Iceland’s distinctive wool sweater is the very essence of winter coziness. It’s known as a lopapeysa and is a national icon. We photographed people wearing their sweater and asked about the stories behind them. Do you have one? Share your photo with us.
"It's hard to believe the timing of it. The opportunity to experience an eruption 800 years in the making during a tiny window of unplanned time, post quarantine & between work is surreal. Guess after dedicating 15 years & 43 trips to Iceland you're bound to score."

4 days and 42 flight hours from the top of the world to the bottom, and home again. Last week an Icelandair polar express covered the globe to pick up some scientists and take them home to Norway from their Antarctic base. Ice is, after all, part of our DNA.
On December 1st, 1918 Iceland became a sovereign state. To celebrate 100 years of sovereignty, we painted one of our aircraft in the colors of the Icelandic flag. We look forward to our shared journey into the future.

Today, Icelandic women stopped working at 2:55 pm and gathered in town squares to demand equality. The Women’s Strike started on this day in 1975, and for decades it has been a guiding light on Iceland’s road to equality.
Today, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, former president of Iceland, celebrates her 90th birthday. In 1980, she was the first woman in the world democratically elected as president. Her passion still matters and her boldness has shaped generations. We are thankful and proud of her legacy.
We're so proud of the Icelandic women's football team, which qualified to compete in the European championships for the 4th time in a row! For a small population, we like surprising our larger competitors. We can't wait to cheer the team at the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 in England.
We are proud to have received equal pay certification! Despite Iceland being the most gender-equal country in the world, a gender pay gap still exists. Iceland is the first country to make it mandatory for companies to implement an equal pay standard:
When we say ‘memories mean the world to us’, here’s a beautiful example: Mr Reindl and his pregnant wife traveled to Iceland 30 years ago. The Leif Eriksson terminal at KEF airport inspired them to name their son Erik.
The Icelandair staff is a large and very diverse group of people. We wouldn’t want it any other way! Which is why we decorated with the colors of the rainbow today to support the LGBTQ+ people and celebrate the beauty of diversity. We’re all on the same team!
Today is Öskudagur, or Ash Wednesday. On this day Icelandic children dress up and sing songs for candy and other sweet treats. Some dress up as Spiderman, others as a ghost. But Hanna here is a cabin crew member of Icelandair and we think that is super cool! Credits: Thelma Smára
Florida, we sure like you! We just announced that we are increasing our flights to Tampa and Orlando - starting next fall. We'll double our frequency into Tampa to 4 times a week and from 5 times a week to daily flights to Orlando!
Happy Women’s Day from Iceland! Today is Konudagur in Iceland – a day when we pay tribute to the women in our lives. At Icelandair, it’s a day for us to pay tribute to our wonderful female staff, and to reaffirm our commitment to closing the gender gap:
Happy Beer Day from Iceland! Today we celebrate the 30-year anniversary of beer becoming legal again in Iceland, on March 1, 1989, after a 74-year ban. To celebrate Beer Day, we want to provide some tips on Iceland’s brewing landscape:
Most of our fleet stays on the ground, but in past weeks we’ve flown home many passengers, and transported medical equipment to Iceland. Thanks to our staff who don’t stay home, so that you can get home. Please stay home & stay safe. Photo:

Iceland’s wool sweater, the lopapeysa, has become a national icon and the tradition of wearing homemade woolen knitwear goes back centuries. We photographed people wearing their sweater and asked about the stories behind them. Do you have a lopapeysa?
