Margaret Atwood was one of three judges who gave me the $30,000 RBC Charles Taylor Prize, the most prestigious prize in Canadian non-fiction writing. Here, we talk about grackles, writing, and whether Toronto is freally a part of Canada:
How hard would it be for a few of us Ottawa lawyers to find clients among downtown businesses to relieve the Omicronvoy of its slush fund via a class action?
If Pierre Poilievre is the best "leader" that a country of 40 million people can hork up, and Doug Ford is the best that a province of 14 million can find, d'ya think maybe something is wrong with the political system, that it might be too toxic for the smart and talented?
There were no Canadians on the mini-sub Titan, and it was not operating in Canadian waters. Yet Canadian ships and planes searched for it. A Canadian submersible found the wreckage. It would be nice if U.S. media and the U.S. Coast Guard could acknowledge those facts.
Here's some backstory about my sister's porcupine friend:
My sister lives in a log house in a forest near Ottawa with deer, turkeys, fishers and assorted wildlife. Even the odd moose. This gal's been around the place for a while. She fell out of a tree and landed by my sister's…
My sweet old dog Lily dropped dead of a heat attack or stroke tonight while playing in the park. It is so hard to let them go but it was the perfect dog death.
Seeing what's happening in Windsor and Ottawa, I'm worried, for the first time in this thing, that real power is slipping away from elected politicians. It looks like there is no will by the police to enforce court orders and do their duty.
If Ottawa's tow truck operators want to breach their contracts with the city, the military has a machine that can tow any truck.
If it's deployed, the tow truck operators should be sued for the cost of transporting and operating it.
Ottawa welcomes Tamara Lich for Canada Day!!!
Convoyers: to celebrate with her, take Highway 417 east from downtown, get off at the Innis Road exit and go east on Innis until you find what looks like a high school with a very serious fence.
Forensic investigator shows WE Charity was a well-run organization. Media incompetence and political opportunism destroyed Canada’s best organization for encouraging youth activism and service.
Yesterday's Toronto Sun editorial cartoon managed to pro-Putin and anti-Semitic at the same time. It really is the shittiest paper in the English-speaking world. I don't want my tax money spent on saving it from well-deserved bankruptcy:
The federal Tories encouraged a mob to try to overthrow, or at least destabilize, the government of Canada. Now they wallow in a review of the use of the Emergencies Act as though they are champions of democracy. And the media doesn't call them on it.
Shepherds of Good Hope, whose ambulance parking space was taken by a truck, whose staff were abused and threatened, and who were forced to feed "protesters", is trying to calm residents and staff who have been subjected to 48 hours of horn-blasting.
Please feel free to sing as much as you like in the days leading up to my funeral. Sea shanties, dirty songs we sang together as kids, tunes we blasted at 10 on the stereo, songs from records we picked out together, songs we heard together at concerts. Celebrate life.
Much as I dislike driving Highway 401, I will make a special stop at Brewers Pantry in Bowmanville to load up my trunk. I don't even drink beer, but lots of my family and friends do.
Pierre Poilievre called Prime Minister Trudeau a “wacko”. Any journalist who pretends that’s within the rules of the House of Commons is incompetent or lying.
Was feeling sorry for the poor, dumb bastards who have lost their trucks. Then remembered how many times they were warned, how many escape hatches they were given, how the police were willing to let them leave, right to the bitter end.
If people think some blockades and border crossings are scary, wait until the next Covid wave make it impossible to staff hospitals and nursing homes.
We really could have beat this thing. We, and our leaders, just weren't up to the challenge.
Just received word from
@TwitterSafety
it's OK with them for its users to encourage the murder of Canadian government leaders.
When we are out of this mess, social media needs to be brought to heel.
Interesting to hear CBC's The Current spend more than a half hour on the airport SNAFU story with barely a word about absenteeism due to active COVID-19 cases. Not really sure of the point of the coverage.
Train trip from Ottawa to Windsor and back, two people, economy class, very off-season, no weekend trips, taking 11 hours, costs $718.
