israel and the diaspora, is that everything will change if we are allowed to see that they love like us, and laugh like us, and want peace like us.
End the war, share stories instead.
thinking about bourdain’s episode in palestine today. CNN almost didn’t air it but he fought like hell to keep the episode and share their stories since mainstream media so rarely gave the opportunity to empathize with the every day of palestinians.
Hasbara has always been cringe, but the sharp pivot it's taken into full QAnon-style conspiracy over the past couple days should very much concern and worry us.
I don’t know if this is what the Hollywood stars wanted to echo with their bloody hand pins, but this is the association it has for Israelis, and if you’re not familiar with perhaps the most iconic image of the Second Intifada, maybe don’t broadcast your ignorance.
The chutzpah of Jews living in Israel getting on this app and going "Palestinians should just get over wanting to live in their homeland" is something else.
Can we, as Zionists who yearned to return home for thousands of years, AT THE VERY LEAST have some empathy?

It is true that "intifada" means simply "shaking off" in Arabic, it's also true that it evokes memories of suicide bombings for Israelis.
Just like "Zionism" means Jewish self-determination but evokes memories of the Nakba for Palestinians.
How do we hold these multiple truths?
What the heck do people think the word “intifada” means? Are they insane? This crazy and purposeful misleading has to stop. Weaponizing yet another term that has nothing to do with genocide. Can they damn ask us, Arabic speaking people, to explain it to them?
I understand why it's happening, but there is something unsettling about the "gotcha" rhetoric toward the pro-Israel side instead of solidarity and demand of accountability for these Palestinian women.
Believe Israeli women. Believe Palestinian women. Don't use them as props.
This is the exact issue with the vast majority of even those who do believe in a two-state solution - the idea that Palestinians somehow need to "prove themselves" to be granted a state.
Palestinians deserve statehood - full-stop.

Wild how some Western pro-Palestine folks will tell Jews that talking about rising Antisemitism is "a distraction" from the horrors in Gaza while spending days obsessing over a teenager's sticker.
Noah Schnapp’s ‘Stranger Things’ co-star Brett Gelman says Noah didn’t need to apologize for his comments on Israel and Palestine:
“I saw nothing wrong. He held up a sticker saying ‘Zionism is sexy’… zionism is the believe that Israel should exist, and that’s sexy to me too.”

If you’re an American Jewish young person signed up for a Birthright trip this winter, do not go. You’ll spend ten days being spoon fed propaganda while — just a few miles away — millions of Palestinians are starving and worried about if they will survive Israel’s next bombing.
It is, at this point, inexcusable that the organizers of pro-Palestine rallies have not put together & executed a strategy to denounce antisemitism & remove it from the movement.
Protest, even deeply uncomfortable protest, is legitimate & necessary. This, however, is a disaster.
Biden's calculation was that support for Israel, even at great expense to opinion of him at home, would make Netanyahu more likely to acquiesce to US demands.
What he forgot to take into account was that Netanyahu is a fucking narcissistic psychopath.
Netanyahu said today he is actively working to ethnic transfer of Palestinians out of Gaza in a Likud meeting today. The problem, he said, is which countries will take them.
The Diaspora Jewish Left, already a small group, is splintering. Half moving to the right, as antisemitism by their supposed allies catches them by surprise, and half to the left, as they grow increasingly frustrated with Israel's actions. (1/2)
We can't claim it's just "a few bad apples" when it's "our" side.
Calling out extremism wherever we find it, taking it seriously no matter who it comes from and pushing back against it with all our might is the only way forward.
Enough of these excuses.
Smotrich & Ben Gvir represent the fringe of Israeli society. They are both extremists.
Anyone trying to present their comments as the view of most Israelis or even as the policy of the wartime cabinet either has a hidden agenda or does not get Israeli society/politics.
Abandoned by the Israeli government, the international left, and diaspora hasbaraists, anti-occupation Israelis continue to fight for a just and equitable political solution to the conflict.
Anyone who wants a different paradigm in the region would do well to support them.

It makes sense why pro-Israel hasbara in the Diaspora is focusing on campus protests -
allowing the protests to dominate the narrative, hides the fact that Israelis are:
-Calling for an end to the war
-Blaming Netanyahu for inability to reach hostage deal
-Against invading Rafah
The Hasbaraists invested money and resources into a "believe women" campaign, outraged (rightfully) at the humiliation and abuse of Israeli women at the hands of Hamas, but have no words of condemnation for the constant humiliation of Palestinian women by the IDF.
When Israeli lawmakers say they want to resettle Gaza, believe them.
When Hamas say they will repeat Oct 7 again and again, believe them.
This is not ending, not for real, not forever, until these people are no longer in control.
If you want Palestinians to instead see diplomacy, negotiations, and politics as advancing their national aspirations, you have to engage in diplomacy, negotiations, and politics.
Palestinians must not be allowed to look back at the October 7 Massacre and think, "Gee, burning this whole family alive really advanced our national cause."
Because then they will do it again.
And that is what you are encouraging them to do.

