But brother Kendi, Liz Magill (a white woman), dean of U Penn, also faced calls for her resignation and also resigned following her and Gay’s congressional testimony. Sally Kornbluth of MIT is also facing pressure.
Those are white women. Does that not undermine your claim?
When a racist mob attacks a Black person, it finds a seemingly legitimate reason for the attack that allows for it to accrue popular support and credibility, and which allows the growing mob to deny they are attacking the person in this way because the person is Black. 1/4
If you want to bring America together now I don't care if you were polarizing yesterday. If you are sincere in this desire, I for one will be forgiving if you make mistakes tomorrow.
We've all played a role in the mess we're in. Yet from mistakes we pull the wisdom that redeems.
Goodness gracious man. Don't you agree that Sam was making a substantive point about reality - not pining for kids to die?
Here's the link to the whole episode starting from that part of our conversation:
What is it with Sam Harris and dead children?
In his new interview with John Wood Jr, Sam Harris claims that "in some sense we were unlucky" that covid didn't kill hundreds of thousands of children.
What *happened* to him?
🧵 will follow later today.
Looks like I have Covid. Symptoms started Friday.
Not too bad. Chest pains came in waves over the weekend, making it hard to sleep. The rest has been a cocktail; body aches, sore throat, sore eyes, cough. But generally mild.
Grateful for my health. And hopeful for yours.
#RIPRushLimbaugh
In the early 90's Rush did a big segment on my grandfather who was also a pioneer in radio. I appreciated the fact that he honored grandpa's legacy.
Now really I was critical of Rush. But so what? Life is precious. I'd say choose charity. Or at least silence.

a bit. Worth saying that Andy has a lot more courage than most of his critics. He puts himself on the line to expose the truth.
Let's work for the day when these things do not happen in America.
"In your struggle for justice, let your oppressor know that you are not attempting to defeat or humiliate him, or even pay him back for injustices that he has heaped upon you. Let him know that you are merely seeking justice for him as well as yourself." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
It's amazing to casually click on an article in Politico about Kanye and see
@joerogan
identified as a "conservative political figure."
I get Joe is a bit out of the box and critical of aspects of the left. But for goodness sake.
Try harder people!
You're wrong for that Cenk.
I like Cenk. But there are ppl who have had limbs blown off in combat, dedicated their lives to feeding the poor, ppl who have given organs, cared for at risk children & have done way more for humanity than your average pundit who're voting for Trump.
If someone tells me they are voting for
@realDonaldTrump
, I instantly lose all respect for them. This is very literal and includes anyone in my personal life.
You have to be able to carry two seemingly contradictory ideas in your mind simultaneously if you are going to pursue truth seriously.
Personal responsibility and collective consciousness. Freedom and rule of law. Firmness and compassion.
To be awake is to seek the balance.
I've lived in the projects. Visited ppl in drug dens. Hung w OG's, been harassed by cops, have family & neighbors were murdered in the streets, ppl killed outside my window, worked w/ drug addicts & at risk youth in L.A.

This article reeks of privileged ignorance.
I can't believe Sam is retweeting this right wing trash written by "Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Los Angeles".
Whole article can be summed up by the author saying: "I have hardly known racism in my life."
Clearly.
It is strange to me to see antiracists argue that cultural critiques are categorically illegitimate when antiracism itself amounts, in large part, to a massive critique of white culture.
It doesn't call itself that. But isn't that what it is? Isn't *white culture* the problem???
With
@Ayishat_Akanbi
!
Honestly I can't think of someone who inspires me more in the conversational landscape than Ayishat. Her every sentence is richly humane, as is her way of being in the world.
I loved Joe Biden's DNC speech. He has a story of loss and redemption that is deeply human & endearing to me.
I wish he had not lied about the context of Trump's "fine people on both sides" statement after Charlottesville.
Trump never said Nazis were fine people. That is false.
I haven't watched much of the
@joerogan
@drsanjaygupta
conversation.
But I can't tell you how sad it is for me to see people turn what seems like a good faith conversation between 2 men trying to set a good example for the rest of us into a death match where someone got "owned."
I'm looking forward to chatting with
@ConceptualJames
on the BA Pod tomorrow.
James and I have many mutual interests and friends. A lot to talk about.
Sadly he does not provoke very strong reactions in people. But hopefully a few of you will be interested in listening anyway!
I enjoy using Twitter, and think it's possible to get value out if it.
But if you find yourself on here giving reactions and opinions that are increasingly rude, nasty and otherwise indicative of a person you don't want to be, don't hesitate to give this a break.
Well, I know that none of you folks are interested in hearing me and
@JohnHMcWhorter
talk about the issues of the day.
Nevertheless we will be chewing the fat on the
@braverangels
podcast next week.
My 4 year old daughter just walked in the room and said "kiss?" gave me a kiss and walked out again.
Take your billions of dollars, your millions of followers, your yachts, cars and clubs. If I had to choose, what I got is all I need.
He's right.
Overwhelming volume of ad-hominem directed at Kmele. But I don't see many people dissecting and confronting his arguments.
Kmele's perspective may be wrong, but show me how.
Lots of these tonight:
Ad hominem. Crude racial slurs. Assailed for my *youth*. Derided for my *obvious self-loathing*... and my overconfidence? LEGIONS of strawmen....
Largely absent from all of this; direct rebuttals of particular arguments I made.
I need better haters.

