Finn Russell said post match - ‘we had a little laugh about the tackle when we got up, Cameron said you’ve learnt how to tackle since joining Bath then.’
Love it
My problem with the RFU lowering the tackle rate is who is probably the best low tackler in the English professional game - Sam Underhill?
How has it worked out for him?
Tabai Matson is rocketing his way to the top of my list of favourite head coaches/DoRs after coming into the press room at Quins on Saturday to find a bunch of us working fairly late and offering everyone a beer.
Quins are doing things right on and off the pitch
I am delighted to say I am currently on paternity leave following the birth of my daughter on Monday but that means there will less than normal rugby coverage across Bristol Live, Gloucestershire Live, Somerset Live and Devon Live until the NY.
Merry Christmas everyone.
It was a highly impressive performance from Pat Lam at today’s press conference - the Bristol Bears DoR didn’t duck any questions. He turned up prepared for the questions with notes, facts and a message which will delight the fan base even more.
Six England call ups from bottom of the table Bath.
How do you interpret that?
Form is temporary, class is permanent?
The coaches have failed the players at Bath?
Eddie Jones has his favourites?
Premiership form doesn't matter to Jones?
I am delighted to say after 153 days and the toughest time of my professional career I am back off furlough to bring you all the latest rugby coverage from across the South West as the 2019/20 season reaches its climax.
Here is a sneak peak at Bristol Bears’ new training ground which is set to be ready for pre-season 2020-21 - also known as six months time. It is going to be a hell of a facility.
Gloucester Rugby reported to have signed Zach Mercer ahead of the 2023/24 season according to The Telegraph.
That would be a monster signing for the Cherry and Whites but also raises questions about a few futures at the club.
It is about 11 hours to the scheduled kick-off of Bristol Bears v Bath.
Premiership Rugby have managed to turn their Twitter icon black following the death of the Queen but have left their thousands of fans in the dark about whether the game will be on.
It's not good enough.
This
@BristolBears
side have no idea when they are beaten.
When you have players with a touch of magic and adventure in your DNA as a rugby club you can score from anywhere on the pitch and do anything.
The most exciting thing is there is still so much improvement to come.
It is such a privilege to be able to follow
@BristolBears
journey in the last three years having started covering the club on Pat Lam's first day in the job.
He has delivered on the promise he made that day to get Bristol back into the big time and there is more to come.
Just reflecting on the fact Hamish Watson is going to be a Lion.
I reported on him when he was a schoolboy at Oakham School.
It’s absolute madness Leicester Tigers didn’t lock him and Pablo Matera down while they were at the club. Imagine that backrow now!
I am delighted to say this week marks the the start of a new chapter for me as I will now be covering rugby full time, bringing you all the latest from
@bathrugby
and
@BristolBears
. And what a way to start with a pair of cracking West Country derbies. It’s a dream come true.
Stuart Hooper parts company with Bath after 15 years, eight as a player, five as club captain, seven in the coaching team.
He deserved better as DoR as he was given the job too early but should be remembered as a man who bleeds blue, black and white.
Anyone saying Friday night's 71-10 win over Bath was by Gloucester's first team - it wasn't.
This lot were missing:
15 Carreras
14 May
13 Harris
12 Atkinson
11 Rees-Zammit
10 Hastings
9 Varney
1 Rapava-Ruskin
2 Singleton
3 Gotovtsev
4 Slater
5 Alemanno
6 Craig
7 Reid
8 Polledri
I know all the stepping and try scoring is the super sexy stuff in rugby but this tackle on Mike Brown is my favourite Rokoduguni moment from games I have covered
Bath attacked brilliantly for 40 minutes then decided to stop.
Their obsessive, blinded, narrow mindedness to only score from a 5m line out is teetering on the idiotic now.
And they failed to score a single point during Sale’s three sin binnings.
It’s a mess at The Rec
Today was a giant step forward in the evolution of the
@BristolBears
as they showed incredible composure to win at one of toughest away grounds in English club rugby and they continue to do it in an entertaining style.
I have decided not to join the social media blackout this weekend.
I completely agree with the reasoning and sentiment behind it but with Bath in a massive European Challenge Cup semi-final I feel not sharing my reporting on it is letting the trolls win.

Pat Lam got his tactics wrong tonight for me, kicking the ball away on the halfway line [England-esque] sucked all the energy out of the packed stadium.
Rob Baxter said post match his side 'kept the crowd quiet', I would argue Bristol did much of the work themselves.
I didn't get a chance to do player ratings for Gloucester on Saturday but I thought these two - Billy Twelvetrees and Stephen Varney - were outstanding with the fly-half having one of his best games in years and Varney possibly his best ever display for the Cherry and Whites.
It was another coming of age performance from the
@BristolBears
tonight, who despite being injury ravaged, showed they can compete with the very best sides in Europe on their day. The future looks bright.
Two year contract extension for Will Stuart at Bath Rugby
I love that the club are actually telling their fans how long deals are. Bath are doing so much right at the moment.