@VIA_Rail
, you're not really serious about being an alternative to driving, are you?
@LeslynLewis
I have the same doctoral degrees that you have, and neither of us are qualified to diagnose a common cold. You are entitled to call yourself "doctor" for your PhD but not to mislead people, deliberately or otherwise, into believing you have some kind of medical training.
This is starting to look like a slow-motion fascist coup, a January 6, 2021 where the police are letting it happen, aimed at ending the Trudeau minority government. It is the most severe attack on the legitimacy of the state and its democratic supports in our history.
My thoughts on the Ontario election:
People get the government they deserve. At this stage in its moral and intellectual development, Ontario deserves Doug Ford, and are about to get a real big load of him.
My last word today about the Clownwoy: Trudeau needs to learn straight talk. He should have called out police chief Sloly. He should have verbally smacked Premier Ford and Mayor Watson. He should have used words that were clear and blunt, instead of the reasonable daddy bullshit.
Changing the channel from Zelenskyy's excellent speech and his successful trip to Canada to an ill-informed debate about the 14th SS (Galicia) in a day was a master stroke by Putin's apologists in Canada. They got help by ignorant, desperate media and a power-hungry Opposition.
Canada is about to be taken over by hillbillies.
Keep track of who wanted this, who fought against it and who didn't. We got rid of this eight years ago but the country didn't learn. And working people will suffer most. (My family will get a fat tax cut).
And so it begins out in the open. The authoritarian fascist Conservatives are transphobic, homophobic, anti diversity, pro-white, anti renewable energy and they still don't believe in climate change. Banning abortions will be on the table.
The media/Tory claim that there was a deal left on the table when
@JustinTrudeau
invoked the Emergencies Act is debunked by a quick look at the record. There was no deal. The occupiers had no plans to leave. There is no evidence that the border blockades had stopped.
This guy did more to restore the
@OttawaPolice
reputation than any police board member. Second prize goes to Steve Bell, who should get the chief job permanently.
I hope that the calm,respectful adult restraint shown by
#OfficerMcDimples
is what Canadians take away & remember most about the occupation(s) of Ottawa by the angry, hateful, childish, fringe minority who parade their immaturity & ignorance like schoolyard bullies.
Well done Sir
I'm never surprised when Hill journalists miss a big story that's right in front of them. Trudeau's move of Anita Anand to Treasury Board may not signal a wing-clip. It may mean a powerful minister was brought in to fix a public service with serious post-covid problems.
We all know the Emergencies Act case will end up at the Supreme Court of Canada, which will apply the Oakes test properly. Untilthen, every media and Tory cockroach in Canada (usually one and the same) will claim to have the legal knowledge of a seasoned appellant lawyer.
To be blunt, I do not like living in a province where the government wages war on the poor, and next to a province that oppresses minorities. Canadians better take a long, cold look at what we are becoming.
People in Alberta knew she was stupid and crazy. They voted for her anyway. They chose what they saw as personal economic self-interest over the good of the province and the country.
On CBC yesterday, Smith claimed that CEO’s who built new power plants would be incarcerated if plants weren’t “almost 100% abated” by 2035.
And then CBC fact checked her.
It’s an embarrassment every day in this province…

4,000 years ago, Ea Nasir was the biggest crook in Assyria. He cheated people on land, sold shabby cloth and impure copper. Customers wrote scathing letters to him on 100s of clay tablets, which he kept. Archaeologists found them. We know more about him than anyone of his time.
Seeing the hard-right trying to spin Zelenskyy's excellent House of Commons speech into some kind of showcase for the Waffen SS is despicable, and completely in tune with their role as Putin apologists.
Today's most dumbass take on politics.
Anyone who doesn't know Poilievre is planning to open a can of neo-fascist high-test whoop-ass on everything progressive in Canada hasn't been keeping up. When Brian Mulroney warns you, listen to the wily old crook.
