Our senior reporter

A young girl didn’t want to slaughter the goat she raised for 4H. The state senator who bought the goat at auction agreed to let it live out its days eating weeds. But sheriff’s deputies drove 500 miles to kill the goat and teach a 9-year-old a lesson.
Wow, this great story by
@SalHernandez
struck a nerve with a lot of you! Please support your local news outlets, like the
@latimes

@sacbee_news
in California, so they can continue doing important time-consuming work like combing through goat-related court documents.
Actual Arizona reporters are still being kept out of the stadium a few blocks north of the state capitol where ballots are being counted. But conspiracy-mongering OANN, running a livestream, is publishing baseless claims from unnamed "officials" that they found "systemic fraud."
@DoleBryce
Condolences in advance for when the NYT inevitably rips off your story and then you have locals sharing the NYT story to ask why local news isn’t covering that issue 🙃
Hi, local Arizona political reporter here. IDK why
@CNN
decided to publish a story tonight on a bill that died yesterday, but I can assure you that there are no current bills moving through the
#azleg
to let the legislature pick presidential electors.
Arizona lawmakers are debating a new set of voting bills — including one that would allow lawmakers to review election results "if needed" and would grant the legislature the power to pick the state's presidential electors
New: The
@BrennanCenter
is asking the Department of Justice to deploy federal election monitors to the
@ArizonaAudit
. Letter cites concerns about the facility's security, use of UV lights and plans to contact voters.
Lots of confusion about what doxing is, so I’m gonna get a muppet to help explain.
Publishing a photo of Ernie at an event and naming him in the caption = NOT DOXING
Posting “Ernie lives at 123 Sesame Street, his phone number is 123-456-7890 and his email address...” = DOXING
I don’t think anyone reading this is under the delusion that the teen realtor writing for a partisan site is a real reporter... but that footage of him chasing and yelling at Secretary Hobbs was both frightening to watch as a woman and such a departure from how journalism works.
Voters like this GOP strategist who received an early ballot by mail but opted to vote in person will see notices that their mail ballots were cancelled. The in-person vote counted. This has nothing to do with Sharpies; it's all about making sure everyone only votes once.
having to wear a mask while shopping again is annoying. I hope the ~52% of Maricopa County residents who haven’t been vaccinated yet will get their shots so we can get transmission rates down and get back to something closer to normal
A day later, I can’t stop thinking about this threat from a state senator. Obviously she doesn’t actually have the power to imprison anybody, but the idea that the state of Arizona would jail federal officials for trying to enforce federal laws is some antebellum-era stuff
Some news: I’m headed back to Oregon! Starting in two weeks, I’ll be helping launch
@statesnewsroom
’s new affiliate newsroom in Salem. Really excited to get back to the state I fell in love with a few years ago and bother a whole new batch of politicians.
After an insane 23.5 hours in a moving truck towing a car, my dad, cat and I safely made it to Salem and are unpacking boxes in the nicest apartment I’ve ever had. Truly cannot believe my luck
Maricopa County board chairman
@jacksellers
sent senators a photo of pallets of ballots loaded on a truck and a letter asking where the county is supposed to drop them off. Despite subpoenas, the Senate isn’t sure what to do with 2.1 million ballots it demanded.
The

