book, “Advocacy and Change in International Organizations: Communication, Protection, and Reconstruction in UN Peacekeeping”!
Another nice day in English-speaking academia: professors of ethics justifying ***Russian settler colonialism*** because money spent on military assistance to Ukraine's self-defence could be spent on climate change instead
The article advocates ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia because "Ukrainians...[can] move to other territories that Ukraine continues to possess".
It literally justifies ***ethnic cleansing***
What about Ukrainians prevented from or unable to move? Women in the occupied territories being raped?LGBTQ+ persons being killed? Ukrainian children indoctrinated into Russian fascism to be used in Russia's ongoing or next invasion of Ukraine?
Paternalistically, it frames Ukraine's willingness to defend all of its territory as a sentimental attachment "to particular places...[and] particular geographies", ignoring the reality of the Russian occupation, which appears to be a continuation of genocidal Soviet policies

One-and-a-half years after 🇷🇺 full-scale invasion of 🇺🇦, we recognised that the war is imperialist
But how does this framing help understand 🇷🇺 behaviour in the run-up to the escalation, brutality of the campaign, domestic support for it – as well as 🇺🇦 resistance?
🧵 below…
⭕️ new forum article online
In it
@Kseniya_Oksamyt
asks why many failed to predict the Russian invasion of Ukraine + its brutality.
Russia's behavior, she argues, has been Ukraine-specific.

This excellent 2014 article shows how all the popular pro-Russian tropes
- "whataboutism"
- NATO’s expansion "threatening" Russia
- an "understanding" of Russia’s "feelings" over losing its empire
are peak imperialism

It's not just envy but a transgression of hierarchies. Ukrainians, whose 'appropriate' place in the hierarchy is an inferior one according to Russians, 'dared' to have decent living standards + enjoy greater belonging to Europe (e.g. visa-free tourism).

Who Is Behind the Expansion of UN Peacekeeping Mandates?
@Kseniya_Oksamyt
draws on her award-winning book Advocacy & Change in IOs to show how diplomats, bureaucrats & experts drove the expansion of UN peacekeeping mandates.
It's out! Main findings:
- UNSC seeks to direct PKO mandate expansion
- Secretariat & UNSC prefer different PKO tasks, like early recovery (Sec) vs PoC (UNSC)
- UNSG reports don't seem to drive 'large mandates with formulaic tasks' as HIPPO suggested