OK, folks, let's take apart an Andrew Coyne tweet an d show just how divorced from reality the privileged Toronto-based pundit class has become. (thread)
My wife did a phone-in order for groceries, including a five-pound ham to feed a family of seven. Now she is trying to work out a way to cook five pounds of sliced Black Forest ham that cost $70. She's resourceful. It'll be great.
Apparently traffic at the Ontario-Quebec border in Ottawa-Gatineau is backed up six kilometres into Quebec as Ontario enforces a non-solution to a non-problem by violating the Charter.
My take:
This protest will not hurt the Liberals or NDP at all. It may help.
It may split Tories between those in the CPC who stand with people who tolerate Nazi flags and "memoranda of understanding" advocating the overthrow of the Canadian state, and those who will not.
Another epic fail weekend in Ottawa: Highway 417 from Ottawa to Montreal has lots of nuckleheads in trucks headed toward Ottawa. Cops should have shut down all access to downtown Ottawa this morning and started clearing the streets.
They were actually remotely casting votes on a bill in the House of Commons. But hey, you’ll never see crap like this debunked by social media companies or by Canadian journalists.
Just drove through Gatineau QC, where gas jumped from $1.43 to $1.78 since March 31. If you think that’s because of the carbon tax, you’re not doing your homework.
Waiting for Poilievre, who cares so much about working Canadians, to denounce gouging oil companies. I’m patient.
There is something about Justin Trudeau that infuriates weak men, and men who seem unsettled in their masculinity. It is a psycho-sexual thing, a fury of envy. It is especially strong among men who don't have what it takes to partner with beautiful, strong women.
Months ago, Canadaland strongly implied WE Charity was going to be thrown out of Kenya. Never happened. What did happen was WE Charity was destroyed in Canada by shitty reporting and the most unscrupulous politicians in Canada.
Let me help you with this, Andy.
The Trudeau family does not own or control the Trudeau Foundation and draws no benefit from it. The foundation is administered by the Universite' de Montreal and gives scholarships to top-ranked students.
Rhodes Scholars don't get diamonds.
You can tell how dangerous Putin is by seeing how Sweden, which hasn’t fought a war since 1814, gave up neutrality and joined NATO because of Russia’s threat to European peace.
These guys seem very upset by the fact that this cop is very cool, charismatic, good-looking and unshakable. Between the "Fuck, Trudeau?" signs and commentaries like this, I think the Freedumbers are struggling with desires that they can't suppress.
Getting pretty clear to me that the appalling treatment of
@gregfergus
is motivated by more than just politics.

You didn’t do your homework. CBC is funded by the government but operates under terms of Canada’s Broadcast Act that makes government interference illegal. Next time, show up prepared.
Telcomm companies got monopoly protection in return for public service. They were given licenses after promising to provide the money for local journalism. They've broken the contract.
Fourteen years ago, Bell told Canada that its takeover of CTV would be a benefit to this country. It was part of the hype, pushed by corporations and journalism schools, that "convergence" was something more than monopoly-building and job cuts.
Passports. I vaguely remember something about the end of Canada as we know it if something, I forget what, happened to the passports. I think that was three media panics ago.
Today's great logical flaws in Canadian punditry:
1. CSIS is on the ball and all its leaks on Chinese interference are completely, take-it-to-the-bank trustworthy; but
2. CSIS can't be trusted when it says India had a Sikh agitator whacked in Canada and we need to see proof.
Many people said this was why Modi and Trudeau were cold to each other. The media insisted Modi thought Trudeau was an irrelevant lightweight. It was a projection of their own bias:
If you read the story carefully, there's only one possible conclusion:p Canada can't afford to have a PM, any PM, go on holidays because we will gag on the cost of security and infrastructure to maintain the PM's bubble. I see no other reason why Thomson would write this.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Easter weekend vacation in Montana cost taxpayers nearly a quarter of a million dollars, CBC News has learned — far more than the sum reported to Parliament.
