holy shit we made it folks; this is huge 😭
thank you SO much to everyone who has pledged, shared and been involved 🙏
this is genuinely so important for indie left media 🦾
If people (the NZ National Party) are going to use AI to generate electioneering ads they should be required to both declare that, and what prompts they're using... like what and why did they prompt here?
Lmao everyone called it but here we go! Western media chose not to livestream South Africa's application and then livestreaming Israel's defense. So utterly barefaced and zero reason beyond bias.
Absolutely incredible and deranged line from Luxon here. I genuinely can't believe this came out of his mouth. Six months and he's absolutely *cracking* under the pressure.
Chris Luxon: "You think you've got it tough, I'm the one who has to cut thousands of jobs & kick people off benefits and evict people from public housing. No one's doing it tougher than me."
sorry to all our "serious" political commentators but this is some egregious & obscene shit ACT are running this as a core policy plank on their billboards
don't talk to me about 'not getting sucked in by the culture war' when a 10%+ party is banking bigotry without challenge
oh, for an iota of critique aimed at cost of living payments to be applied to corporates who took covid relief payments they didn't need, posted a profit, paid out shareholders, never returned it because "they didn't have to", then began price-gouging during an inflation crisis
Are people gonna start covering this guy more critically when it comes to the way he grifts off mental health instead of uncritically championing him as some kind of hero?
King is about to get 6mil from government & comes out with this. Quelle surprise.
Who else thinks that Stuff is doing future generations a disservice by *leading this story with Seymour's vomit* instead of framing it around the young people who are striking for the future of the planet?
What an absurd, groveling choice.
This is one of the nastiest government's we've ever had.
No cause evictions are gutter politics, and anyone buying their bs trying to reframe it as "pro tenant" should be ashamed.
This is almost $50million more than was being cut from school lunches, so spare me anyone talking about "savings".
This government is running purely on ideology. There is no other reason to funnel public money to private interests when you could just fund public services better.
When Key was PM it was his antics that drew embarrassment and ridicule in international coverage while our media fawned over him.
Ardern, in contrast, is lauded overseas and it's NZ media's backward approach to her that is now making international headlines.
It's actually incredibly sickening that coverage of a *slogan* is in the top spot of nearly every major NZ media outlet when there hasn't been a *single* article about genocide hitting the front page of these websites for the last 4 weeks. What the *fuck* is wrong with you all??
*Retrospective* tax cuts for landlords would probably be the most outright theft from the public purse that I've ever seen; you expect to see public funds funneled to the private sector under neoliberalism but this is out the gate.
This guy literally used his mercenary background to PR himself as some kind of "tough guy" so that he could run hard on crime lines. Cry me a fucking river that people are calling him out on it and he want's to be an oh so bullied victim.
Anyone remember how Kiri Allan was hounded for weeks and weeks because of non-confirmed leaks to the press about yelling?
Wondering very much if we'll get that same level of follow-through on van de Molen given his behaviour was physically threatening, evidenced and censured.
In a significant sign of just how bad things have gotten on the rightwing of our politics, absolutely zero politicians from National or ACT have offered condolences or solidarity to Davidson after she was assaulted
Compare to even last election when Bridges et al did so for Shaw
If Greens significantly increase their vote, as looks likely, then its going to be in large part because they've been more unapologetically left-wing with clear articulation of policy to address inequality. We've been saying they should do this for years. Hope they understand now
There's enough expertise about Te Tiriti that there's no excuse for media outlets consistently publishing David Seymour's garbage takes verbatim with zero critique. This isn't a "both sides" issue. Only conclusion is that there are people in media who WANT this attack on Māori.
Stuff columnist just publishing outright genocide denial at this point. We know these folks are apologists, and many have been platformed over the last few months despite that, but this... are you comfortable with Grant on your books
@NZStuff
? Utterly horrific.
Luxon's "garage" comment should absolutely rule him out of being anywhere near levers of power. But due to media's strict "horserace" coverage rules &, in no small part, class solidarity, there has been nothing LIKE the follow-up there should've. He should be *hounded* for this.
