I knew Texas high school football was a different breed but practicing at midnight — the literal first minute they’re allowed to — was not something I was prepared for.
They really are built different here.
ESPN Vice President of Production Pat Lowry announces that in addition to the women’s national championship game being on ABC for the first time, so will the hour-long pregame show.
ESPN hopes this will attract more fans and viewers to the event.
Some news: I’m moving to Texas!
Thrilled to announce that after graduating from Northwestern in June, I’ll be joining
@dallasnews
full-time as a high school sports reporter. I can’t wait to begin my career by experiencing the Friday Night Lights I missed out on in high school.
Tyler Seguin also had this to say this morning. Some food for thought:
“Sometimes when you get booed, it gets you going. I didn’t really enjoy our fans booing Mark Stone. That gets you going. When I used to get booed in Winnipeg for whatever reason, I would have my best nights.”
Jamie Benn is on a career-long, six-game scoring streak.
The Stars are on a season-long, six-game winning streak.
Dallas is the No. 1 team in the West and No. 2 team in the NHL.
Playoff hockey is returning to the American Airlines Center.
What a time to be alive.
Some news: I’m taking on a new beat at The Dallas Morning News this fall.
Excited to share that I’ll be covering the Dallas Stars this season!
Covering the Stars in the WCF last year was a blast. I’m grateful for the opportunity to dive into the beat even more this season.
Wyatt Johnston said he’s been trying to help out around the Pavelski house.
He cooked dinner last night and made steaks, crabs, potatoes and green beans.
Breakfast is apparently his specialty, though.
When Jasmine Thomas began her WNBA career in 2011, she finally reached her dream job. Little did she know, she’d find her dream girl there, too.

You mean to tell me this many people traveled five hours for high school football?
I don’t think this many people watch high school football on the entire east coast of this country.
It’s official! Nigel Smith II — the most heavily recruited player in Melissa history and No. 6 recruit in the Dallas area — is headed to Oklahoma.

NU students are protesting the Northwestern Police Department on the field. Now an Iowa fan is running on the field trying to rip the banners. Crazy stuff at Ryan Field.
The Stars are exploring a free, direct-to-consumer option that would make them pioneers in the sports streaming space.
I spoke with president and CEO Brad Alberts about an app they're developing that could replace Bally Sports.
@MikeHeika
had it first.
Final: Plano East 53, Round Rock Stony Point 41
For the first time in program history, Plano East is a state champion.
At 40-0, it joins Duncanville and Lincoln as the only other Dallas-area teams to become undefeated champions.
Mexico City is on a shortlist of cities where the NHL hopes to play. The Dallas Stars want to be there.
The organization has already taken steps toward growing its Hispanic fan base, but what will it take to become Mexico’s team?
Beyond excited to share that I’ll be interning with

this winter!
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to make this lifelong dream come true while learning from some of the best in the business.
I have covered games at six Big Ten stadiums and five professional stadiums, but I can definitively say the press box experience (food, ambiance, all of the above) at this high school in Rockwall, Texas blows all of those out of the water.
(they have salted caramel churros 🤯)
Matt Duchene is working with Logan Stankoven before practice today.
The rookie couldn’t ask for a better cast of veteran players to learn from in the first few months of his NHL career.
That’s a wrap on my first season covering TXHSFB ✌🏼
16 weeks. 23 games. 2,827 miles. And a whole lot of tweeting.
Thanks to all who followed along.
I see why y’all like this so much. How many days til August?
Really struggling with this NU AD hire. There are so many qualified people at this school and in college sports who weren’t implicated in two scandals and didn’t deliberately ignore students’ concerns or accuse them of fabricating evidence. I expected better.
The NHL announced the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs will begin Sunday.
That means the Stars-Golden Knights first-round series could still be going on when the second round begins for some Eastern Conference teams.
The No. 1 takeaway from this mess is student journalism is so important.
Without a doubt, this would’ve been brushed under the rug if it weren’t for the dedicated reporting of
@thedailynu
.
Hire them.