I don’t object to Elon Musk building electric cars, but I do object to his using the money to promote racism, hate, Russian propaganda, to interfere directly with the defence of Ukraine, and to allow
#Twitter
to become a cesspool of robotic disinformation…2
Trumpism comes to Canada, brought to us by the same kinds of online and mainstream media that brought it to America. Hat tip to the Toronto Sun, Rebel News, Small Dead Animals and the rest:
Outreach vehicles for the homeless couldn't get around downtown Ottawa to help people in -35 weather. Emergency vehicles were blocked. Addicted, homeless people were bullied. Seems their "freedom" wasn't to important to these people.
They are now making fascist salutes in front of it.
This is the most shameful day in Canadian history. Canada has never been so humiliated.
The entire senior management of the Ottawa police service should be fired for this alone.
WE Charity has won its forum case in Washington, DC. That means its lawsuit against the CBC's Fifth Estate will be heard in federal court in Washington, not in Canada, where the SLAPP law regime is out of control. And American libel awards can be brutal.
While the China attempt to influence election results is an intyeresting story, there might be one that's just as good that the Hill media pack is missing: why is CSIS, or elements inside CSIS, trying to destroy this government? Because this sure looks to me like a coup.
If we are going to talk about foreign interference in Canadian politics, when do we start talking about the Americans? Or are we just going to accept that, in many ways, we're just a satellite and move on?
Seeing Canadian journos suddenly discovering the dangers of disinformation makes me seriously want to puke. Where were they when I wrote books on this in 2015 and 2016?
Frankly, I'm getting into a social media and Canadian publishing funk again. Closing Twitter account at 5 p.m.
Listening to
@EvanLSolomon
fillet the Russian ambassador to Canada as he tried to lie his way out of Russia’s war crimes was inspiring. Solomon refused to be bullied.
Quebec, the secular state: The cross on Mount Royal is owned by the City of Montreal. For those who argue that it's a cultural artifact, not a religious beacon, the city changes the colour from white to purple when a pope dies, leaving them purple until a new one is elected.
This is what fascism looks like. "My laws". A dictator who will meddle with the courts. A liar who says a man sentenced to life in prison got a 25-year sentence. A man with utter contempt for the media, justice system, Parliament, anything that might be a check on his power.
In his column today, liar Brian Lilley leaves out the people dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the urination on the war memorial, the intimidation of homeless shelter staff. In his propaganda, people were just having a little fun with the Terry Fox statue.
I think Canada’s biggest problem is that so many people who live here have seen so little of it, have no pride in it, and have no inclination to work to protect it or even learn about it. I doubt there are many countries where so many people are disconnected from the space they…
Going to be interesting to see what happens in Windsor.
If you try to screw with democracy, the people who have real power in this society will be just fine with it. You screw with money and profits, the reaction will almost certainly be less, um, pleasant.
What the ever-loving fuck!? Cops let at least ten cords of firewood be dumped in Confederation Park near Parliament Hill for these thugs.
It is becoming easier to believe that at least some authorities in Ottawa are in on this.
This must stop. It has been an epic fail on the part of police, who have rolled out the welcome mat to people who obviously despise Ottawa, and who are anti-social to start with. It's clear now that an attempt to accommodate political rights was interpreted as a sign of weakness.
This is nonsense. When journalists get stories wrong or blow them out of proportion, there are no consequences, as a review of any senior journalist's portfolio and career will show. Look at the destruction of WE Charity. And so many Coyne columns that were dead wrong.
Reporters/editors involved are pretty experienced, understand the stakes — for them, as much as the people they write about. If they get it wrong they’ll pay the price: reputationally, financially. Which gives them a pretty strong incentive to get it right.
If Stephen Harper believed David Johnston was a Trudeau (PET or Justin) buddy, he would never have put Johnston in Rideau Hall. And he would have had people check to see. Everyone who knows anything about Harper knows that’s true. Especially the Press Gallery reporters.

When you catch Covid in Ontario, there’s no one to report it to. It’s scandalous that governments in Canada don’t want to know the real numbers.