embarrassing that the gallery threw the "price of butter" question at Hipkins and *when he answered correctly* THEY GOT SHITTY ABOUT IT:
"you were *obviously* expecting that question"
the gallery needs to get so much better if it's to serve the people of NZ
Current political spectrum on AKL floods:
Far left: govt isn't doing enough; Wayne Brown should resign; neoliberalism has destroyed public infrastructure, we need a Ministry of Works to fix it
Far right: there's a conspiracy to frame Brown and they are controlling the weather
This is one of the clearest free speech cases NZ has ever seen. Attacks on free speech are about state power being used against the public to stop them speaking out. This is more the case here than ANY bad faith examples ACT has supported over the decades
Tax policy reporting
Greens: Basically ignored, minimal media coverage
Labour: Wall to wall economists saying it wouldn't work as intended
National: "voters will like this" coverage with almost zero critique
🤔🤔🤔
If politicians lie to the electorate then public servants have a moral duty to leak evidence of that. The fact that this person has, presumably, been fired and Costello retains her role is an embarrassment to any claim that we're a democracy
If Swarbrick runs for coleader and gets it (as she probably should) then I think we'll see a new level of abuse that we probably haven't seen before in NZ politics - and yes that is taking into account the outrageous attacks on many other MPs - due to her wider popularity.
god, the pathetic framing of government ministers as *victims* at Waitangi is actually disgraceful from our media. They're very powerful people, folks. I think they can manage some criticism given their assault on society.
Chris Bishop should've been kicked out of public life the moment he showed the *immensely* poor judgement of Snapchatting with teen girls- but our media were more interested in being pals with him than destroying his career as was warranted
Now we've got a situation like this 🤷♀️
Let's be very clear ACT *wanted* to remove food in schools, was forced to do otherwise by public outcry, & is now intentionally setting it up to fail in a way that can potentially funnel money to their mates
This is going to end up costing much more than the original service
People who still believed there could be serious engagement "across the aisle" between centre left & right political leadership should treat this as a huge wake-up call
The entire right-wing rallied around Wayne Brown. This should make very clear what their values & intents are
Cop in the below video has serious anger control issues & probably put the entire cohort at risk over someone asking for their flag back; using physical force and then pepper spray against a peaceful protest. You can see the other policemen in the line not getting involved.
Looks like almost zero NZ media outlets are covering the multiple Gaza solidarity events around the country again. What the fuck is even the point of these cowards?
This should be utterly embarrassing to everyone in the industry, but especially whoever let this get published after we got video of Soper shitting himself live at the press conference today
Let's stop focusing on "bottom-feeding" like
@chrisluxonmp
has suggested & start "top-eating" instead.
The top 1% have got away far too long with obscene profit levels and hoarding. Time to take that back for the communities and individuals broken from doing the work.
Really feel like Labour/Greens are going to get rolled over if they dont present urgent solutions to the cost of living crisis
it's been an obvious outcome since at *least* last election. Labour still have an outright majority, it may be their last chance to do something with it
All of you in media doing okay? You enjoying headlines like this increasingly being used to misrepresent facts to your audience? How much worse does it have to get?
Media: screaming to open up, absolutely frothing, weeping and crying to the government to give up
Government: begins to give up
Media: bad form, oh I can't believe this, shouldn't do it, no, no... but we did say this would happen
This is fucking insane and Shane Jones should never be allowed back into parliament. Utterly, utterly corrupt and the fact he wasn't run out of town by media and other politicians speaks deeply to how rotten our pol/media class is.
Instead of doing a walkback, or doubling down, looks like National are planning to get *really* gross with their messaging instead and go after Labour and their family members??
This is insanity. This group, the IINZ, are extremists. No one involved with them should be anywhere near our politics or media, yet they are consistently referred to and platformed by both. What a *sick* group of people, hell-bent on spreading hate and outright lies.
It's pretty sick and disgusting that multiple media outlets are manipulating a tragedy into a direct political attack on the PM
One of the clearer examples of bias we've seen in a while, and very obviously implemented directly via political operatives, while utterly incoherent
I'll say it again, this is coordinated at an international scale with far right groups. Media buying into it are complicit in an assault on NZ democracy. Other commentators, like Smalley today, are actively creating the environment here. Look at how hard that switch was flipped.
Media consistently framing austerity cuts as "savings" is one of the major reasons we are at this point in history, and they should just stop doing it if they want to be taken seriously
Seymour is going to fucking snap because he's been playing on easy mode for a decade, has never been tested or pressured in any significant way and is clearly a shallow, nasty hack with little intellectual heft or resilience
I reckon Chris Bishop should publicly challenge his own party leader about pro-choice and right to healthcare if he's so convinced of the importance of debate
I don't care what the reviews under this government say, there's more than enough evidence that the books are being cooked and having a media that breathlessly tows an austerity line is a breach of the social contract as far as I'm concerned
Hi
@radionz
incredibly bizarre claim in your article that is openly refuted by your own source material.
It was very clear *on the night* that Luxon only called for a SoE *after* it had already happened. Very odd to re-write the timeline like that.
Seeing billboards now and Paula Bennett being one of NZ's most damaging modern politicians and being rehabilitated by the media establishment tells you everything you need to know about both
Heads up that rightwing networks are already name-searching Swarbrick & getting nasty & abusive. Some pretty clear patterns over what they'll go after her for. They have no red lines at all- & be clear, they're directed by rightwing politicians & astroturfs, its not organic.
