As I look ahead at almost a full year left to accomplish much, I am taking some time to look back at some all-stars who left indelible marks on education excellence, on opportunity and innovation.
Just so excited to gather the
@YassPrize
family together again over the next few weeks in our road shows, 2023 launch and innovation summits. Happy Friday, friends. This will put a smile on your face!
I'll share it again.
The creator, lead writer and co-producer of
@AbbottElemABC
@quintabrunson
is from West Philly and attended charter schools her entire education. She reportedly loved it at the time, heaped praise on it. Once upon a time.
Guess money talks.
Telling the CDC to change their guidance is helping to reopen schools? The talking point is getting old,
@rweingarten
. Your loyalty is to unions, not education. That long time fact is now clear to the world now.
"College rankings don’t determine students’ value or worth — so we should encourage them to explore their options. Sadly, it took an ugly cheating scandal to expose the nation’s brand-name obsession."
#CollegeAdmissionsScandal
Successful teachers don’t talk like this nor disparage children.
Great teachers want people like this out of the classroom. But they’ll never leave because unions protect them.
What percent of students are going to be behind?
“We don’t know but we can deal with their well-being and help them get their mojo back.”
@rweingarten
tells
@ChrisCuomo
3 times that we have to help kids get their mojo back.
That’s what she thinks her job is.
Sick.
Enjoyed joining
@foxandfriends
this morning to discuss how unions are using uncertainty around school reopening as a bargaining chip to try to fulfill a liberal policy wish list. Families need school choice options now!
Boy do I love this guy.
@RileyMooreWV
“We got a bunch of out-of-state, high-flying trial attorneys out in New York and California trying to take something away from some of the poorest people in the country,” the state treasurer, Riley Moore, said.
"Many teachers unions, by contrast, have been fighting to stay at home. The difference is one of incentives. Public schools get their funding regardless of whether they open their doors."
Chill.
Education change doesn’t happen in a few elections. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
It will take more than a few years to unravel a 150yr + institution which rewards bureaucracy.
We’ve been at this for 30 years. It’s a long game, not for the faint of heart.
Schools are essential, you $##*&%! There are thousands operating safely across the country, esp private and charter. You can't universally just close them without regard for whether are doing it right!
This is beyond exciting!!!!!!! So pysched to see
@selmekki
on a major news program. His center was one of our first investments as part of the new
@STOP4ed
effort before it was fully stood up. More need to support
@CenterBlackEd
.
According to a study, just one teacher of color in 3rd through 5th grades reduces a student of color’s chances of dropping out before graduation by up to 39%. Yet, Black men make up just 2% of teachers in America. Tonight, we take a closer look at one man’s solution.
Yet more evidence from the most over-studied "reform" in the nation shows charter schools succeed. Will facts convince those who want them to go away? I doubt it. But at least parents will listen.
Charter school reading cost-effectiveness advantages by city:
Camden: +92%
Indianapolis: +78%
Denver: +55%
New Orleans: +51%
DC: +45%
San Antonio: +19%
Memphis: +6%
"We found that school districts in locations with stronger teachers’ unions were substantially less likely to reopen in person even after we controlled for differences in local demographic characteristics." -
@DeAngelisCorey
with
@rickhess99
We did a study many years ago that found 40% of all public school teachers in urban areas sent their kids to private schools. This is nothing new. And it’s great they have the option. Tragic most others don’t.
This is a signal to
@teachcardona
- Don’t even think about messing with us.
Where’s the media indignation at special interests buying their way into the WH?
Crickets.
The "record plunge" on
@NAEP_NCES
#NationsReportCard
is a continuation of bad education policy, pandemic or not.
1 out of 3 students can't do math or read at grade level. 1 out of 4 aren't even at minimal, basic levels.
This is academic malnourishment.
BREAKING:
@massteachers
secures demand that kids start 2 wks later Sept 15 to give them more time to prepare. Its boss tells news "We've not had a single minute during 13 weeks to reflect and revise" the crisis schooling we did in the spring. REALLY? What have you been doing?
In 2021 we were selected by
@YassPrize
as the most transformative work for students. I think the heart of
@StemuliStudios
is what caused us to win, "I'm here representing the future of Dallas and the voice of the next generation."
Pure coincidence that Randi Weingarten takes to the airwaves on 5/4 right before the
@nytimes
drops this on 5/5? I bet you're shocked to find there is gambling in this establishment too.
BREAKING:
@YassPrize
Founder Janine Yass announces the 6 runners-up to $1 mill Yass prize will now be doubled to $500K!
“We need you to grow more rapidly to give more students the education they deserve.”
Winners will be announced Dec 14 in NYC.
BIG NEWS: "A majority of [black] moms polled responded they are more likely to vote for candidates who support flexibility for parents to pick where their children go to school, including through public school choice or charter school and private school support."
@Morning_Edu
…
This is so distorted and wrong. Why would Hechinger ever give space to such perverse BS? Start looking at how redlining and traditional PS have created inequity, and how Blaine was the beginning. Please. We who believe in real opportunity will not stand for such untruths.
#1984
On my birthday 🎁 I offer my gratitude to all of you who put children - yours and others - ahead of ego and adult jobs. I am truly blessed to know so many of you across the globe! Saluti!
Why apply for the $1 mill
@YassPrize
?
“If you're committed to wanting to be one of the change makers of the future in education, this is the place for you, not only because of the capital, but because of the knowledge that comes from bringing this diverse group of people…
Very interesting 🧐
#NAEP
@NAEP_NCES
No significant change in 4th grade reading scores in the two states AZ & FL that offer families the most schooling opportunities outside of public ed. AZ remained consistent in 8th as well.
My survey on education after COVID-19 received 1,330 responses
Here are the percentages of students transferring to homeschooling from each sector:
Traditional Public: 15%
Private: 16%
Charter: 13%
(1/6) Yes, Quinta! It was a trad'l school but it's now a charter for a good reason! Harrity elem was taken over by Mastery to revive it. You gave them books last year..acknowledging charters are underfunded (while then criticizing people who make up the deficit. )...
When equity is everything that we hear, it truly baffles me that those who fight so hard for it are the same ones who are so strongly opposed to Parental Choice!
What could be more fair than supporting every Iowa student equally?
@pitbull
surprises us here
#NCSC19
because he’s “the kid that no one believed in...” and he helped found the SLAM Charter School to make sure that fewer kids experience that.
#charterschoolswork
Beyond disappointing. This piece ignores the millions of lessons happening daily with heroic teachers and parents, including the poor. Cited “research” that’s limited & not at all related to the current crisis. Talk to the people not academics.
"The Court holds that the application of the provision of the state constitution barring aid to religious schools discriminated against religious schools and the families whose children attend or hope to attend the in violation of the free exercise clause."

