Happy new year. It's my year: the dragon 🐉. In the spirit of fresh starts and change, I'm moving off twitter and will focus on blog posts, Linkedin and TikTok for my internet dialogues.
Here's a list of draft titles and two complete posts:
Psychedelic/MDMA therapy at Monarch clinic in Australia will cost $25,000 or $19,000 if no private insurance. This includes 12 psychotherapy sessions with 3 psychedelic dosing sessions (of 6-8 hours duration).
Is anyone aware of other Australian clinics with pricing out?
Incredible words from Rosalind Watts former Imperial psilocybin trial clinical psych “psychedelics are supposed to help us come into connection w/ each other...what I observed in the psychedelic field was the absolute opposite of that." 1/
"What I saw over the years was that it was attracting people that were highly narcissistic and they were becoming more narcissistic over time. And observing that, for a while I thought, maybe I’m just imagining that. I always thought I could fit around it, or it was me…" 2/
"And I started to realise that we have these amazing powerful plants, these powerful approaches but that they were in the hands of the wrong ppl. That the ppl who put themselves forward to be at the front of that cue and say 'yeah I'll be the one to pioneer" 4/
- and I'm including myself in this - are not the right people to hold it. So I myself am stepping down saying: I've been part of something that was really disgusting, that was horrible to be part of, that was horrible to witness. It is grotesque." 5/
"...then I realised that there was something deeply toxic about many of the ppl I was working with. And it was a shock to me...this bizarre competitive ego gains I was seeing everywhere..." 3/
"And I'm standing down and saying, I don't want to be part of that party anymore. I've got like two books worth of stories the things that I've seen that are so disturbing that happened to me, that happened to other people, so deeply wrong." 6/
Viewable on but behind a paywall. Incredible honesty, vulnerability, and bravery to make such a clear point about the reality of what she experienced. Thank you Dr Watts.
Friendly reminder that
@MAPS
still *publishes* and sells Grof’s 2001 book LSD Psychotherapy which pathologises homosexuality as an illness resulting from trauma in the birth canal
(CW: next tweet is a screenshot of the book and it's....disturbing) 🧵 1/
Why are Nutt, Carhart-Harris, MAPS, Michael Pollan, Mind Medicine Australia and Emyria posting on twitter and linked-in as if nothing out of the ordinary happened yesterday?
Tbh, being on TV and talking about abuses in my field of research as a fresh PhD student is slightly terrifying. But I did it anyways because I deeply believe we can and must make psychedelic research safer by actively addressing patterns of abuse. Check it out this Monday:
@Shrink_at_Large
@GeorgeJulian
In a 3rd yr psych class this year I listened to a prof tell students that BPD ppl aren’t really suicidal they just sometimes “go too far”. The harm and stigma is baked into the entire system.

for authorised psychiatrists is the global equivalent of Alberta being the first Canadian province to medically regulate them.
I suspect there will be a whole lot of silence and distancing re: Sessa. Rather than look at it as a *systemic* problem at the core of the psychedelic renaissance, it will *again* be labeled as the problem of a 'lone wolf'. It's not. A lot of people ignored a lot of red flags.
I don't have the words to articulate why it is so desperately important for
@MAPS
to address this and remove this insidious hate from texts that form the foundation of their therapeutic manual. 7/
Please.
@RickDoblin
In response to unsubstantiated claims, my MDMA couples therapy article was removed for a month. It is back up now, in its original form. The article was not found to contain any factual errors 1/
Interesting to see this in the initial recruitment info for Compass study - imo it's a positive step for informed consent compared to other recruitment info i've seen.
Completely unsurprising: Francoise Bourzat is back on the MMA training faculty. I left MMA training in '21 in part bc of their failure to address allegations of abuse and serious ethical transgressions. Bourzat herself is open about her completely unboundaried practice.
Nothing like a case report from the good ol' days of LSD research. MacCallum, 1968:
"Male, aged 39. Single. Has succeeded for years being a parasite on his mother and brother, living the life of a gentleman whilst they slave...
On reading summary of Sessa's case, I am most struck by how utterly appalling it is for him to call his abuse "a blip", while trying to maintain his registration. This says so much. Reading this nauseating - please strongly consider whether you do.
The role of the therapist in psychedelic/MDMA therapy according to Dr Gita Vaid,