something they don’t teach in journalism school is that you’ll have sleepless nights whenever you have to write a potentially life-ruining story about somebody, no matter how confident you are that you reported only the available facts
“Everybody went through a full background check, made sure there was nothing on social media or other details that showed any strong opinions one way or another.” - Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan describing how they chose counters. How did
@anthonykernAZ
make that cut?
Biggest takeaway from that AZ audit press conference: the contrast between the folks running this, who said “I don’t know” or shrugged at many simple questions, and the current and former election officials I’ve talked to in Arizona, Oregon and Iowa could not be more stark.
I don’t know why anyone needs to hear this, but if a politician tries to avoid you by ducking into a bathroom, you can just wait outside. They have to leave at some point. You don’t need to traumatize other women by sending men and/or people filming into a restroom.
I broke the cardinal rule of never reading comments, especially not on trash fake news websites, but readers of a certain conspiracy-peddling site were musing about how they want Arizona journalists to “take a dirt nap” or receive “vaccines” of “hot lead.” I’m actually shaken.
I keep thinking I’m done being surprised, but seeing one of Arizona’s two major political parties asking if its followers are willing to die for a baseless conspiracy did it.
A senator who might be unaware that I'm still in the gallery read this tweet aloud to mock it. Whatever, my job requires being here, and I'll do that job even if it's the middle of the night or my car is in the shop. But the people's business should be done in daylight.
Good afternoon from the Arizona Senate, which plans to vote on bills protecting gun stores from lawsuits and making sure you can take hydroxychloroquine (provided every Republican is here today).
Unsettling photo shared by a candidate for the Arizona state Senate. But those aren't Trump ballots (or "ballets") discarded in CA, TX or PA. They're boxes of mail a disgruntled postal worker threw out of his truck in New Jersey in August 2018.
If there aren’t good birds outside, I’m going to try watching some laws try to get made again today. Maybe it will make more sense than last time I tried to watch
Also, the rules media agreed to follow don’t have restrictions on showing workers’ faces. As a former lawmaker whose name is on many of those ballots and who has been a key figure in the “Stop the Steal” movement, Anthony Kern’s presence in that room is certainly newsworthy.
Under agreement with your attorney,media was given wider access with the promise they would not zoom in on workers faces or the ballots Some media members have violated that agreement
When voters complained about sharpies last November,
@GeneralBrnovich
opened an investigation.
When
@SecretaryHobbs
asked him to investigate whether Cyber Ninjas are breaking state laws, he said the media reports she cited “does not meet the standard of a credible allegation.”
every time I write or read the phrase “Arizona-style audit,” I’m a little sad the state isn’t known for something more fun. New York and Chicago have pizza, Kansas City and Texas have barbecue and we have UV lights and color-coded spinning tables
Not gonna share despicable tweets from a troll account, but I do want to pause today to acknowledge
@JenAFifield
’s tireless dedication to covering every facet of the Senate’s ongoing audit. There’s a ton going on in AZ politics, and I feel better knowing Jen’s on the audit beat.
Because some of you need this spelled out: graphic details of a sexual assault can be triggering, particularly for survivors of sexual abuse. Warning people that they may see such a report online is about letting survivors protect themselves, not protecting an accused perpetrator
Here’s Arizona’s newest state Senator-elect falsely spreading claims that cities are stealing an election. Counting votes is proceeding as normal, with many safeguards in place to prevent fraud.
A couple months before he started his first run for office,

Senate President Fann said today that the final audit report will go first to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee's vice chair is having a very normal day here on twitter dot com
Elections director in Arizona's third largest county, a hotbed of election denialism with about 285,000 voters: "In my career, I have never been subject to the ridicule, disrespect, intimidation and attacks on my reputation and ethics that I have endured in these past months."
OANN, of course, is still around doing the livestream and with unfettered access. So, basically, it seems like there’s one set of (restrictive) rules for local and national nonpartisan media in the
#azauditpool
and another for right-wing outlets like OANN and Gateway Pundit.
“Arizona should have a big Capitol building so no one does press conferences outside in the summer” is a hill I would die on if I weren’t so busy dying of heat stroke at a press conference outside
NEW: Sen. Wendy Rogers' former assistant has filed a complaint alleging Rogers berated him about his weight, his sister's sexuality and his aunt's politics, harassed him while he was on medical leave, spit in his face and almost slammed a door on his hand
The Senate is on the floor with a whole stack of budget amendments. And
@WendyRogersAZ
brought Washington Reps. Jesse Young and Robert Sutherland, who want to try an Arizona-style audit in their very blue state.

@SecretaryHobbs
’ office has a scathing response to
@GeneralBrnovich
investigating Sharpies.
“To the extent you may be confronted with political issues like this one in the future, the Secretary encourages you to ...maintain, rather than undermine public confidence...”
Aaaaand the Senate Chief of Staff kicked me out. The 15-year-old kid who founded a chapter of far-right group Turning Point USA gets to stay and watch today’s caucus meeting, though.
The Senate came to the floor at 10 today and is headed to caucus, then back to the floor. Time to see whether they’ll follow their own rules and have open caucuses this week
I’ll get an article up tomorrow for the folks who don’t do Twitter threads, but the top line is that Republicans put together a shadow committee with the idea of proving corruption and instead heard from a bunch of pissed-off Oregonians who want the walkout to end.