Predicting this will rank right up there with The Help and Hidden Figures In profiling courageous women of color who fought for civil rights — and won!!
I am so excited for tonight’s premiere of
@missvirginiamov
, the movie based on the story of my amazing friend
@virginiawalden
. One person can truly make a positive difference in this world, and Virginia did!
#schoolchoice
The Los Angeles Teachers Union just struck a deal with their district.
The teachers will get to create their own work schedules
The teachers will only have to work 4 hours each day
The teachers won't be required to do any video lectures
The teachers won't lose any pay.
I wasn’t happy about his winning but it took
@TommyThompsonWI
to be governor to take Polly Williams’ vision for Milwaukee school choice to be realized -
@HowardLFuller
And that’s how unity looks.
@SchoolChoiceNow
It’s pathetic when fewer than 20% of Philadelphia students can even read, write or spell at grade level that there’s a show on television that has the nerve to criticize the schools that succeed, and the people that help them. This has TEACHERS UNION written all over it.
The great news for parents, teachers and citizens in Arizona? While
@katiehobbs
gave what you'd expect - an anti-ed choice speech rewarding the union that got her elected, parents have more power than ever before. They won't let it be taken away. Right
@ClarkRimsza
@_janellewood
?
Miss Virginia and me. Can't wait to see the movie in just a few minutes at the Washington, DC premiere. Thank you for coming to the Press Club to be on Reality Check today!
@virginiawalden
#MissVirginia
I’m so sick of pundits weighing in on
#gunviolence
who don't understand that low-literacy levels are linked to increased mental illness, violence, and crime—literacy rates in America’s public schools have been 📉 as gun violence 📈.
Coincidence? I don’t think so.
#IDEAhearings
“You’ve seen the data. Our children are not learning. Our children are our most precious assets. It is national security issue when our children cannot read and write.”
@WinsomeSears
@ALEC_states
“It is time for a change. Education choice is the new Brown v Board.”
"12 years of education is no longer enough to compete... so we'll add 4 years... "
How precisely do we get from 30% proficient to 90% if we just add inputs, not focus on what actually happens in schools?
We don't.
Wow. THIS interview with
@SRuhle
...she takes teachers' union leader
@rweingarten
to the mat for opposing