Wild how
@MindMedicineAU
can't mute ppls mics in a large webinar, but as soon as they saw me in the meeting, booted me out 2x, for nothing 💀. I didn't even comment on the absurdity of Peter aggressively telling people to ignore any critical researchers.
When did
@MindMedicineAU
first learn Sessa was being investigated? Why was he giving talks on consent and appropriate conduct when (I assume) he already knew he was being investigated for having a relationship w/ px? I think MMA has a responsibility to comment on the news
I'm gathering instances of ppl saying that "psychedelic/mdma therapy is like __ years of therapy" - not sure why yet - trying to find the first? if you have any to contribute, pls add here:
While touch and "focused bodywork" for "energy blocks" are core parts of MAPS therapeutic manual and the images associated with MDMA therapy, you will find no mention of this in the latest trial results (or nearly all other publications on MDMA therapy) - this is a problem.
Mind Medicine Australia charges a $250 application fee - way more than any other school I've ever applied for. They also asked me to pay the full $8,000 course fee before even being interviewed for 'consideration' into the course. Trust yourself when something feels wrong.
@MAPS
are big fans of Stan Grof. They publish and sell his books and frequently cite his work. MAPS also promotes "Queer-affirming MDMA-assisted therapy".
I recently came across some tensions in these two positions 🧵1/
Reminder that Bourzat is the only person to be decertified as a Hakomi method practitioner for ethical violations yet still promotes her Hakomi training in bios. Lord, grant me the confidence of a psychedelic saviour….
They thanked me for bringing it to their attention. However, I am by no means the first one to bring this to their attention - in 2021 the Mithoefers acknowledged in an interview that the queerphobia in Grofs work has caused people distress. 5/
I can quite confidently say that this will not be your "last chance" to sign up for a psychedelics today course, and seats are not limited- these guys are shameless with the high-pressure sales tactics. "turn your passion into a career"?! Please, no.

's Tania de Jong taking a page straight out of JP's handbook on fear mongering about the "attack" on free speech. Reminder: MMA have threatened multiple ppl with lawsuits for speaking out against them. The irony here knows no bounds 😅
There are numerous queer-phobic passages throughout Grof's work, including his core theory that psychopathologies result from birth trauma. I already wrote about it here 6/
Looking forward to our deep dive on cults, narcissistic leadership, whistleblowers, and the intersections with psychedelics.
June 8th - 7pm (AEST) - online and free:
This therapist sexually assaulted a patient outside of the trial also - this is a massive part of this case and this is an extremely misleading characterisation. It is not disputed and there was no way for this to be "consensual" despite whatever he claimed.
@NewYorker
Please fix
Who's going to tell the New Yorker (usually meticulous in their fact checking) that MDMA was never called the name "Therapy" but rather "Adam" and also "Empathy" briefly, before being called "Ecstasy" (and now "Molly") ?
Ben Sessa, UK import guiding Aus psychedelic therapy, calls psychedelics any substance that “can allow for access to repressed memories” - wildly dangerous assumption imo. Look forward to reading new paper highlighting this area needing more discussion.

Happy to share this article I co-authored: "A taxonomy of regulatory and policy matters relevant to psychedelic-assisted therapy in Australia" - ft. an absolutely enormous table of factors for regulators to consider 1/
Should MAPS and Mind Medicine Australia therapists be required to disclose to potential patients that therapists are taught that birth trauma is core of all psychopathology? How much info on theoretical orientation is required for "informed consent"?
On Sept 26 2022 I was told by a senior MAPS person that they are sure that "Stan does not hold any of those beliefs that queerness is pathological"... 3/
This is an incredible resource and great contribution to psychedelic open science - meticulously researched and presented, absolute worth spending some time to browse through. Very inspiring - the open database of my dreams ✨

that the rate of first responder suicide in Australia is nowhere close to one a day. Extremely disappointing to see Nutt repeating this misinformation, again.
Of course it was Tania De Jong who found Palestinian solidarity so offensive at the Sydney Theatre Company.
I stand w/ the other Jewish people who say: "“Using this history – our history – to scream antisemitism upon seeing a keffiyeh is sickening. Not. In. My. Name.”

I’m currently marking undergrad psychology papers where students have to identify the ‘correct’ DSM diagnosis and recommend the ‘best’ tx based on a one page case summary of a fictional px🙃
The only way to change the structures of communities or institution that enabled abuse is to champion those who speak out.
Biggest thank you to those involved in speaking out through
@nymag
and
@psymposia
- there’s a lot of work to do.
I’ve also noticed a disconnect between how clinicians say touch is used in PAT (only in moments of high distress for grounding) and the images/video that has emerged from sessions where patients are seemingly managing fine and the therapist reaching out and initiating touch.
I’m happy to share new work on how hype works to mythologize, market, and institutionalize psychedelic-assisted therapy (P-AT) to fit a neoliberal medical paradigm that prioritizes profit above all else. In collaboration with

It's a good step but important to be clear that it is far from how people may interpret the idea of 'legalised for medical use' - here's a good thread on how this may actually look in Australia :)
How accessible will MDMA and psilocybin be, following the Australian government's decision to make them available as Schedule 8 controlled drugs?
Probably not very accessible at all, for a bunch of reasons:
@NellAitch
blaming the px/PD for the clinician's boundary violations is a classic. the only thing it's an indication of is the clinician's need for serious supervisory support. what a profound lack of insight.
How many headlines have there been about Australia being the first country to medicalise psilocybin/MDMA and then
@MAPS
sends this today? What am I not getting?
@Serotonin2arec
No, it’s actually exactly the opposite. It’s trying to stop manipulation and exploitation of people. It’s also not “rooting against” — it’s pointing out egregiously unethical parts of their practice so people are harmed further by them.
I do not support the statement that 'MDMA is as addictive as cocaine'. I tweeted a summary of comment from TGA rep in live webinar. I don't even think it's very useful to make sweeping comparisons of 'addiction potential' given role of unique socio/econ/bio factors in addiction.
Send your public comments on the ICER review of MDMA-AT to publiccomments

