There’s a pirate version of Champagne Football being sent around. ☹️ Would appeal for folks not to send it around and to support our journalism instead.

Just spent the last three hours in the High Court after John Delaney tried to get an emergency injunction to prevent us reporting on FAI and Delaney payments. The judge ruled in our favour! Story in
@SunTimesIreland
tomorrow. 🙂
Just been told by
@PenguinIEBooks
that there’s been massive demand for Champagne Football and they’ve just ordered a second print run of the book which will hit the shops at end of next week. Thanks for all the support! 🍾⚽️
Breaking: After a two-year legal battle, the High Court has rejected former FAI boss John Delaney's attempt to claim privilege over 1,000+ documents which would have kept them from investigators in Corporate Enforcement Authority who are carrying out a criminal investigation.
Devastatingly effective dismantling of Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters case from Judge Charles Meenan. No response to affidavit from Dept of Health. And then, “unsubstantiated opinions, speeches, empty rhetoric and a bogus historical parallel are not a substitute for facts”.
Who had Sinn Fein defending Leo Varadkar from an Elon Musk attack on their bingo cards?
Kudos to David Cullinane for taking the high road and risking the wrath of all the Musk devotees.
Just got word from
@PenguinIEBooks
that Champagne Football was the number one selling book in Ireland last week! There were 4,645 books sold in just three days. 😮 Amazing. Thanks to everyone for all the great feedback and support for myself and
@paulrowantree
🥂⚽️
We've been digging deep into the John Delaney regime at the FAI and are excited to announce our book Champagne Football is now available for pre-order from Easons. Will hit book shops in Sept - barring any last-minute injunction attempts! Appreciate RTs
One politician was sent an advance copy because she was the only one who asked serious questions about FAI governance over a long period of time before the shit hit the fan last year.
Big personal news… After 16 years, this weekend is my last with
@SunTimesIreland
. Made great friends, learned a lot, upset some people and broke some great yarns with a super team. It’s been the best job I’ve ever had. Looking forward to a new challenge starting late June. 📰
Interestingly, RTE's auditor is Richard Howard from Deloitte, who football fans will know was the FAI's auditor for years until the sh*t hit the fan in 2019 and Deloitte resigned at the end of that year.
Asked
@Donie
for an interview last Wednesday BEFORE the Trump rally. 😱 He’s been busy since then but the gent that he is he still found time to talk with me about what became a crazy week for him and the beat he covers. Watch out for his interview in
@SunTimesIreland
tomorrow 📰
So, there was an intriguing debate about the Extinction Rebellion protests on Virgin Media One on Thursday night. Broadcaster Niall Boylan held up a chart to back up a claim that the number of natural disasters is actually decreasing over the last 100 years.
Disappointing standards shown by
@offtheball
last night. They allow John Giles to read a prepared statement on air and agree not to ask him one single question. Statement attacked ST but no opportunity given to us to respond. Then they post the statement up as a story...
Today is exactly 5 years, 6 months and 7 days since the Irish women's team had to threaten strike action, in the face of serious intimidation, to secure better conditions from the FAI. What a turnaround. ⚽️ 🇮🇪
The Cass report has a clear message: medical interventions on children should be backed by scientific evidence that they work and are safe. This was the reaction from a TD in 2022 when I reported Irish doctors' concerns about the HSE use of Tavistock to treat over 200 Irish kids.
Amazing interview from Maria Bailey on RTÉ. Attacking journalists for reporting facts she put before the court and refusing to say why she thought the hotel was responsible for her injuries after she fell off a swing.
Absolutely delighted to get this award with
@paulrowantree
for Champagne Football from
@AnPostIBAS
. Thanks to everyone who helped us. Great to see such support for investigative journalism. Lucky hoody came through again! 📚🍾⚽️
We looked at doing a Champagne Football podcast last year and the only firm sponsorship offers to help fund it came from bookies. We turned that down. No way. Much of the advertising from the gambling industry is really insidious. It should be regulated way more than it is.
"We are really concerned that we are raising a generation of children who think that betting and football are synonymous and in doing that creating an epidemic of gambling"

I remember Charlie Bird taking time to help show us around the RTE newsroom when I was a student journalist on a class trip to Montrose 17 years ago. A class act.