Keep a close eye on the companies chosen to supply and distribute food under ACT's "new model" - because this is exactly the kind of rort that the UK tories use to funnel money to their mates - and then the service fails on top of that
Remember National campaigned on removal of the VERY popular free prescriptions with the justification of cancer treatments. Alongside rule changes that force cancer patients to look for work, one of the nastiest political "footballs" I've seen employed.
Reason its always we "must have cuts" (to an already struggling system) & not "we must tax the rich" or "take on debt" is because Coughlan et al are actively manufacturing consent for "There Is No Alternative" narratives to help privatise the health system. Theyre not on our side
There's "no doubt" New Zealanders are not taking Omicron seriously, Auckland epidemiologist Rod Jackson says, adding that in the US, it has killed more people than the Delta variant.
Huge congratulations and kudos to
@_chloeswarbrick
for the journey that brought her to this point
I saw her speak at the rally yesterday and she was fantastic. I'm excited to see that leadership brought to bear on the myriad of challenges facing Aotearoa
Anyone in our wonderful media want to cover the fact that Seymour is using the term "subhuman" while also screaming that he wants to abolish the Human Rights Commission among other equity organisations?
The context and framework of his rhetoric *matters*, stop ignoring it.
David Seymour is looking absolutely *shook* about ACT being linked to racism and extreme views. His back-to-back questions in the house suggest he *knows* this is a weak point for his base, because ACT has benefited from liberals moving over from National. He's cracking, folks.
There's no good business case for this, data to support it, or risk analysis. He just wants to see people lose their jobs. He's getting off on it.
What an incredibly nasty piece of work.
Hi everyone, what do you think is happening here?
This government is preparing the public service for a level of cost-cutting and privatisation that we haven't seen since the 80s. There is almost no other conclusion to reach at this point.
People need to start getting serious.
ACT should have used their higher than usual number of MPs to work more closely with Labour to actually achieve something. But because they'll only work with National it means they have no leverage. This is why voters are turning away from them.
This is beyond disinfo, just the most outrageous claim by the RNZ reporter. Who the *fuck* wrote their lines and approved this? The case is ongoing, no deliberation on "guilt" or otherwise has been made, and the interim order *outright states* that the SA claim is plausible!
Radio New Zealand News
Misrepresents the ICJ finding on Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza - at 0.38 into this bulletin it says the ICJ found Israel NOT guilty of genocide. That's not at all what the ICJ said - thoughts,
@KyleDChurch
?
James Shaw: "Right now there is enough money in untaxed wealth to lift every person out of poverty"
this is the reality of the situation here, and it's fantastic that we have a party laying their policy platform on it
Insane to me that David Seymour can be so toxic, misleading & *absent* on the cyclone response then fly down to Christchurch & immediately get a raft of good press that doesn't mention any of that *while* the crisis is ongoing
He should be hammered for his lack of leadership
lmaooooo less than a week in 💀💀
ironic that the failure of NZ media to interrogate right-wing politics has landed them in the firing line; of course it was very obvious that would happen.
So, now the election is over do we get to find out the identity of the "high profile political figure" who apparently received name suppression mostly on the grounds that it would affect the election campaign?
Does no one in NZ media find it *weird* that both Bridges and Bennett have been given podcast platforms (alongside other media slots) straight off the back of leading NZ's largest rightwing party? Do people in those organisations not ache from the constant whiplash?
Don't think we've had a PM in my lifetime with even close to the recall that Ardern has, even with briefing that's not easy and it's a major factor in her ability to do the comms thing everyone raves about
Hey team, when a politician uses this rhetoric then "just reporting" it is far from enough. It becomes an outright fuck-up. Peters invokes nazism in bad faith against co-governance, then turns round & uses fascistic, othering language about immigrants. Please do your goddamn job.
And don't @ me with "But they shouldn't have trashed the place then".
I've had personal experience of landlords completely misrepresenting what "fair wear and tear" and "reasonably clean and tidy" is, and attempting to deduct from the bond because of this.
NZ's journalists *cannot* keep publishing this stuff verbatim while the National coalition cuts *everything* to fund incredibly unnecessary and imbalanced tax breaks for landlords - the people that need it least in the way that is the least productive!
bruh, wtaf is wrong with this guy
people complain about left-twitter being too online, too 'purity focused' yada yada, but at least we understand the boundary between shit-posting and... a pre-school??
He'll definitely delete this, but file as yet another reason this man should be nowhere near political commentary in this country. Why have our media outlets encouraged this for so many years? He's always been this nasty, and this isn't even the worst mask slip.
