A fairy cursed you at birth, but with a very minor, very petty curse, that serves to make your life just a little bit worse. What was that curse? What always seems to go wrong for you in a tiny way? Me? Shops and brands always seem to discontinue the flavours of crisps I like.
If I see one more person equating reading comics with reading the back of a cereal packet/other worthless item I will flip over this table like moody Jesus. Comics are not a pathway to reading proper books. They are reading. They are proper books.
Will someone please pay me to write a children's book based on these rabbits? I don't have an idea yet but look at them! It's watership down meets game of thrones! Ok maybe that's the pitch. Whether it's a GOOD pitch is another matter.
Just thinking about why Gen X is the generation that goes under the radar. I think it's because we're all too traumatised by watching Watership Down to get involved in Discourse. Just sitting here, rocking quietly in a corner.
The audacity of saying women don't go for smear tests out of shame or "cultural issues" when the issue with smear tests is THEY HURT A LOT. (Not saying I don't go but it's not gonna be shame that would put me off, it would be PAIN)
THIS. I published 4 books before one took off. Could just as easily have been more! Getting a hit with your first book is SO rare. It's so easy to see the few exceptions - the instant debut hits - and feel like a failure if that's not you. But they ARE exceptions, not the norm.
At this time of year it can be overwhelming, and you may think you need to do everything at once, but you are never too old, too slow, or too late to write. There may be sprint stars tearing out of the gates, but give it long enough and the marathon runners will win

I'm going to glasgow then edinburgh in august and have 5 days spare in between. I'd love to go somewhere pretty in the meantime rather than go home. Any nice seasides/nature spots (that aren't midgey) either nearish glasgow or nearish edinburgh?
I'm gonna draw a diagram of MG genres to follow my age groups one. But first I need your help. What do YOU perceive the genres of MG to be? (No wrong answers, interested in a spread of views! Including joke answers :D )
You know how when a creative dies, people say how amazing they were? Well I'm resolving to tell all the creatives NOW. So I just wrote an email to a complete stranger telling them I love their work.
Would anyone that follows me be interested in spending some social media time in a space focussed on UK children's book networking & discussions? It would be on Discord, and have a code of conduct with human moderators. So, less of a "bag of poo on fire" vibe than twitter can be.
So, there's a publisher in spain and every time they have a meeting where they decide to publish a book, it's a surprise. Why? Because NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH ACQUISITIONS.
Guys I'm in shock. I've discovered that the majority of my team think the orange and strawberry creams are the best in a box of quality streets. I don't know how to feel.
Publishing involves so much waiting and sitting on things. I've had this under my hat for a VERY long time. Honestly, I think MI5 should recruit me immediately for my ability to keep a lid on this. OK, I don't have any other spy skills but still. Can't wait for '24

Since I started wearing glasses I am no longer surprised that Giles spent so long cleaning his glasses on Buffy. I am surprised he had time to do anything else.
I think what makes transphobes in publishing dangerous is that they GENUINELY believe they're the goodies. They believe they're fighting some kind of crusade. When all they're doing is being cruel to good people and tilting at windmills.

at my launch last night. Creative partner in all things. Loki would probably still be trapped in my brain without her. ❤
I'm delighted to reveal the cover for my third book about Kit the Wizard with art by

! Kit, Alita and Josh discover a new library, with a very special resident... but their world is about to get darker and much more dangerous.
Having a book out when the bookshops are shut and publicity tours aren't an option (except via zoom) is tough. Lockdowns favour big names over smaller or newer authors. But here are some amazing things you can do to help authors ride this out...
Thorsome news! Loki: A Bad God’s Guide to Being Good by
@LouieStowell
is the UK’s
#1
bestselling children’s book this week!
Loki is delighted that everyone is loving his laugh-out-loud diary, and furious that for some reason he has to share the credit with Louie…

I've drafted a diagram of diferent age groups for kids books+ their word counts, for writers. Pls argue with my word counts before I draw it up again to add in a few more bits I'd forgotten. People always ask about this stuff so I thought having a diagram might be useful!
Hey, are you an author with your debut coming out next year? Please enjoy some unsolicited advice from someone who's been through the debut milll (and beyond)...
Today, amid all this, I have a new book out. It's called The Wizard in the Wood and it's brilliantly illustrated by
@Ortu_Ilustrador
. Thanks to
@tombonnick
and the whole Nosy Crow team for taking raw words and turning them into a beautiful object. You rock xx
Today is LAUNCH DAY for Loki! Buffy would like to celebrate by showing off the sprayed edges...and making a vaguely disgusted face.

Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Taking the Blame is out TODAY! If you spot a copy, I'd love a pic! This is my 6th (fiction) book, but it's still astounding that something I wrote (and, in this case, drew) ends up in a shop!

What's the worst piece of jargon or abuse of language for business purposes you've ever heard at work? I'm inclining towards "learning" as a noun. "What learnings can we get from this?" NO. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED IS FINE.
My least favourite genre of tweet is the "I was X years old when I got my first break" tweet, invariably with an age like 35. Come back to me when you had your first big break at 60. Otherwise, you're not helping aspiring creators at all, you're just piling on pressure
