Omoro District where I come from does not have a hospital. The highest level facility is Lalogi Health Center 4 where I did my elective from. The district is served by two doctors.

Whether it has been the practice for decades or not, a shift where a medical doctor works for 36 hours without sleep is very unhealthy and puts the patients at risk of medical errors. This has to change.

COLORECTAL CANCER (A THREAD) Pele (82 yrs, RIP) and Chadwick Boseman (43 yrs, RIP) both passed on due to colorectal cancer. Whereas colorectal ca is a killer in Uganda, few people know about this! About 1,740 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in Uganda in 2019 alone.

At the @TUFH Conference, I presented our findings on the experiences of patients with COVID-19 who were managed at home. Psychosocial and economic concerns were common (obviously). Implementation research is a potential solution prior to rolling out such policies. #TUFH2023

In Uganda, one is not allowed to give an opinion on a legal case (because it belongs to lawyers) but when it comes to health matters, everyone suddenly has a right to give an opinion and the doctor is wrong. HYPOCRISY!

Poor countries are spending a lot of money to train health workers for rich countries. This trend will continue if low-income countries do not appreciate that retention of health workers require an intentional effort to improve their remuneration and work environment.

Also published yesterday, led by @kibirigedavis , we found that 13.8% of patients on TB treatment had DM. Older age (>40 years) increased the odds of DM in TB. TB/DM comorbidity is increasingly being recognized! Screen DM patients for TB, and vice versa.

@DrPanMD @PhatTanNguyenMD @acgme Thank you for your concern. I think it shouldn't only be about supporting "suffering resident physicians". It should be about rethinking the system to prevent the "suffering" in the first place. There's already enough evidence on the burden of mental illness among physicians.
