When I started to watch the French Catch footage in 2020, I posted a bunch of gifs on DVDVR. I figure I'll start posting them with some context at around one a day. It was striking to see timid Lord Alfred as a beast, a Backlund/Brock combo. Here he's taking Guy Robin's head off.

You learn so much about AEW wrestlers by how they fill time in the spot-absent PiPs. Roddy improvising that he couldn't find a table to get heat with the annoying crowd was way more compelling pro wrestling than meticulously choreographed and perfectly executed reversal fests.

When I was a kid, feuds were so rigid that very few wrestlers interacted with one another. As a fan, you wanted to know what they thought of everything going on, for wrestling to feel like a unified and vibrant world. What I’m trying to say is that we need “Eddie’s Den” weekly.

Amazing sequence from 82 Andre where he sells the impact of something without Fujinami even making contact with him. This takes such confidence and presence and understanding of himself, his opponent, the crowd. And of course, he knows exactly when and how to shut it all down.

Not going to lie. This is some of the best stuff I've ever seen Bruiser Brody involved in. It's all over the top but in the most iconic of ways. Repressive beating. Tangible dread as the table gets involved. Punch-drunk comeback by Murdoch as blood flies and the crowd goes wild.

Amazing stuff. Vulcano loses his cool and tears off Villano's mask. Then, between falls, he rips it off again, tearing it up. So a kid comes from the stands to give Villano his shirt to cover up. When Villano storms back later, he has the shirt around his hand for his punches.

This 1975 Baba vs Dick the Bruiser match is shocking as most Bruiser footage has him as a tough, Popeye-esque face, not not unyielding and brutal like here. It's not the best 70s Baba match, but it's a favorite, especially this comeback. You'll never see Baba chops the same way.

The crux of what makes wrestling amazing is in the transitions, the built up pressure/payoff of momentum shifting, be it a hot tag in a southern tag or implicit stone sharpening stone in an All Japan classic. Action is the means, not the end. Value the emotion not the sensation.

Conventional (workrate) wisdom is wrong. Stalling (in general) and Zbyszko (in specific) are not lazy. This contains effort and effect. He is "on" every second, building and building potential energy and anticipation for when Stevens does get him. This is valid, artful wrestling.

PiP has been a boon to the house style. It forces slower, more methodological/purposeful heat into almost every match when natural inclinations may be to run 50/50 spotfests. Wrestling is fueled by heat; the live crowd is thereby taken up and down and up again; matches mean more.

As someone with an academic background in history, I can fairly safely say that this 1984 left-handed arm-tied arm wrestling match was a key turning point in the cold war. Ivan called this "capitalistic propaganda." Dusty's facial contortions - not much leaves me speechless but..

Orndorff is great here stooging and feeding for David, but watch Heenan and Bruno on the margins. You just see Bobby tumble from the side of the screen and then the arms flailing upwards as Bruno even threatens to come towards him. Amazing.

There comes a time for every wrestling fan to leave conventional wisdom behind, brave the crucible of footage, work out what moves them. Maybe they confirm their priors. That’s ok. But maybe they realize there’s so much more out there to love. This thread is the place to start.

Junkyard Dog is one of the most important figures over the last 50 years of wrestling. Someone who truly transcended wrestling & became a cultural icon in his time & place. Most remember his later years or not at all. Remember him as a legend. Match Recommendations:

A thread of inspiration (and aspiration) for @The_MJF on the eve of All In. Do our country proud. Show them that the timeless power of pro wrestling is still vibrant and strong, even in 2024.

Niche post but I’ve been watching the Jumbo Tsuruta trial series in order. I suggest others do the same. After seeing the effort and struggle for every move in the 76 matches (Verne, Robinson, Funk), seeing Race throw away big moves early for cheap sensation is very aggravating.

Leaned hard into this review of Page vs Danielson (w/Jarrett) with my heart on my sleeve: story vs plot; character motivations; Page (who I am traditionally critical of) in July of 2024; the match itself and how it all comes together. Thoughts are welcome.

Fujiwara coming out for the August 1987 5x5 NOW vs NEW match. The little breath to show he's human. The little look as he takes the flowers. The complete indifference that follows. He doesn't hesitate. He doesn't miss a beat. Just steady, fluid motion that tells a thousand tales.

The best use of lore that I’ve come across in pro wrestling is the idea that Jumbo Tsuruta successfully mastered “the four different types of suplexes” in the 70s. They made it seem like a mythic accomplishment but it was all based in-ring and grounded in the wrestling itself.

I’m a firm believer that some promoter is going to make major money on Connelly’s eyes alone someday. They contain multitudes of pro wrestling stories, complex or primal, just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world.

One #ACTIONDean thought: True confidence/ presence up and down the card. Slim J and Priest paced themselves for real build in an age of instant gratification. Sucklings let themselves be reviled so VIP could be LOD. Corino committed to the headlock. Wrestling works if you let it.

Exceeded my expectations. If this seems at all your thing, I can assure you it is absolutely your thing. If you can't find elements of greatness in this (even if not your thing), then your views of pro wrestling are sadly limited. Hot crowd. Hard hitting. Studd's career match.

While today is very much a good day to talk about wrestling in Germany….. I converted the VHS tape today with Big John Studd vs Otto Wanz in Germany from December 1983… 49 minutes for just this match (including the intros)! Great to watch with some Fish & Chips!

We lost DEAN a year ago today. #ACTIONDean was a month ago. Phil, Eric, and Matt (and EVERYONE there) made something truly special. It took me a while to find the words to write up the show. For as good as it was, it was tough to write about, but worth it.

The 2nd Jumbo test match vs Rusher Kimura. Strike exchanges today don't like this. They react. Jumbo was just 25. Rusher was ten years his senior and a star. This was Rusher feeling him out. Verne took him to the mat and tested his skill. Rusher was testing his spirit, his fire.
