A lady on the train this morning gave a fiver to a youngfella sitting across from her because he was in Dublin for the day with his granny, and I feel like it's the most Irish thing I've ever seen....
Some more hateful carry-on in our city last night. Let me say this - as a Waterford person, you don't speak for me. As a straight person, you don't speak for me. I stand with
#Pride
I won't share images of their poster. I'll share an image of
@WaterfordCounci
buildings instead.
You're not really supposed to say nice things about constituency colleagues/rivals, right?
But I've come to have great respect for
@MaryButlerTD
, for her work ethic, her commitment and her integrity. And not least, her bravery. Good on you, Mary.
Do we imagine we're far from a Jo Cox moment? We've pretended to ourselves that we're immune to this kind of dangerous polarisation in this country. We are not.
Am on opposite side of just about every issue from
@MHealyRae
, but this is just outrageous.
As a TD and a human being, MHR is 100% entitled to go about his business without being attacked by far right extremists who belong in jail.
Signed on the the Roll of the 33rd Dáil today. The Clerk of the Dáil then brought me back through previous rolls, all the way back to the 2nd Dáil, with names such as Collins, de Valera, Brugha.
An amazing privilege, one I don't take lightly.
If you're a young person in
#Waterford
, the train to Dublin now costs €7.20. The train to Limerick will cost you €5.27.
By any measure, I think that's pretty good value.
Will the voices who so mocked and vilified
@EamonRyan
for making the same suggestions about driving speed last week review their position now that the advice is coming from the IEA? I won't hold my breath.....
This is not safe cycling infrastructure. Unless you'd be willing to put your own child on it, you should go back to the drawing board. And now that it's built, it will be used as an excuse not to build better.
I'll be following this up.
Shiny new road surface for Cork airport Road (100kmph) including for the pre-existing cycle lanes (built at a time when this was considered safe 🙈). Almost a million € (2021-560k, 2022-400k) was allocated by NTA for this 'Sustainable transport measure'
So, I was in the chair last night for Sinn Féin PMB on Carbon Tax. It was notable for a number of reasons, not least that the opposition was split on the matter, but mainly for the amount of inaccuracies in the debate.
So before the inevitable social media outcry, some facts 1/n
So, a little personal disappointment is surely forgiveable, but glad to see a junior ministry in
#Waterford
for
@MaryButlerTD
and
@greenparty_ie
representation in the SE in
@noonan_malcolm
(a top man). For my part, I'll drive on representing the Déise to the best of my ability.
What they really mean is:
'Stuff planning, stuff the residents, stuff emissions - we want to be free to fly whenever we want, wherever we want in order to maximise shareholder profit.'
And nasty personalisation to boot. Classy.
Time to wake up
@EamonRyan
Forever asleep at the wheel… 😴
2022 - Asleep during security queues crisis
2023 - Asleep when drones closed Dublin Airport on 6 separate occasions
Now - Asleep once again when Dublin Airport capacity capped
Eamon,
@RTE_PrimeTime
is on!
I've been asked by a number of people, including
@Deisesupes
for the reasoning behind last night's vote on Nurse's Pay. Twitter isn't a great format for detail, but here goes.
So, deep breath.
I've been officially selected as the
@greenparty_ie
General Election candidate for
#Waterford
, whenever that may be.
I'll need every scrap of good luck, well wishes and hard graft. If you'd like to join me on the journey, give me a shout.
From small acorns..
Is it too much to ask that our streets should be safe enough for kids to walk to school without either adult supervision or funny clothes?
Or that we locate the responsibility for road safety with drivers rather than with our most vulnerable road users?
A wider cycle path is a safer cycle path.
And because their usage is increasing across the Netherlands,
@crow_nl
and
@FietsberaadNL
are now requiring a minimum width of 2.30 meters (7.55 feet), allowing for comfortable overtaking and side-by-side riding.
When’s the penny going to drop?
Cycling infrastructure is as cheap as infrastructure gets.
In fact, Dutch research shows that the combined health, congestion and productivity benefits *far* outweigh the build cost.
Cycling infrastructure pays for itself. Then it saves you €€
This is deliberate constitutional illiteracy. The party that paid for this content to appear in my timeline knows that the electorate appoint TDs, but do not directly elect a Taoiseach.
Regardless of your opinion of this government, this is straight-up misinformation.
🚄 Hourly services between cities (inc.

