super excited to announce something that's been in the works for a little while -
@daveneubelt
and David Yee are joining me at Another Axiom to work on Gorilla Tag. ridiculously excited. more details are at
wow Gorilla Tag hit 100k ratings on quest :0 pretty sure it's the first game to do so. congrats to everyone on the team for working so hard to keep the insane momentum going!
gorilla tag has passed beat saber and is now the
#1
most rated game on the quest store! wowee. here's a gorilla celebrating with a party hat and a sparkler
the gorilla tag servers should be going back up now, i wrote this post in our discord about an hour after the
#weareVR
event started. thank you again to everyone who showed up, and we'll do our best to make sure that we can handle this kind of thing better in the future
wow, gorilla tag peaked at over 90k concurrent users yesterday :0 that's about 20k higher than our previous ccu record. awesome to see the game keep growing like this
happy one year Gorilla Tag anniversary!!! i didn't dream the game would've been played by and impacted so many people, thanks so much to everyone who's shared and played and ran around and screamed "monke"
gorilla tag hit 1.5 million players today, and in game purchases are available on quest! to celebrate, here's a gorilla wearing a party hat, but it looks better than last time
squeaking in right at the finish line, Gorilla Tag hit 2 million total players as of today! this year has been totally unbelievable, thanks so much to everyone who's checked the game out.
It’s Gorilla Tag’s 3rd birthday and we’ve got party favors!
We’re so excited to announce our FIRST EVER official Gorilla Tag Monke plush. After three years of virtual tag, our adorable primate has swung their way out of your headset and into the real world.
Happy Halloween! A new patch has just dropped for Gorilla Tag with a flash back sale of last years cosmetics. Update the game and head over to the city to get them before they're gone!
#gorillatag
oh my god, the gorilal is so scary for halloween. spooky. where did the pumpkin come from. he will bite you. new cosmetics for spooky month in gorilla tag.
original, original caves are back in gorilla tag for a bit. this is from when you had to be in the discord downloading builds manually to your quest 1, and everyone was a robot. fun to take a look back almost 4 (!!) years and see how much things have changed
gorilla tag, only on app labs, has gotten 2,638 reviews in the same time period this article is looking at, more than double the top free game on the store, vrchat, which got 1,277👀
@benz145
disable artificial turning and turn in real life. artificial turning should only be used if there's some kind of irl reason you can't turn irl
Greg Abbot has officially directed Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers.
He has also instructed all teachers, doctors, and caregivers to begin reporting any trans students they see.
finally putting gorilla tag up on steam! releases in two weeks, on February 12. if you guys could wishlist it and play it when it comes out, i think that would be extremely cool. it'll be up on sidequest as well
added fireballs to gorilla tag, i was worried it might feel kind of overwhelming to move and throw with your arms at the same time but it feels pretty great

#OculusQuest
gorilla tag servers are down right now!! you aren't banned but the game is affected by the playfab outages here hopefully they are resolved soon sorry for the trouble!!
I'm so excited for all the great new players that the Echo Arena Quest port is gonna bring, you can ball just as hard as you can on a Rift

@benz145
an rpg that understands the underlying systems (xp, levels, etc) are supposed to reflect levels of mastery in skills and tasks that need to be abstracted for tabletop + flatscreen games, but don't need to be for vr
@StyledSnail
it was gonna smash 100k, if i had to guess based on some back of the napkin numbers, i think it would have made it to at least 130k concurrents which is absolutely mindblowing
@AntonHand
tbh i released it for free back in feb 2021 on steam+sidequest because i knew it was really fun and i just wanted as many people to play it as possible. there was zero monetization at the start. it was a passion project and later success reflected that it was just good, imo
@AntonHand
i really appreciate that. one thing i hope we can do is to set the standard for f2p on the platform to be as non-exploitative as possible (no loot boxes, get currency by playing, not exploit fomo by not permanently gating cosmetics, etc). but it's hard and complicated
@DennyCloudhead
@Tuism
@triqona
@nimSony
I think "need" is a strong word here, or at least more movements can be tolerated by the inputs than you assume they might. I didn't do any experiments with a two handed attack, but one handed fireballs mixed with hand based movement already works pretty great
@miziziziz
i dunno if you're having it played with one hand or not but if you do have an extra hand maybe you could have it represent your body somehow and need to like squeeze your own heart to make it beat or something
experimenting with some camera angles. i feel like a big weakness in vr is being unable to translate the relevant input the player is using (positional hand tracking) to a viewer in a video. i think alternative camera/spectator views are key for that (fpv is awful)
@purplemikey
for what it's worth - this wasn't our event, it was the community's. we tried to support it as best we could, and we've figured out some things we can do better next time, but getting everyone together was all them, we can't take any credit for that
@AzurePlayFab
users can no longer log in to my game and i can't ping any of the endpoints, but isn't showing issues. other people showing problems on the playfab forums, is anyone investigating this?
@jasminezroberts
@Scobleizer
@VRwithJasmine
some of these assumptions are a little unfair, i know i can do better, but there's about 120k daily players and it's just me handling it. i spend about 2-3 hours every day reviewing in game reports and banning people, and i'm still working on tools to improve the system
@AntonHand
this is why i'm such a big fan of the walkabout style where you put in the room id, and then everyone can just join it. it allows the destination to be a place everyone can get to independently, without needing to hook into a meta-system beyond the game
@AntonHand
i tried really hard to give red dead 2 a fair shake, but i realized that for all the effort they put into making a beautiful world, any time i was going anywhere i was just looking at the minimap and following the yellow line and i couldn't take it
@AntonHand
yeah, it's mostly my vain hope lol
and also just wanted to say how much i admire you having done the indie vr thing first, especially during a much harder period. it's always hard to imagine something can be done until you see someone else do it