The Mail on Sunday is reporting the Gallagher Premiership clubs have come to an agreement with BT Sport to screen every rescheduled game live with games that are not featured on TV available on a screening service which will be free to season ticket holders.
KO times still TBC
Exeter Chiefs number eight Sam Simmonds will be fit for Saturday's Gallagher Premiership game against Sale Sharks putting to bed injury fears over his ankle.
Great news for the British and Irish Lion to be
#LionsRugby
My other issue, is when you watch or play lower level amateur rugby a lot of players, particularly when they get a bit older. adopt an upper body drag down technique to avoid big collisions and save their bodies.
That will now be illegal.
Since when did Saracens start playing like the Barbarians?
Loving the versatility of their forwards, Maro Itoje popping up at scrum half regularly, Billy Vunipola throwing 20 yard passes from the traditional 9 spot at a line out, Vincent Koch breaking and giving scoring passes.
That is arguably Bristol Bears' best performance of the season.
They are looking more like a team which can win the Gallagher Premiership for the first time every week.
I have been saying since the start of the season what a big miss Luke Morahan has been for the Bristol Bears and today, in just his second appearance since returning from a hamstring injury, he showed why.
119m from 10 carries
Outstanding
With all sport suspended I have been put on furlough to help the newspapers and company I am very proud to work for.
There will still be some Bristol Bears and Bath Rugby news online and in print so please keep reading.
Stay safe and keep finding those silver linings in life.
Sometimes a photo is better than a thousand words.
Bath Rugby director of rugby Stuart Hooper and head coach Neal Hatley stand alone on the Ashton Gate pitch looking up at the record score line after a sobering defeat to their derby rivals
How is Cam Redpath only 23?
I rate him so highly and there are report he is set to sign a contract extension at Bath.
With the way next season’s backline is shaping up how could you not?
I am very interested to see what happens with Farrell, it was probably a yellow card offence at worst.
Both men were fairly low, the key thing for Gloucester is it was worthy of at least a yellow card so he shouldn't have been on the pitch to land the drop goal.
Jonathan Joseph has left Bath Rugby after a decade at the club and plenty of highlight moments during that time, with perhaps his partnership with Kyle Eastmond the peak of his time at The Rec.
You have to imagine that frees up some salary cap space
That was a coming of age performance and result for the
@BristolBears
who put in their most complete display of the season, scoring tries through the backs, powering over with a maul, fronting up in the forwards against a giant opposition pack and kicking intelligently.

I have seen loads of discussion about problems with Friday night rugby due to Wales v France not selling out tonight.
For me it’s got nothing to do with the fact it’s a Friday night and everything to do with the ticket prices.
People are feeling the pinch - £100+ is too much.
From that stunning opening day win over Bath to this closing day victory against Newcastle Falcons, the
@BristolBears
and all associated with them have been an absolute pleasure and privilege to cover. I am already excited for what next season has in store.
Why are Prem Rugby always so slow to react? Potential day of the game postponement with 25,000 expected at Ashton Gate on Friday night is far from ideal, albeit in incredibly rare circumstances.
Bristol Bears’ backline is going to be special when we get back to playing rugby
9 Randall
10 Sheedy
11 Naulago/Leiua
12 S Piutau
13 Radradra
14 Morahan
15 C Piutau
And perhaps more to come?
Just wow....
.
@BristolBears
take another huge stride towards the Marseille final with their second win of the season in France.
English teams aren't meant to win in France are they?
I have seen the rumours Bristol Bears are interested in signing Wales star Justin Tipuric but I am not writing anything on it until I hear something from a better source than Ruck.
I will look into it.
I can't get my head around Zach Mercer not making the cut for England, on a personal note I hope he can now just enjoy the first few weeks of fatherhood with his partner expecting in July
Zach Mercer’s Montpellier send off. French fans don’t rise out of their seats for much, but treated Mercer like he’d spent a decade at the club.
He was there for 2 seasons.
Such a shame we won’t see him at the World Cup
Tactical kicking, accurately and with purpose in tough conditions is how you win rugby games in the winter in the most competitive domestic rugby league in the world. Today
@BristolBears
showed us they have many strings to their bow.
And just you wait for the sun to come out!
An incredible turnaround from Bath means Finn Russell will be playing Champions Cup rugby next season.
Injuries permitting, Bath should be top four contenders next season.
Just a reflection on Bristol Bears' victory.
How well is Andy Uren playing at the moment? I would argue he has been the most important player at the club since January.
A bit of good news for Bath Rugby - I understand Taulupe Faletau has returned from Wales training this week and is in contention to play this weekend against Leicester Tigers.
Leicester Tigers’ foundations are now absolutely solid, they just need a little more stardust in the backline for when organised and workmanlike doesn’t quite cut it. Oh for a Telusa Veainu or Manu Tuilagi!
Bath have pulled ahead as the leading Premiership club in the race to sign England star Henry Arundell with the Telegraph reporting they have tabled an offer, in conjunction with the RFU as a hybrid contract, which trumps the offer from his current club Racing 92.