)
🚄 Reinstate Waterford-Rosslare
🚄 Improved connection to Galway and Cork thru Limerick
🚄 Increased line speeds (160-200 kmph)
🚄 Decreased track charges to encourage freight
🚄 Electric and Hydrogen trains
And much else!
The first All-Island Strategic Rail Review recommends faster speeds, improved frequency, and new rail routes for people and freight, particularly across the west and north of the country
Very disappointing news emanating from
@WaterfordCounci
this evening, where a majority of councillors voted to reject a Section 38 to improve pedestrian safety outside a primary school.
Against today's IPCC report, particularly jarring. We need political leaders, not followers.
Stopped at the highest-paved point in Waterford to look at the Comeraghs, a natural resource on our doorstep, where imaginative thinking and action could produce positive benefits in a number of areas.
Things you love to see - new rail track sitting ready to be lain, rock stabilisation measures done.
Roll on the construction of the new train station....

That was the longest job interview ever.
To everyone, thank you. For your time, your support, your vote. Tomorrow, the real work begins.
But for tonight, let's play to stereotype.

It is impossible to overstate how serious this is. These warning signs and last chances are coming much sooner than previously predicted, and we ignore at our collective peril.

First day using the Dublin bikes - big happy head on me. Great to have it linked to

Another very intense day of talks ahead, but working very well in our different groups.
Dairy is not the only farming solution that produces jobs - horticulture, particularly organic, is more labour intensive, less carbon intensive (can actually be carbon positive with good soil management) and increases our food security in the long term.

Well, that's my Sunday morning routine changed, as Brendan O'Connor seems to decide that Danny Healy Rae's comments on the Corona virus needs a sympathetic hearing.
After last week's suspension of human rights discussion....
Our uplands aren't picture postcard perfect.
Yesterday, the Dáil heard statements on the sheep sector. Many spoke to the economic challenges for those in the sector, few cited the ecological implications of a system pushing often degraded landscapes beyond sustainable limits.
I am proud to endorse this PfG. Fully implemented, it will be a radical and transformative change in how we live our lives, I believe for the better.

Hoping to see less of this in 2024!
Anyone who can remember before the plastic bag levy (and the roadside trees festooned with ragged plastic) knows the difference a small behavioural nudge can make.
Ireland isn't just D4 or the Connemara cottage - a huge number of us live in mid-sized towns, from Tramore to Trim. And I believe they have huge potential to help solve a range of issues, from housing to emissions to rural isolation 👇
Dear reader, for reference:
'One writer strongly urged Leo Varadkar to remind the Green Party that "they represent a minuscule (part) of the Irish electorate".'
One email. Of three dozen. But the headline - 'Public to Varadkar'.

The replies to this post, a straightforward if desperately sad story, are a good insight into how this site is becoming essentially non-functional. Conspiracy, ad hominem attack, anonymous bots in droves, the whole gamut.
At the other end of the world climate change and the loss of Ice sheets is leading to another ecological disaster. Every day now we seem to be hearing of devastating ecological breakdown.

A nice bit of positive news today, as €4.5m announced for Greenways across the country. Proposed extensions to

at both ends as well as the expansion of the

included in the funding package.
I have forms, I have envelopes.
If you know someone who has been laid off because of the

Yes. Yes we did.
Because we know that the most vulnerable in our community rely the most on public services.
Because we realise that local authorities are chronically underfunded.
Because we favour policy based politics over playing politics.
Happy to stand over the decision
The controlling pact of Sinn Fein, Labour, Green and Independents who now control
@WaterfordCounci
have just voted to increase the property tax on householders in Waterford by 2.5%. (Fine Gael & Fianna Fáil proposed and voted for a 5% cut).
When we budget in a siloed way, we get answers like 'cycling infrastructure is too expensive.'
When we budget big picture, across our society as a whole, we get different answers.
This is why I support moves to Wellbeing Budgeting. And, as it happens, cycling infrastructure.
The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