If Hamas had only tried to kill soldiers (hell, even just men) on October 7th, if they had refrained from rape and parading the contorted bodies of their victims in the streets, then I could see this perspective as understandable for those who believe Palestine is violently…
A student at Durham College in Canada says Hamas aren’t terrorists but that they should conduct the October 7th Massacre against Israelis “again and again and again and again.”

The term "woke" used to have a more spiritual, humanistic connotation.
I would consider
@cvaldary
to be very woke in the Erykah Badu sense of the term.
Awe man. If people read books like they read people, they would write reviews on whole novels based on only the first page. 😕
With people, you turn the page by asking questions, not by leaping to assumptions.
That's how you enjoy the book as well.
I had a fascinating conversation with
@ConceptualJames
on antiracism.
We dove deep into the topic. If this subjects matters to you, give it a listen.
People had a lot of feelings about my talking to James. I address some of it up front.
Let's do it again James!
@icecube
Cube is being pragmatic.
I'm not voting for Trump, but truth is Trump HAS done SOME beneficial things for the Black community.
Why? Not cause he's a hero. Because it was in his interest. But that's politics. Cube is seeing it for what it is. Using his leverage when it counts.
...but what he's saying here is easy to understand. Furthermore it seems pretty obvious to me that he is right. We are more protective of our children than our grandparents, & the fact that this targeted old ppl made it easier to take less seriously for some.
That seems obvious.
The revolution we need is a spiritual one. The changes we need are not merely matters of systemic policy but our culture of virtue. Love, honesty, integrity and nobility must find themselves en vogue.
& humility. A rare commodity among social zealots and partisans of all kinds.
There's beauty in repentance. We are all of us flawed enough to go slowly in condemning others.
I wish I had the humility that some people think I have. But I am working on it each day.
Let us stand on redemption. Stand on character. Anything built on that foundation will last.
To live in bitterness is a tragedy. To die in it is even worse.
We are all heading to an end as mortal beings. But if we have touched people with grace across the course of our lives we will have beauty to look back upon.
Peace comes with a clear conscience. Tend to yours.
There is contrast to draw between Nonviolence & Antiracism.
In some ways they're related. In others antiracism threatens the progress nonviolence built.
Yet all antiracism isn't the same.
Thoughts on Kendi, DiAngelo & reclaiming the philosophy of MLK:
I get it. But I don't get this way of talking about it.
Her death is a tragedy even if her actions were what led to it. Let's not sound dismissive of human life because others may be unreasonable.
I’m not sure this has ever been done before...but as our national political dialogue continues to decline, my opponent
@PetersonUtah
and I decided to try something different. We can disagree without hating each other. Let’s make Utah an example to the nation.

I doubt that most Black conservatives are married to white women. Being one myself (married to a Black woman) that’s not my experience.
However - I did just fall into a rabbit hole googling the most famous Black conservatives I could think of off the top of my head and I have to…
I wouldn't actually have a problem w Mayor Lightfoot informally wanting to grant greater access to journalists of color who may be underrepresented.
But *exclusive* access, publicized as such? Its a damaging of public trust that's totally unnecessary to fostering representation.
This woman is beautiful and her accent is adorable, in my opinion. She also seems to be skilled in her craft, which is an impressive one.
What do you gain by running people down?
Your beauty can stand on its own. You diminish it through the ugly way in which you choose to…
This accent needs to be illegal and women should be banned from doing manual labour like this.
There is NOTHING feminine about American women.
American women are literally men.
Virtue, IMO, is the anchor missing from the ship of modern culture. Hence the storm of relativism tosses us about.
Thank you
@AreoMagazine
for letting me make the case:
Dear
@elonmusk
It's been striking to watch the excitement with which advocates for free speech welcomed your leadership
@Twitter
(myself among them). S.M. has deranged our ability to think clearly & relate. Thank you for responding to this problem.
But - I am pretty concerned.
Sam Harris is a philosopher, neuroscientist, author, host of The
@MakingSenseHQ
podcast, and one of the foremost public intellectuals in the United States, if not the world. In this conversation, Sam and I talked about his unwillingness to publicly debate proponents of the stolen…
Finally read Between the World and me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
He has a pessimistic view of nearly everything. It is not a forward looking story.
But it is a deeply lyrical expression of the cumulative pain of Black cultural memory & the solidarity that flows from it.
Even if President Trump were to win re-election, it seems clear to me that conservatism is losing the cultural argument in America.
To a degree, it has lost ground even within the Republican Party. Trump himself is in certain respects the proof of that.
Opinions do not equate to character. The correlation may not even be as strong as you'd think.
The raw material of goodness exists inside many misguided souls. And we are all misguided in one way or another.
People can learn. People can grow. Believe in our ability to do so.
Here’s the scandalous truth about me: I really like
@benshapiro
. I like
@cenkuygur
. I would get along well with