BREAKING: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected ceasefire proposals because he says Hamas's call for a withdrawal of all troops from Gaza and an end to the war is unacceptable

Calling for a ceasefire is not Antisemitic and calling for return of the hostages is not anti-Palestinian, all of these calls are simply desperate pleas for us to hold onto our humanity and we somehow keep failing.
Every single person, especially those directly affected by the conflict, who chooses to hold empathy for "the other", to cling to their humanity in an inhumane and unjust world, is someone who will lead us to peace.
The strongest narrative that keeps Hasbara successful is that all non-Jews hate us, we are all alone, and we must protect ourselves at all costs.
If you feel Hasbara is problematic, do your best not to prove all its talking points.

Why even bring this up? Because I care about all women, everywhere. Because it is not only Palestinian women who will be humiliated by IDF soldiers, but young Israeli women serving with them. Because misogyny is systemic, and we can only root it out if we fight it everywhere.
@MaytalKowalski
Israelis are having a hard enough time trying to get the world to believe or care that Hamas did the worst evil & degradation possible to Israeli women - I’m not sure anyone of them is paying attention to IDF soldiers posing with women’s underwear. Why even bring this up?
It's super weird how some Jews will complain about Antisemitism by saying "if this was said to any other minority group..." And then turn around and say it to another minority group.
Given the recent behavior of the pro-Palestinian group, Canada should reconsider its immigration plan for Gazans. Their values seem incompatible with ours, and I have no desire to welcome more hatred into our country.
When Macklemore faced backlash for this, he claimed he didn't realize it was a Jewish stereotype.
So now, when he confidently makes claims of what is and isn't Antisemitism, it shouldn't be surprising that said claims cannot be taken seriously.
But why do Jews have to leave the left? Why do we have to react to the discourse rather than create our own? We can be and build a strong left and these goofs can resituate themselves where they belong, the fascist right.
Glazer's speech challenges us:
For Jews, to face the occupation & its corruption of our ancestral land in which half of our mishpocha live.
For non-Jews, to challenge their dehumanization & minimization of the trauma of Israeli Jews on/post 10/7.

This is HOPE. On a cold, rainy morning, over 1000 Jews and Palestinians came together for Standing Together’s National Convention. We’ll vote for our national leadership and discuss the path forward - toward freedom, justice, safety and equality for all in Israel/Palestine.
What Zionism should do:
- acknowledge what Zionism means to Palestinians
- learn about and reconcile where Zionism has caused damage
- be in service, today, of social justice and equity
- not concede Zionism to extremist factions of religious Zionism
What Zionist means: Believes Jews have the right to self-determination and a state in their ancestral homeland.
What Zionist does not mean:
• anti-Palestinian
• anti-Palestinian state alongside Israel
• pro-war in Gaza
• Jewish
Glad we could clear that up.
Absolutely wild how many fellow Zionists are arguing with me on this. Y'all, Zionism is literally us not "getting over" our connection to our homeland. I'm sorry that realizing this makes you confused about how to accept the same for Palestinians. But you must.
Remember, all our struggles are interconnected, until a xenophobic, racist, anti-vaxxer puts a Palestinian flag on a guitar, then we can look the other way.
We pay attention when it's foreign aid workers, because we know we can't just accuse them of being Hamas.
But we should then recognize what that says about the utter dehumanization of Gazan civilians, and how eagerly so many are willing to participate in such dehumanization.
These were targeted hits on clearly marked humanitarian vehicles whose movement had been cleared with the IDF.
Clearly forbidden under international law. A total violation of IDF's legal obligation to distinguish non-mil objects and protect aid workers.
How can you guarantee that what Hamas did in Kfar Aza, Palestinian terrorists won't do in Kfar Saba?
How can you guarantee decades of rocket fire from Gaza won't recur from the West Bank?
Until you answer that, most Israelis will think talk of a "two-state solution" is insane.
This is such a morbidly fascinating lesson in comms -- realizing that "bring them home" is increasingly used as a call to the Israeli government to make a deal, they've taken any responsibility off of themselves with a rebrand to "let them go."
On twitter, I revealed to my followers the living room of Itamar Ben-Gvir, currently Israel's minister of national security, in which hung a picture of Baruch Goldstein, a Jewish terrorist who murdered 29 Palestinians in Hebron.
On the stage of the Munich Security Conference, I revealed to the viewers around the world, the antisemitic book written by Dr. Mahmoud al-Zahar, one of the founders of Hamas, which praised the Holocaust, a copy of which was found in a house in the Gaza Strip by IDF soldiers.

