And Russia could have had it all: friendly Ukraine, great power status, Western technology, energy trade with Europe, etc, etc, had it been just a little less heavy-handed and a little more respectful towards its partners’ wishes and choices. I just… keep being baffled…

So here it is: my Muhu skirt. Made by grandmother/great aunt in 1930s. Self-made from scratch: they grew sheep, cut wool, made fabric, dyed it with ‘mine yellow’, sewed and embroidered.  Small traces of Slava in my wardrobe.

And for the first time now the poisoning of Navalny makes some sense to me: if Putin was planning that war already back then, the of course it made sense to eliminate the only person who could have mobilized significant domestic protest.

How can Putin imagine he’ll get a friendly Ukraine after this?! Even if outwardly pacified (a big if,) memories survive. I know what I am talking about: in the peaceful Soviet Estonia of my childhood, no one had forgotten occupation and deportations. Memories passed in families

And now Zhirinovsky has truly died. The timing feels symbolic - for the past 30 years, he has been the embodiment of a farcical/rhetorical version of Russia’s expansionism and aggressiveness. Now that aggression is reality, Zhirinovsky’s role has become obsolete…

Not just our rationality that failed us, but also Russia’s. Few among Russia’s expert class believed this would happen. Contradicts most things we know about the logic, aims and means of Russia’s foreign policy. So I feel I was wrong together with the Russians, not with the West

I know smart people who thought it was impossible that Putin would go that far. And nobody could have been sure how things develop. But I think it's a real problem that in postmodern 🇪🇺 we no longer understand military power and use our own "rationality" always as a yardstick.

When I was a child, older Muhu women would casually talk about ‘mine yellow’ (miinikollane) as a color. For a long time I assumed they meant a specific shade of yellow. The idea that they used the actual explosives to dye fabric was just too… fantastic. But that was the case.

But also picric acid. Apparently, this chemical was used to make explosives, but one could also use it to dye fabric, and that’s what the local Muhu women did. The famous yellow Muhu skirts became abundant after WWI, and this was all thanks to Slava.

Sounds like Ukrainians are recreating the spirit of the Maidan of ‘13-14 below ground. The power and spirit of civil society there is something you can’t imagine unless you have seen and felt it. Putin doesn’t get or respect that. It’s why ultimately the place can’t be defeated

Slava sunk in shallow waters of Estonia’s West coast, in between Muhu and mainland Estonia. Its 800 of crew seem to have survived. Some in fact came from Muhu, so they just took a boat and went home. Some Russians are said to have settled in nearby Matsalu where they found wives.
