Iโ€™d always assumed layoffs were stressful for people because of financial concerns. Iโ€™m not even that worried about money right now, but the feeling of being discarded, tying self-worth and identity to my job, loss of missionโ€ฆ all of that is harder than I expected. Thatโ€™s all.

I finished my PhD at 26. I regret this. Take time off between grad school and undergrad. Live your life. Defer, read, work, explore, party, save, make art, sleep. Donโ€™t rush. Grad school is not the safety net you think it is. The degree will be there when youโ€™re done. Enjoy life!

Evaluating subgroup disparities in ML shouldn't only be a "fairness" thing. It should be ML/data science best practice in general. If your model performs poorly for some identifiable subgroup, you should probably go fix that, just in the interest of making a better model.

@math_rachel While I disagree with the perspective that a solution must be offered in order to point out a problem, itโ€™s worth noting that work in the AI ethics space often does point to a solution..... donโ€™t build it. Or change policy. These often donโ€™t count because they arenโ€™t โ€œtechnicalโ€.

Today I found out that a group of adults at the park was making fun of my 1.75 y/o daughter for "looking like a boy" because she has short hair. Shaming kids for not conforming to gendered beauty standards starts earlier than I'd thought. Lord help me with this parenting thing.

โ€œBiased algorithms are easier to fix than biased peopleโ€. But, in some cases, I don't see these as entirely different problems. Sometimes fixing a biased algorithm first requires fixing biased people.

Hey #FAccT people, has anyone looked at the Zillow Zestimate model? Pretty sure that thing has a huge influence on the prices people actually pay for houses (which would make for some interesting evaluation challenges). A "high stakes" setting I haven't seen discussed much.

The last year has left me feeling professionally burned and burned out to a degree I didnโ€™t think possible. Anyway I took a vacation to Italy for a couple weeks, wore some ridiculous hats, and came back feeling *almost* human again.

It ainโ€™t over til itโ€™s over but I left a perfectly awesome academic job to come to work at twitter less than two years agoโ€ฆ and I donโ€™t regret a thing. Iโ€™ve learned so much and have gotten to work with the best of the best on a platform I love. What a fucking privilege.