Conflating Jews in the Diaspora with Israel's prime minister and rejecting outright a premise that challenges you -- thank you for proving the point of this tweet.
At some point Hasbara made a strategic decision to stop trying to convert "normie", agnostic on Israel folks to supporters, and instead just began making already-bought-in folks even more bought in, and this is the result.
This goes to my long-standing claim that BDS isn't dangerous or a threat.
It's a wholly ineffective, unaware, maximalist movement that somehow manages to achieve the opposite of its goals at every turn.
This is kind of a wild thing to boycott; this is the primary movement within Israel pushing for a ceasefire right now. The moderate language is not about whitewashing Israel to outsiders, but rather about appealing to Israelis and growing the movement
I do truly believe that this is all done very deliberately. Post actual accounts of Antisemitism half the time, and then the most ridiculous shit you can think of half the time. The purpose, therefore, is not to call out Antisemitism, but to purposefully confuse and conflate.

These are human beings not political pawns. A state built for refuge owes its people at the very least that.
My dislike of Bibi is actually rooted in his extreme and constant betrayal of the Israeli people, from inciting the assassination of Rabin, to refusing to take any responsibility for the worst civil and military disasters in the history of the state.
America is trying so hard to install a puppet government in Israel. No matter how much one dislikes Bibi, it’s rooted in a love of democracy and/or political disagreement.
This not so subtle coup by the U.S won’t succeed, Israelis are not stupid. We didn’t rise from the ashes
If he had said "free the hostages" first, someone would claim that because he called for a ceasefire next, it's equating Israel with Hamas.
There's no way to win with the "everything is Antisemitic/anti-Israel" folks, and they make it harder to point out actual Antisemitism.

It should be lost on no one that there are literally US sanctions on Israeli settlers, a ceasefire agreement being aggressively pushed, and "pro-Palestine" Westerners are still whining about Starbucks and Standing Together.
It is impossible to overstate the level of damage, potentially irreversible, Netanyahu and his cronies are careening toward, and baffling to see how many "pro-Israel" people and institutions seem not to care.
Two Israeli hostages being freed is incredible. The relief the family, the nation must feel is beyond words.
The amount of death and destruction in Gaza is painful, the sadness they must feel is beyond words.
Using the heaviness of this moment for cheap gotchas is sickening.
A strategic campaign that takes longer but targets Hamas while protecting civilians. A negotiated pause to release hostages. Political leadership that speaks of negotiations and a Palestinian state for security. Strengthening the PA. Ending the settlement project. You're welcome.

Because successive Israeli governments have said with their full chest that there will never be a Palestinian state, and have implemented policies to prevent it.
The fact is that Jordan and Egypt have accepted peace with Israel, borders were established, there are no Israeli troops occupying them, and these peace agreements have held up until the present day.
Why can't Palestine do the same???
Simply begging non-Jews to stop making us compete against our own past suffering and trauma.
It is erev passover. Allow us at the very least our chag to honour our pain, the pain we feel for others. Our fear, the fear we feel for others. And to search for a glimmer of hope.
To put the Columbia protests story in context, in 2018 and 2019 far-right shooters massacred 12 Jews in 2 separate synagogues in America. I don’t remember this level of hysteria from our political or media elites, or ex-Meta execs saying they were fleeing to Israel to be safe.
@herringschmaltz
Allowing racism to fester in our community isn't "trashing each other" it's holding each other to our own Jewish values and commitments.
Calls to be silent in the name of unity are calls to be complicit with hate.
Hasbara has to reckon with the last 15+ years of Israeli politicians saying with their whole chest that they don't want the Palestinians to have a state.
Come up with a new line, make a new excuse, or stop doing hasbara because this is just silly.
As someone with my own issues with orgs like Hillel, I'll say this-
If pro-Palestine, or any other groups, wish to see a change to Jewish life on campus or elsewhere, their best bet STILL is working with a broad coalition of Jews, including Zionists, to build it.
I am a citizen of two countries with complex histories and struggling presents.

How we react is with anger at one another. What lies underneath this, and what both groups have in common is sadness and loneliness. What happens if we don't move past this is a complete abandonment of one of the most crucial pillars of our community. (2/2)
I would argue that calling for an end to the war through a commitment to two-state negotiations for a lasting peace is actually far more powerful than "ceasefire" which implies a temporary commitment.
This letter by J-Street neither uses the word “ceasefire” nor “Palestinian” and cites a former Israeli general to furnish its case. As with most liberal US Jewish Israel advocacy orgs, Palestinians are not equal players but side characters in their political imagination.
This is part of the reason I choose to strongly identify as a Zionist. For many, even shedding the Zionist label would still have me tagged disparagingly as one bc I refuse to dehumanize Israelis.
So I may as well hold it tightly, proudly, & reclaim it for what it means to me.
The UN wants Israel to accept a ceasefire so that hostages are released, aid can get to innocent Gazans, and a humanitarian crisis can be curbed.
At this point, Hasbara is cutting off its nose to spite its face. Too bad the face in this case is Israeli hostages.
The UN wants Israel to accept a ceasefire out of respect for Ramadan.
Remind me: did Hamas respect the Jewish holiday of Sukkot when it launched an attack and murdered more Jews than any day since the Holocaust?