This felt inevitable, but given Northwestern’s track record, still feels surprising.
Now the questions is: who’s next?
Northwestern’s football program, and athletic department, clearly need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
And there’s just 55 days until Week 1 of CFB season…
Jason Robertson said this will be a memorable team photo day not because of how special this team is, but because he has a red mark on his forehead after his helmet was ripped off during last night’s game. 😂
Pete DeBoer said Miro Heiskanen’s 10-minute misconduct was because he threw his glove and it bounced off his stick and over the glass. Any equipment into the crowd is an automatic 10 minutes.
“It was more like a Mavericks bounce pass,” DeBoer joked.
Tyler Seguin likened the Stars-Golden Knights matchup to the Capitals and Penguins. He said just like Washington did in 2018, the Stars are going to have to find a way to finally beat Vegas to win a Stanley Cup.
“This is our team that we’ve got to find a way to overcome.”
Would just like to point out that of the 141 people who signed this, only two are current female student-athletes.
There are 257 female student-athletes at Northwestern...
A long list of the prestigious athletes, alumni and executives at Northwestern have written a letter to the Board of Trustees in support of their new athletic director Mike Polisky.
Disclosure: I have signed the letter.
Jake Oettinger on the emotions being down 3-0:
“You feel like you want to cry. You put your whole season into this.”
“I’m never gonna give up. I’m never gonna stop believing in myself.”
The Stars got exactly what they needed with giving up the bare minimum. Logan Stankoven, Mavrik Bourque and Lian Bichsel stay put. So does every player on the roster and every first-round pick.
Plus, New Jersey retains half of Tanev's salary.
Wow. Just wow.
Final: Stars 5, Oilers 0
In a stunning performance, the Stars set a franchise record for the longest win streak at eight games.
Dallas also snapped Connor McDavid's eight-game point streak.
Can't ask for much better than that.
Joe Pavelski with a true veteran quote after the loss:
“This might come at a good time. This is a great reminder of what’s ahead of us. We’re going to be in this situation again against good teams in the playoffs. You’re up by two, you’re down by one and the game can’t change.”
Miro Heiskanen and Roope Hintz were in the stands for an NHL game in Helsinki, Finland the same weekend in 2009.
They were just 10 and 12 years old.
Fifteen years later, they will return to their home country together to play two games this fall.

Not surprised at all by this. When I got to chat with Mike Tomlin this summer for a story I was writing, he spent five minutes with me after the interview to discuss my career aspirations in journalism and thanked us young journalists for keeping the profession going. Class act.
The Dallas Stars are officially in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs.
They are the first Western Conference team to clinch and pass the 100-point mark this year.
The NCAA once moved seven championships due a trans bathroom bill. It vowed to address gender inequity in all sports.
But this year's Final Fours are in Texas — a state with abortion and trans athlete bans.
What changed? My deep dive for

:
Final: Stars 3, Golden Knights 2
For the first time this playoffs, Dallas holds the series lead.
One more win, and the Stars are going to the second round.
See you back in Vegas Friday.
Final | No. 11 Trophy Club Byron Nelson 34, No. 6 Southlake Carroll 17
Field storm!
For the first time in program history, Byron Nelson is a district champion. And for the first time in 38 district games, Carroll comes out on the wrong side.
With goals from Evgenii Dadonov and Ty Dellandrea, Vegas is finally getting a taste of Dallas' depth scoring.
It's dangerous, and we haven't seen much of it yet this series.
Final: Stars 4, Golden Knights 2
Series: evened.
Dallas takes care of business on the road and comes away with two much-needed wins.
We have a new series returning to Dallas for Game 5 on Wednesday.
So, so honored to be named the winner of this year's APSE Student Contest! Thank you so much to
@APSE_sportmedia
and all the judges for this amazing honor!
Congrats to the rest of the top 10 as well 🥳
Pete DeBoer had some thoughts on the Wild and their penalties postgame:
“It seems like the same story every time we’re in here.”
“Maybe this was what we needed: a team that took a bunch of stupid penalties, so we could work on [the power play].”
Final: Stars 3, Kraken 1
For the first time since the 2015-16 season, the Dallas Stars are champions of the Central Division.
They are the first team in the NHL to clinch a division title this season.
Dallas will have home ice advantage at least through the first two rounds.
With the AD opening, Northwestern had the chance to turn a corner away from a tumultuous time when its leadership was repeatedly questioned. Instead, it chose to turn a blind eye to Mike Polisky’s controversial history at the school.
For
@insidenu
:
In an interesting turn of events, LA loses 3-1 to Minnesota.
That means if Dallas wins Wednesday and Vegas wins its last two against Chicago and Anaheim, the Stars will face the Kings in the first round (Nashville holds the tiebreaker over LA).
Chaos!
NEW: Northwestern plans to tear down Ryan Field and build a modern, smaller-capacity stadium on the site. The $800M project would be privately-funded and set up the venue to host concerts, among other non-football events.
As the No. 1 player in Texas, picking a college is a big decision.
But for Colin Simmons that choice became even more important when his family wanted to find better resources for his brother Clayton who has autism.
More on their bond and his road to UT:
Pete DeBoer said Mason Marchment and Radek Faksa are game-time decisions.
He said he has no problem putting Mavrik Bourque in but wants to temper expectations that he isn’t here to “save the season.”
NEWS: First Lady Jill Biden will make an appearance at the women's national championship game in Dallas between Iowa and LSU on Sunday, her press secretary told
@SportsDayDFW
.
It will be her first women's Final Four appearance since 2010.
Northwestern students and faculty are gathering on campus to protest the promotion of Mike Polisky to athletic director. They will make their way to President Morton Schapiro’s house shortly.

Hello from Toyota Stadium where FC Dallas will face Inter Miami in the Round of 16 of the Leagues Cup.
Lots of fans are lining up 90 mins before the gates open to see Lionel Messi at his first road game since beginning his U.S. career.