I’ve had plenty of elected officials run away when I wanted to ask them questions but this was the first time one ever announced “I’m running away” as he did it, so achievement unlocked, I guess? 🤷🏼♀️
UPDATE: Phoenix PD comms director told me state Sen. Tony Navarrete, D-Phoenix, was arrested on suspicion of molestation.
We'll have more details once he's fully booked and charged.
1. The state senator from northern Arizona is back to tweeting about her love for traitors who took up arms against the US
2. Wouldn’t a real fan of the Dukes of Hazzard — someone who watched for the antics and not the car’s name or paint job — know how to spell “Hazzard”?
I spent six hours volunteering at Phoenix Muni and picked up a sunburn, gross sweaty bangs, lots of pleasant interactions with strangers and a shot! If you can spare some time to volunteer and help other Arizonans get vaccinated, please do it
Rep.

Sen.

Worth noting that the FDA cautions AGAINST using it to prevent or treat Covid.
my publisher asked if I was going to go get drinks after work to celebrate Twitter finally recognizing I’m a real person after almost a decade of sharing news on this site, and I told him I was celebrating by going to a 5 p.m. audit press conference.
#partylikeajournalist
This kind of sexism from an elected official (or has-been, in this case) is sadly not a novel experience. Neither, unfortunately, is mischaracterizing communication: I called him once as part of a round of calls to current and former legislators about the bourbon-hoarding scandal
About two and a half hours in to this hearing, we heard a hypothetical about someone’s sheep eating a ballot. If you or someone you know has had a sheep eat your ballot, I would very much like to hear your story.
I made it out of Arizona for the first time since before Covid, slept under the stars last night and went on a 9-mile hike this morning, so it was a good weekend
Senate president
@fannkfann
is on KTAR’s Mike Broomhead show and starts her interview by saying the media are falsely tying her audit to “Stop the Steal” and “Q-Anon.” The auditors themselves are linked to Stop the Steal
GOP senators have now been in their improperly closed caucus for an hour. In any other year, I'd know what they were talking about — but this year the lawmakers could have spent the past hour playing beer pong on the long conference table for all anyone knows.
Hi, I’m your

reporter this afternoon. The coliseum is fairly deserted right now. Not sure how the worker/observer shift changes correlate to the pool shift changes, but there are maybe 50 people on the floor and work only appears to be happening at the red tables
If

Sometimes, especially when the news looks bad, subjects don’t want to talk, but you still have to try to get them to comment. You may end up following them out of meetings, knocking on their front door or waiting outside work. But you’re polite about it.
One of the most concerning aspects of OAN’s involvement in the audit is that some local GOP leaders are genuinely convinced this is journalism. Real reporters don’t fundraise for political causes, toss softball questions and pose for pictures with subjects

Republicans signed onto a letter to Arizona’s Republican House Speaker asking that he ensure “all legal votes are counted for the Presidential and Congressional races ... and all illegal votes for the same are rejected.”
@FannKfann
Are you comfortable with how Bennett (or whoever’s running the account because he says it’s not him) is using this account created for an audit you authorized? Is it OK for someone working for the Senate to call Secretary Hobbs “Kooky Katie” and make fun of death threats?
Sen.

You develop a thick skin and a sense of gallows humor pretty quickly in this job, and it’s easy to laugh at or ignore most of the trolls. But I’ve never hated anyone enough to wish actual harm on them, and I can’t understand how fellow humans can think that way.

OAN “reporter”
@christina_bobb
losses her cool when approached by local AZ reporter
@JenAFifield
who has been continually pointing out that the OAN reporter has been personally fundraising for the audit.
Either Bennett’s much more comfortable now or someone else got the keys to this account, but this is super-confrontational messaging from something sold as a government exercise. You don’t see ADOT telling people with questions to get their eyes checked
Spotted in the House parking lot: freshman Rep. Quang Nguyen, R-Prescott, has at least two bumper stickers for the Oath Keepers, an anti-government militia group. Oath Keepers in the

My unexpectedly outside neighbor definitely overheard me having a full conversation with my cat in the doorway about whether he was trying to go to work too, what he would even do there and whether he could be a good reporter, so anyway I have to move now.
Nothing to see here, just the presiding officer of a state legislative chamber publicly musing criminal charges against journalists for doing their jobs.
Achievement unlocked, I guess? If this senator (or Leach or Ugenti-Rita because I’m now blocked by a solid 10 percent of the Senate) says something worth writing about for the Yellow Sheet Report or Cap Times, I trust you’ll let me know
There are just two and a half days left until I get to jump on a plane and leave Arizona for a few days, and I would greatly appreciate it if AZ politics would chill out just a bit so I have a reason to take that return flight