.org until April 22. I’ll be writing in support of the reviews findings with some additional points from my own research. Looking forward to seeing more of the public comments posted.
What constitutes 'highly developed'? Imo, this would include meaningful co-design, extensive feedback and testing. None of this happened for the MAPS manual - it is entirely based on a small homogenous group of clinician perspectives with zero patient input.
This quote is a great example of the core of Mind Med Australia's advocacy and views: MDMA and psychedelics will solve the problem of poor people being too lazy to provide for themselves while they lead meaningless lives. 3/

Before there was Power Trip, there was
@NYMag
's 1985 piece on the drug Rick Doblin wants us to call "Adam"
Spoiler alert: featured MDMA guide Dr Ingrasci resigned his medical licence a few years later after sexually abusing multiple ppl in sessions
Tania is now encouraging Michael Winlo to share the story of a woman currently in a clinical trial, it's clear Michael knows this story should not be shared and he provided a very diplomatic question dodge...why was Tania even aware of this person's story?
Overall my impression is that the TGA had a surface level understanding of the research. They say they are “not the regulators of clinical practice” and yet they are essentially mandating psychotherapy, without any understanding of that psychotherapy
I’m so thankful I was able to attend this opening yesterday - it was so powerful and liberating to be in a space where the concept of ‘destigmatising’ is real emancipatory action, not meaningless platitude. Highly recommend viewing the film up on YouTube now
Well, here it is! The short film about my
#SliceSilence
project is now live on YouTube, following tonight’s premiere in Sydney.
It was filmed last year, before I knew I’d be extending this exhibition into a PhD… so this story is ‘To Be Continued!’
This time they removed Hakomi from her bio. Bourzat was briefly certified as a Hakomi Therapist, and her certification was permanently revoked in 1997 based on multiple ethical violations. She continued to mention Hakomi certification in her bio for years

we're not in the wild west of anything. we're in a completely modern medical system intentionally designed by people with power to benefit people with power. that's it.
FDA: psychotherapy in psychedelic trials hasn’t been characterised. This means what many have said: we have no idea what is going on in therapy in these clinical trials which is a major issue for interpreting the results. It is a free for all and is exactly how/when abuse happens

Imo this also applies to people who haven't already had direct experience w/ psychedelics. In Australia, wealth will now determine access to in-country clinical and overseas legal use. Meanwhile, the hoi polloi are subjected to draconian drug law, lacking any grounding in science
Vital reading. Thank you for sharing Joe: "I have come to believe that, in my opinion, the reputation of Johns Hopkins was leveraged alongside the highly suggestible influence of psychedelic substances, with some funders and researchers demonstrating unhealthy boundaries..."1/2
It has been suggested to me that I should be cautious about what I say publicly and I agree. There are limits and a lot of important considerations. But I also deeply believe in respectful debate, sharing and shining a light on the things that are hard and complex.
Tania - Mind Medicine Australia: "we can provide housing, and programs and activities and food to ppl who are disadvantaged, but at the end of the day, if they can't get over their trauma and get to the root cause of their trauma, they're still going to remain stuck ..." 1/
Please note that Howard Whitaker was part of a LSD-cult and did later use LSD himself. He later left the cult and did absolutely nothing about the many children and adults still being abused in it. Not a cool guy.
I’ve also heard over and over the same negligent, silencing responses from the institutions implicated. None of this is unique to psychedelics. We’ve seen this all before, and yet this pattern repeats.
3/
Mind Medicine Australia's Tania de Jong is a member of Australia's right-wing anti-vax conspiracy-loving party, headed by Clive Palmer who is suing Aus gov for $300bil over mining rights. Does anyone have access to this article?
This is a good example of where the New Age underpinnings of MAPS shine through. What concerns me is that this is masked by their mainstream science PR campaigns. I know I personally felt mislead when I started to actually dig into their theoretical orientations.
MAPS list of possible difficult psychedelic experiences. This is the leading psychedelic organisation in the world and it doesn’t mention panic, paranoia, fear of dying, derealization, dissociation etc. no it’s ‘UFO encounters and travelling in the spirit realm’

Wow this makes me physically nauseous. My mom was deeply harmed by "modern" ECT a few years ago. It's a barbaric intervention with rubbish science behind it. To platform someone as a cheerleader for ECT 6 months after "the darkest place she's ever been" is deeply irresponsible.
Why does the Australian TGA call psilocybin "psilocybine"? The TGA says it is following ‘international nomenclature’ the International Nonproprietary Name (INN), British Approved Name (BAN) and 1971 UN Convention on Drugs.
And yet no one else spells it with an 'e'... 1/
