Since 2021, I've been laser-focused on building my consulting agency. But along the way my identity became intertwined with my business and that's not who I am. Honestly, I cannot wait to reintroduce you all to the person I've become.
Thinking about how Zoom put my best friend through an 8 round interview process just to tell her she didn't get the job. No company should ever do that.
I'll never forget Michelle Obama saying we need to "plan our joy" in an interview with Oprah. I'm so intentional about planning dates with friends, self care appointments, fitness classes, and trips now. I always have something to look forward to. Keeps me excited about life.
Setting goals isn't always about hitting the goal, it's about becoming the person you need to in order to actually hit that goal.
I'm learning this now.
{THREAD} How to secure your spot in next round interviews by asking these 9 questions, with reasons.
1) In your opinion, what are the top 3 skills necessary to do well in this role & why?
*This helps you tailor your answers & demonstrate those skills to each interviewer*...1/
Rihanna has figured out what am I just now realizing after 4 years of being in business.
You don't have to stay married to the one talent/idea/business that gave you your platform. It is okay to try new ideas, launch new businesses and enter into a completely new market.
I can't believe we were taught to just be grateful to have a job, keep your head down, work hard and your company will "notice" your hard work and reward you for it.
Uncles don’t get enough credit for how important they can be for girls who have inconsistent, disengaged, or emotionally unavailable fathers, and need more male role models. Shoutout to the uncles out there, y’all are appreciated.
I hate seeing folks so down about their career. Your career is a journey, it ebbs & flows, it speeds up, it slows down. You may take one step back to take two steps forward.
It really isn't as linear as we've been socialized and groomed to believe it is.
There's an interview of Michelle Obama saying we have to plan our joy. We plan everything else. Our business, our careers, our meals.
But we don't plan our joy. That has to change. Make space for it in 2021. We have to.
This is your reminder that you don't need to go on a big vacation to book PTO. You may need to book PTO to rest, sleep, think, watch tv, journal and turn your brain OFF.
Issa Rae launching her own Proseco is so on brand. I've watched so many interviews where she talks about how much she loves Proseco.
Talk about operating in your zone of genius and authenticity. Goals.
I can't say this enough, but companies are pulling millions of dollars out of thin air to donate to organizations, yet there are significant pay inequities internally & not enough advancement opportunities for Black employees. This needs to be addressed ASAP.
So let's talk about this. The 40 hour work week was popularized by Henry Ford in the early 1900s?
This is 2020. So you mean to tell me that with all this technology, we're still working the same or more?
The math ain't mathing for me.
I didn't realize the tweet would be so triggering, I'm sorry to anyone who has or is dealing with interview burnout.
So here's my shameless plug for my Career Coaching Community