Just chatting with an 82 year old in the local butchers - missus passed away two years ago, sold the car, bought an e-bike and is in and out to Tramore (from Waterford) most days. Picking up a few bits for his great-grandchildren. An inspiration!
A bit of an aside, but evidence is growing that e-bikes really change how people travel. In rural Ireland, they could be a really powerful tool, but in many cases, traffic volumes make it uncomfortable or dangerous to cycle (I'm thinking Fenor to Tramore, for anyone local).
Approval has been given for community energy auctions - meaning that new community owned renewable energy is on the way! 🌍

Crazily unambitious. Bike share moving from 1% to 4%, car share staying close to 50%.
We can't accept this kind of incrementalism. We need deep, transformative change - this isn't it.
The NTA, in association with Cork City Council and Cork County Council, and in collaboration with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, has today published a Transport Strategy for the Cork Metropolitan Area.

The people setting these fires are, in a very real sense, burning our children's futures. We are in twin and interconnected crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss. Fires of this kind fan the flames of both.
Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage
Minister Noonan said: "Let's be clear. These fires do not occur naturally. They’re set deliberately, with no concern for the wide-ranging impacts on local people’s health and wellbeing, private property, tourism, emergency services, the defence forces and indeed the public purse"
I'm sickened listening to

report on beef exports to China. With all we know, in the wake of

last night, we still clap our flippers at an expansion opportunity. At what

So let's reconnect Rosslare to
#Waterford
, let bike tourists for
@WaterfordGrnWay
arrive by train. Sail, Rail and Trail: See the Greenway the Green Way - you heard it here first!
Bicycle tourism is a growing sector of the

Let's be straight, money talks. Sometimes it doesn't even need to talk out loud.
If large commercial revenue streams are derived from, for example, a car manufacturer, an airline or a dairy enterprise, does that affect editorial decisions on how stories are covered?
#RTEgate
I spoke in the Dáil today in relation to
#ClimateChange
.
If you were born after February 1985, you have never lived through a month of below average global temperatures?
The five warmest years since 1880 have occurred since 2015.
We no longer live in the world we think we do.
So while the headline message on this motion is simple and black and white, there's a great deal more to it. Everyone wants to do their best by student nurses, myself included, but this motion wasn't the way to do it.
Improvement of a Sail, Rail and Trail tourism offering is a commitment in the Programme for Government. I want tourists from the Continent and the UK to be able to arrive in Rosslare as foot passengers, jump on a train to
#Waterford
, and away they go - the Greenway the green way!
@dublincycling
@IrishTimes
I don't even know where to start with that article. I've been cycling as transport since I was 10. I cycled in college because I couldn't afford a car. Lazy stereotyping of GP, and bike theft as dog-whistle? I'm too cross.
Oh boy. More oil than anyone else, solid fuel use second only to Poland. Meanwhile, look at Sweden.
This isn't individual choice. This is policy. Retrofitting and district heating must be rolled out.
A nice measure for those with solar panels installed, with the disregard for those selling electricity back to the grid doubled from €200 to €400. Now, to get them on more rooves and to continue to support people in their installation! (0% VAT rating continues)
#Budget2024
Cathedral thinking, moonshot - whatever language we use, facing up to climate change is the challenge of our generation, and the legacy we leave the next. So let's build infrastructure that will still be relevant in 50 years, rather than stranded assets.
At times, the migration debate paints those arriving in Ireland with broad strokes, using various tags I won't repeat. But they're people, individuals, with their own histories and their own contributions to make. Having taught many kids from the DP system, I can't forget that.
@EddiePunch
Hmm. There's some truth to that, but it feels a bit like point-scoring, Eddie. Should beef farmers similarly list the provenance of their inputs? Fertilisers, soya-based feeds, etc?
We can feel a small voice in the European context at times. But today, the 11 votes of Irish MEPs, who all supported

Well done

Very positive news being broken by
