We cannot normalize the use of the Notwithstanding Clause, particularly in collective bargaining.
It's been used to eliminate the rights of CUPE workers, it's coming for all of education.
No worker will have rights if this becomes standard practice.

I'm not interested in return to school discourse that doesn't centre the abysmal failures of this government. If you are blaming teachers, doctors, parents who need child care or ANYONE other than Ford, Lecce & their reactive & repeated penny pinching, I don't wanna read it.
What it's like to have COVID in the Education system: a thread.
(Seeing as it's my third time go around, a play-by-play for those who haven't experienced it yet).
Wednesday & Thursday last week: send home more than one child for a worsening cough and fever.
1/
How are these two things happening at the same time?
1 - If anyone in your house has any symptom of COVID you must stay home & isolate for 5 days.
2 - If three of your classmates are COVID positive, you don’t have to isolate at all - just self monitor.
Super glad that everyone’s blaming Trudeau for the airport staffing challenges because now that means we can hop in a time machine and everyone can blame Ford for the totally public and ACTUALLY within his control shortages in health care and education, right?

We have pennies for photocopies.
Want students to get off their phones? You need to support teachers, rather than creating a culture that questions their every move. And you need to invest $ in resources.

There is growing support for limiting cell phones in schools.

I can’t believe that Ford and Lecce’s plan is tutoring.
At risk kids deserve support during school hours so they can spend their time after school being part of their community in a way that fills their spirit.
Tutoring, outside of the classroom, isn’t it.

In about a decade of teaching at a single Peel high school, I’ve heard the f slur more times in the last month than I’ve heard all previous ten years combined.
The hate discourse is bleeding into the vocabulary of children.
Had to call parents, of course, and let them know that their kids were super unwell. Kids came to school because a test, because their parents wouldn't believe them, etc.
Yes, I wear a mask when I teach and have a non-authorized, non-approved air filter in my class.

Did I mention? Staff are being monitored by an Attendance Support Program that triggers at 6 occurrences or 11 absences. Pretty soon I'll get a letter from my Principal asking what she can do to "support" my attendance at school.

On a day when a school board has suspended (almost) all professional development during the school day, a reminder that your own time is your own time and you do not owe a thing to your employer, especially one that treats its employees so poorly they can’t hire or retain staff.
All the while we are teaching WITHOUT A CONTRACT under the restrictive (now proven unconstitutional) legislation of Bill 124. The connection between the crisis in staffing and the way school boards and the ministry treat and compensate their employees is undeniable.

In Peel, once we exceed 11 days or 5 separate occurrences, we qualify for attendance monitoring. I'd like to posit that this disproportionately harms women, whose health is often cyclical, and folks with migraine, who often have multiple occurrences rather than lengthy ones.
There's a supply teacher shortage. My guidance teacher/spec ed friends are regularly redeployed to cover classes. I want to be SURE someone is there to cover my class.
Because my GC and spec ed friends have been pulled away from suicidal kids and CAS calls to cover classes.

I've posted lesson plans, but now I get an email saying that my senior class is being sent to the library for "independent study" aka class is cancelled.
Our spec ed head & librarian are redeployed today, meaning students aren't getting library service or spec ed support.

Gonna have a normal Saturday. Do some laundry, clean up, batch cook, obsessively refresh the feed of the lawyer guy who is live-tweeting the Ontario Labour Relations Board hearing.

Still no Ministry of Labour inspector. Apparently they are short staffed because of COVID. I’ll be back in my car tomorrow morning, waiting for a safe school.
In the meantime, my colleague Lindsay is documenting her reasons for refusal here. Check her out.
Also, staffing shortages aren't a "not enough daily supply teachers for sick teachers" problem. We also have at least 2 contract teachers worth of jobs that aren't being taught right now.
At one point in OCTOBER we had TWENTY-ONE courses that didn't have a teacher.

Special Education needs in Peel have exploded. We're cutting that whole department, but saving Comms so we can still have cute little videos? Bureaucratic positions remain intact, while kids who need braille go without vision itinerants? What is this absolute mess?
Lecce & Ford have plunged the entire education system into months (years) of uncertainty because they made decisions without thinking. They are responsible for the poor mental health of thousands of Ontario teachers, parents & children. We have all suffered. This is not a win.
I know students who have half a day not being taught by a teacher. Two courses. So half the day they have teachers, the other half the day they have rotating supplies, on-calls, redeployments, cancelled classes and canned lesson plans.

Hey, this is your Sunday night reminder that Stephen Lecce is a terrible MoE and has never not been terrible.
Thinking about all my students, all they need, all they aren't getting.
Ending whole class isolation and asking under 12s to self monitor is a move meant to appeal to Ford’s anti-science, anti-education, anti-child base.
This is a reckless abdication of leadership that will cost the lives of the most vulnerable.
K, so now that we’ve all laughed at the memes, can we talk about the long term health consequences of what’s about to happen to our schools? As someone who’s been jam packed with migraines since COVID, I’m worried.
Serious question: if our kids contract covid because of school, can we take paid sick days? I.e. if my employer’s lack of funding makes my child ill, will my employer also dock my pay while I care for that child? Asking for teaching parents.

What is the point of asking teachers to be in a school building to have a virtual meeting?
Is it to test the internet bandwidth when we all livestream at once? That’s literally the only reason that makes sense to me.
Or are you only interested in surveillance and control?
So far I've seen a half dozen official posts from school boards and unions talking about pink shirt day and vague stuff about bullying.

Just wanted everyone to know that the “resources” I received for supporting students this week were the same old mental health round up resources.
School boards aren’t actually helping teachers through this. In case you believed their press releases.
If we drop mask mandates in schools, rates of staff illness — not just COVID, but common colds — will go way up.