Black women are over mentored and under sponsored.
We need to be seen by people in the organization that have leverage and access.
Not just given a mentor.
Starting a new career doesn’t mean you have to start from scratch. You have transferable skills that allow you to adapt, like problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and relationship building.
Take your PTO! It may feel dumb to take PTO just to sit in the house but I promise you, your brain needs that break.
Working 5 days straight then only 2 days off is really a scam IMO lol.
Y'all remember my client that had 50 million interviews at Google?
Well.. it's official! She GOT THE JOB AT GOOGLE! $54K+ SALARY INCREASE.
Yep, read it again. Not a $54K salary, but an increase. Ain't God good?
A Charlotte woman left her job to start her own business where she could make a difference. Now, she teaches diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. More >>>
Apply to the job even if you don’t meet every qualification. Studies show women apply if they meet 10/10 requirements whereas men apply if they meet 6/10.
Imposter syndrome is real but your ambition is realer. Stop counting yourself out of blessings that have your name on it.
I cannot stress this enough. Ask for more.
More money. More PTO. More professional development. More benefits. More visibility in the company. Ask for it all.
What does it look like for everyone asking. I just add it to the end in red, “Upcoming PTO: April 10-19.”
That’s really it. I’ll add it about 3-4 weeks in advance.
When I worked in recruiting, one of my colleagues noticed all the Black interns sitting together at a table & asked me "Why do they only sit with each other & not anyone else?"
Me: "Do you ask the same question when you see a group of white interns only sitting together?"
HOW TO NEGOTIATE YOUR SALARY FROM START TO FINISH (A THREAD)
#30DaysofThreads
Did you know, 84% of companies EXPECT you to negotiate? **Yahoo Finance***
Here's my formula...
Step 1: DETERMINE YOUR NEEDS
WHAT DO YOU DESIRE TO LIVE THE LIFESTYLE THAT YOU WANT?
Interview Tip: Remove the phrase "helped with" when speaking on your experience. Saying that actually takes away from the responsibility that you actually did.
So instead of saying "helped", think about how you helped? And replace that with a better verb.
Please congratulate your people when they land the interview and not wait to congratulate them once they actually get the job.
That’s a big deal as well.
I just want all Black women to feel validated in their emotions when they know they're being mistreated and that it's not okay and shouldn't be dismissed or rejected.
The 3 main ways I've improved my life:
1) Being mindful to what I put in my body (food, vitamins, hydration)
2) Being mindful to what I put ON my body (skincare, bodycare, perfume)
3) Creating systems to reduce decision fatigue and improve life experience (am/pm routines)
Just a reminder that your current job should be a vehicle to accomplishing your future career goals. Your current job is not the end all, be all, but a step in your evolution and journey.

One of my former coaching clients told me she'd be my biggest success story. She recently landed a new role this year paying a $475,000 salary.

Make it a goal to create more than you consume this week. Less time on social, more time in the present. Or change what you’re consuming. A book, a podcast vs doom scrolling.
My manager told me I had an attitude one time. I asked for specific examples.
Guess what? He couldn't give me ONE. Checked his bias at the door. The thing is, we (black women) express ourselves differently. Misinterpretation shouldn't result in negative feedback.
I really created a Career Journal for Women during the pandemic and sold hundreds of copies shipped to all over the world and well? I love that for me and all the women who bought one 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾
If you like your job, focus on developing relationships w/ your boss & coworkers in 2020. Hate to break it to you, relationships at work DO matter.
Quality of your work is important, but quality of relationships matter more. Don't ever think you get ahead on your work alone.
Start planning for your week on Sundays. Plan your outfits, plan your meals, review your calendar. One less decision you have to make during the week, the better.
We make enough decisions each day, how can you make this upcoming week easier for you?
Guess who just paid down her Chase credit card debt in full today! I got one more card to go and then I'll be credit card debt free. Who is turning up with me?
When you start a new job, the first thing you need is an org chart. Learn names, roles, and how you can support them and vice versa.
Building your internal network starts day ONE!
One day I'll talk about how I applied for TedX Charlotte, made it to the audition round (out of 300+ applicants) and was then told that my topic wasn't palatable for their white audience.
And yes, my topic was on racial inequities in Corporate America.
Let’s be honest, the bar for Black Women is set extremely high in the workplace.
We put high expectations on ourselves because we aren’t allowed to make the same mistakes and we know it.
My grandma's friend is in her mid 80s and taking a computer course so she can make her own church program. 🥰🥺It really is never too late to learn a new skill.
Listen, if you work from home every day, something that I recently did was buy some comfy, cute lounge sets in every color so now I have a “work uniform”! No throwing on random clothes just because I’m sitting in the house and not wasting my outside clothes 😂
I am sooo excited to announce that I officially joined the Google Digital Coaches team! It’s a DREAM to work with a company like Google!
Our goal is to help Black & Latinx entrepreneurs grow businesses w/ digital tools. Join me for the launch event!
The last time I negotiated my salary, I actually did say that I know Black women are severely underpaid in corporate and I want to ensure my salary reflects my value.
It worked for me.