.
I think Ben’s way of looking at race and inequality is woefully incomplete, and Kendi would have us living in a quasi-tyrannical state to solve for that…
Why are we divided? And is it worth believing we can bridge the gaps to each other?
I very much enjoyed this conversation with
@RubinReport
.
You may too:
I consider myself a Christian. But I do not find easy opportunities to wade deeply into the religious vocabulary I wish I could use.
That is a confession to my followers. Most of you don't know that about me.
But that fear may be doing me a disservice.
I can't tell.
Dear Saira,
Have you ever been wrong in your life? If so, was it people condemning you or gracefully trying to understand you that was the better way to help you see the light?
We don’t reach each other by throwing each other away. We don’t heal without reaching each other.
If you are a Republican in 2023, you are a fascist.
If you are married to/in a relationship with a Republican in 2023, you are a fascist.
If you are friends with a Republican in 2023, you are a fascist.
At some point, your actions need to match your memes.
It’s a low bar.
...of Elon Musk. We need a Twitter that can be trusted to be fair and that encourages our engaging each other in a way that builds bridges rather than burning them.
I and millions of others want to see you succeed in this! I hope that you take the example you set here seriously.
@BasedMikeLee
Well if moderate Republicans swing to Jeffries, it will be the completion of the process Gaetz and company set in motion.
The overall dysfunction of the Republican majority is what is on display here.
…but nobody can see everything. Woke leftists will frequently see injustices that I’m not as sensitive to and right wing libertarians and conservatives will see threats to liberty I don’t immediately pick up on.
We all have our roles. The challenge is in harmonizing them.
WATCH: I came here with a dream 48 years ago to be the greatest athlete in the world. Now I enter a different kind of race, arguably my most important one yet, because California is worth fighting for!
Your character will be weakened by the tendency to need the approval of groups. Stand in your individuality.
On the other hand we only exist fully within our community. Serve other people. Be a part of them. Let them be part of you.
That's different from seeking to please them.
You can hear the context in the clip Alexandros cuts here too. Sam's point is that, with all of the same levels of knowledge being in place, should it have been the case that members of our society whom we are more protective of had been more vulnerable (i.e. children) we...
Peaceful activists with class and integrity "changed the world because the world could see in them the lie that was being told about them."
"Peaceful protests end peacefully."
I literally can't tell whether this has been a great week for me or a terrible one as far as my reputation is concerned. 😅🤔
But I have been consistent in my advocacy for the one thing I think matters above all else - that we build understanding w each other, whatever it takes.
...naturally would have had a much more rational reaction to the science. We would not have entertained unfounded cynicism with respect to the mRNA vaccines. We therefore, in just a slightly different reality, would have been socially and psychologically predisposed...
Good God Gad - you too?!
But seriously
@GadSaad
- I think you're wrong in how your treating Sam's comments. But I also think that you and I could have a good conversation about the thing that was the *actual point* of Sam and my conversation - building goodfaith discourse again.
It is okay to have an affinity for your own cultural group, in my opinion.
I live a very multicultural existence. But I don't condemn people for keeping to "their own."
When we harm others that is a different thing. But distinct ethnic communities don't bother me at all.
@JohnHMcWhorter
and I address controversy over the film, The Fall of Minneapolis. It argues officer Derek Chauvin was wrongly convicted of murdering George Floyd. We touted the film at TGS, but Radley Balko has just debunked it, credibly so. Did we err? I say yes, John says no.
@contrarylarry1
@bomani_jones
The problem is, it’s degrading and traffics in every possible stereotype while calling itself building on the legacy of a show that showcased the struggle of a Black family upholding family values and living life with dignity in the face of inequality.
I wouldn’t have as much of…
Critic: "John why can't you use fewer words?"
Me: "Fascinating question. It starts with a realization that complex ideas expressed even in relation to broader, simpler subjects require a nuanced mode of articulation capable of yielding dynamic understanding."
Critic: 😠
Me: 😐
Oliver Anthony: “We are the melting pot of the world and that’s what makes us strong, our diversity”
Such a let down. Did he sell out already to the rich men north of Richmond?
If you believe that goodwill and the capacity to overcome our differences is vital to the future of America, and that it is worth organizing around these principles, give me a follow.
Let’s figure it out together.
Peaked at a couple stories about the 'downfall' of Ellen Degeneres' public image.
Is she mean behind the scenes? No idea. But much of what's being said about her is she was too friendly w/ George W. Bush & too forgiving of Kevin Hart.
These things are to her credit in my book.
I do not conflate moral character with political affiliation.
Perhaps you can argue they are correlated. I doubt it. But if so, I suspect it is a much weaker correlation than others imagine.
Bottom line is this:
They are not the same thing.
Hahaha. A little stand up action with Andrew Yang!
Yang weds practical innovation w/ profound idealism like few others. You never get the sense that the

or the

are in it to exclude one group of Americans or the other.
Beautiful. Keep moving Forward.
