journey to publication is often difficult. Even if you're not going to work with someone, try—even in a small way—to help them along the way. If nothing else, it can lighten the load.
The strongest communities of writers ✍️ I’ve seen are the ones that lift each other up—rather than pushing someone down. Lending a helping hand 🖐️ and experiencing the good 😌 karma that goes with it is the way to get ahead.

In Budapest, there is a book 📖 fountain ⛲ that looks like an open book. At regular intervals, a sheet of water 💧 curves to one side to give the illusion of a page being turned.
I was pitching a potential client, running my mouth about how much the literary agency rocks—until they stopped me, asking what I love most about what I do. I told them: "Making people's dreams come true." They said that was good and signed! Now I know how to start every meeting.

The publishing industry invests heavily in celeb/franchise authors. Penguin vs. DOJ trial exposes monopoly block, big advances for celebs, reliance on bestsellers/backlist. Concerns rise over Amazon's dominance and tech disruptions.
A Ukrainian book publisher sent us an offer, and I couldn't be prouder of the Ukrainians and their literary community to be continuing their book publishing efforts, especially in the midst of the war in Ukraine. 🇺🇦📘📙

I don't know if other literary agents or editors have this experience, but do you ever read a book again, after you read it as an unedited manuscript—now as a final book—and feel warmth in your heart that you helped, even in some small way, bring a book to life?

Can you believe Melville author of MOBY-Dick died poor/misunderstood? Or that one editor famously passed on Benchley's JAWS calling it "The poor man's MOBY-DICK"? Book publishing is a highly subjective business! Now keep your chin up & you'll get there soon! 🐳

One of the hardest things you could ever do is write a book. 📕 It's like being the actors, director, cinematographer, sound guy, screenplay writer, all at once. 🎥 If that still doesn't make sense, try playing ensemble music as a one man band. 🎺

I’ve come to find that teaching writers about writing, literature & publishing is just as much about nurturing creativity as it is preparing authors for the book world.
Remember, hopeful writers, it's a building process in becoming a published author. Stone-by-stone and soon enough you'll have a publishing house.

📚 Books are the like the fine oil paintings 🖼️ of traditional mass media: there is a level of difficulty, it often requires working in layers, ink takes time to dry on the canvas and it helps to work from life experience. 🖌️🎨🖋️✍️