A big thank you to the educators and leaders who seek to do better for kids by doing the hard work of starting and leading
#charterschools
when students had no other options for a great education. You are millions strong and deserve our gratitude.
And yes this is the only rationale conclusion that honest people can make. As politicians and pundits continue to debate the issue and gaze at their navels...children suffer. Parents won’t let that happen.
#FundFamilies
(not failure)
Won't you ask he and those who support it all why it ONLY excludes K-12? Because parents of babies and big kids are smart enough to choose but someone we lose our brains when our kids are regular school-age??
OR...you're probably saying to yourself, " it's the unions, stupid."
An interesting thing about education politics is that Joe Biden is proposing a massive expansion of "school choice," but no one realizes it. Free community college, universal pre-k, child tax credit (aka a lightly regulated education saving account) — all school choice!
I can't keep up on my feed. Just focussed on making the 2022
@YassPrize
and STOP Awards Initiative the most impactful effort in education innovation history. That's all. 😉
PS Not hard when you have great material, scores of extraordinary leaders. We just find them.
Georgia received $2.6 BILLION in additional federal “covid relief” for K-12.
Now "Republican"
@SpeakerRalston
is KILLING a school choice bill to give 4,000 families access to $6,000 to fund students instead of systems.
Imagine blocking school choice as a Republican in 2022.
And we're off! First day of the
@YassPrize
virtual accelerator! Awardees & applicants audit so all benefit. Kicking off with a primer...next up this afternoon -
@salkhanacademy
!
I was not aware that inanimate objects could “hurt”
Let’s get more clear about this word which they have gotten away with using forever
It means they - the people vested in system - can’t just earn money for not having students. Right?
Not a fad. Have seen 1000s more apps
@YassPrize
.
"Currently approximately 125,000 microschools exist across the country...according to
@donsoifer
of the National Microschooling Center."
Watch the video when
@Lily_NEA
reads a litany of teacher complaints including the “tarded” kids.
And you all were worried about
@BetsyDeVosED
? Did you ever hear her say anything mean about a child?
Thank you, Alyssa. We appreciate your involvement, along with
@MeekMill
@SteveForbesCEO
and so many others who joined us and are united to support students, no matter what their other differences.

Honored to MC the $1 Million
@YassPrize
celebration! Last night educators from all over the country came to NYC to celebrate innovative approaches to education reform. Students deserve optionality & access to a world class education that meets them where they are!
Congratulations Biden team. You just allowed one of the last remaining objective govt agencies to become political.
@WSJ
reports on
@AFTunion
power grab and CDC
The super smart Jay Mathews nails it : “...I don’t know how he did it with such an explosive topic, but his resulting book is a work of genius. It is revealing, moving and fair. “
Well done

So here is the most amazing thing.
This guy, Boston teacher, likes responding to my tweets claiming charter schools are discriminatory.
Yet he works at Boston Latin Academy that requires an exam for entrance.
Isn't that just the biggest crock?? Choice for me, not for thee!
There has to be some penalty for this... somewhere. The only thing that makes school districts like this act is if there is a stick, because clearly the carrot doesn't work.
The Oklahoma State Board of Education closed all public schools, including VIRTUAL charter schools.
That makes no sense at all.
Unless they realized that families would flock to these online options?🤔
Biden Admin launches attack on
#charterschools
, setting in motion more rules intended to constrain their numbers & enrollment masking it as accountability when it's nothing of the sort. It was only a matter of time. Goal is to make charters look like systems, as if that works.
Los Angeles Teachers Union Strikes again, calling it a “worker walkout.” Nope it’s a strike.
Unprecedented local and federal funding and fewer students to teach. And we wonder why superintendent turnover is so high and parent trust so low.
Oh shoot - they are telling me to hush. Tell you what. I promise to hush, and let you off the hook from teaching - even remotely - if you'll support giving parents the money directly that schools are being paid to educate. Deal?
Can you believe it? A sitting governor with a state whose education has improved by more than 30 spots out of 50 since comprehensive choices were made available wants to cut them?
Hell hath no fury like a parent scorned... Go Parents!
Opening day of session in AZ! A huge thank you to our ESA families in Arizona, republican legislators and the freedom caucus! We had a massive showing at our rally and press conference today in support of Empowerment Scholarships!

SAT scores decline. Again.
Politico reports that fewer students took it and only 45% of test takers meet benchmarks.
Wait, and the unions want to deprive children of education even longer?