Delighted to confirm that myself and
@paulrowantree
are working on a book about the FAI for next year with
@PenguinIEBooks
📚 My DMs are open for anyone who wants to share their experiences of what happened under the Delaney regime.
Biggest team in the country caught breaking GAA and Covid rules? It’s definitely front page news. Even the most ardent Dub supporters should be able to see that instead of attacking the newspaper that broke the story.
Have a premium subscription
@Independent_ie
and this is front page news - I’m not saying that it was right what went on (by no means) but front page? All that’s going on at the min and this is your headline story?

Have had a couple of offers from people to post or Revolut me money for Champagne Football after they got the pirated version. Please support your local bookshops and don’t use or pass around a pirated copy that isn’t even the complete version of the book. 👍
"Having watched all of the Bloody Sunday shooters testify, I can say with certainty that they include not only unapologetic killers, but unrelenting liars."
Stunned over this.😀Bestselling Irish published book in 2020! Held off a late charge from
@irelandincolour
Thanks to everyone who helped us get this story in print. Great to hear from so many readers since. So many have their own jaw-dropping stories that would fill another book!
We are over the moon that Nielsen ICM data today confirms that Champagne Football, by
@marktigheST
and
@paulrowantree
, is Ireland's bestselling Irish-published book of 2020, selling a staggering 49,307 copies. We couldn't be prouder.
The student whose experience with Al Porter was that he was groped and kissed by him when he was in a psychiatric hospital is one of the bravest and most impressive people I've dealt with in my time as a reporter with the Sunday Times. This young man spoke about being groped 1/3
Our book Champagne Football was released exactly one year ago today. Great that we have reached that milestone and we haven't been sued!😃 Also delighted that a new paperback edition will go on sale at the end of this month. 🍾⚽️ 📚
RIP Robert Fisk. Amazing career as a journalist and newspaperman. Got to meet and interview him when I was doing my journalism course in

A lot of detail in this story and much more inside in News and in Sport with
@paulrowantree
on FAI and John Delaney. Worth it to

tomorrow!
I love it when
#FOI
works. Over a year after making a request I’ve got my hands on the contracts signed by the state 💴 , the FAI⚽️ and the IRFU🏉 to build and manage what became the Aviva stadium🏟. Some fascinating details. Story

tomorrow.
That’s a huge impact

✅ EU Commissioner resigned
✅ Government Minister and Deputy FF leader resigned
✅ Deputy Leader of the Seanad resigned
✅ Supreme Court judge under investigation by former Chief Justice.
Myself +
@paulrowantree
just got news that Champagne Football is the
#1
bestselling book in Ireland for a second week with 4,502 copies sold. The second print run hits shops today so it should be easier to find copies. Thanks for all the support. We’re absolutely delighted! 🍾⚽️
We have been busy bees this week. Some cracking stories on FAI and John Delaney coming in The Sunday Times tomorrow from myself,
@paulrowantree
and
@colincoyle
One week on from that late night press release it’s great that the biggest story in Irish football is a young Irish striker smashing two goals in against Spurs. Take a bow
@AaronConnolly_9
👏
Pubs will be allowed to reopen on 29 June if they serve "substantial" meals costing not less than €9, according to new guidelines being prepared by Fáilte Ireland.
Brian Kerr should be the first of the independent directors appointed to the FAI board. A deep knowledge of football, a keen eye for wasteful spending, and, most importantly, he’ll never be a yes-man.
Thanks for all the support, folks. Champagne Football is currently ranked 390th out of 6m+ books on which is pretty cool. It’s great to support the terrific local Irish bookshops out there though and pls don’t pass on pirated books. 📚
