From me: nearly a dozen former employees and cadets at the South Carolina Youth Challenge Academy describe a facility in shambles.
Routine physical and verbal abuse. Routine violence. And now, a criminal investigation by the Department of Defense.

Sen. Lynn Hutchings, R-Cheyenne, argued that without the death penalty, Jesus Christ would not have been able to die to resolve the sins of mankind, and therefore capitol punishment should be maintained.
"...the officer was not just eating a burrito. He was driving through city streets and on Interstate 40 — with a prisoner in the back seat — at times steering his cruiser with his knee while he ate three burritos, one after another."

Is there a reason Stars & Stripes or Voice Of America haven't gotten similar treatment? They're both actually funded by the U.S. government.
State's private school voucher program ruled unconstitutional.
"After we clear away the window dressing, we can see the Act funnels public funds to the direct benefit of private schools. This is what our constitution forbids."
Opinion: Candace Eidson v. SC Dept. of Education: Petitioners have challenged the constitutionality of 2023 Act No. 8 (S.39), also known as the Education Scholarship Trust Fund.
Some (sudden) and bittersweet news, but this was actually my last week at the Post and Courier.
I'll be headed over to Newsweek later this month to take a position as a Senior Politics Reporter.
The opportunity was a surprise, but one I've hoped a long time for.
Wrote a little thing for the
@washingtonpost
about the race here in Wyoming. Nothing new here for those of you in the state, but it was cool an editor of one of the nation's biggest newspapers gave a small town dude a shot.
Elias oversaw counter efforts by the DNC and Biden campaign against Trump's election fraud claims. He is "watching" South Carolina's redistricting process after the release of maps that pack left-leaning precincts from the competitive 1st District into the deep blue 6th.
If this is real, Trump credited an order to send in U.S. attorneys and the FBI when "votes were being stolen by the corrupt election process in Broward County" as key to DeSantis' half-point win against Andrew Gillum in 2018.
The audit after was messy:
U.S. Congressman
@mattgaetz
has written a letter to
@ClemsonUniv
president James P. Clements after a viral video showing university staff working to disperse Clemson College Republicans who were canvassing outside the school's spring football game earlier this month.
Text:
I know he's been saying it for a long time, but there's something a little odd seeing the words "Mass Deportation Now" on signs waving back and forth to country music around the RNC convention floor.
Traveled to South Carolina's deep-red 4th Congressional District last week to check on something peculiar...
An upstart Democrat entering the final two months of the election with more cash on-hand than a sitting United States Congressman.
On weighing in, David Gosar, a 57-year-old attorney in Cheyenne, said the siblings couldn't stay silent any longer.
"None of us are doing this for publicity. None of us even want to do it," David Gosar said.
BREAKING:
@JoeBiden
wins Wyoming's Democratic Caucuses with 72.2 percent of the vote. He will take 10 delegates to the national convention.
@BernieSanders
finishes with 27.8 percent, and will take four.
Lots of SC media news recently... here's more.
After just over a year in national news, I'm back in my old seat at the
@postandcourier
covering the statehouse.
Interesting to see the other side, but I truly believe the most crucial work happens at this level. Glad to be back.
Shealy said her political career is not over. If possible, she said she would consider a run for governor or even for congress.
But first, she said she wants to unseat the men she blamed for her loss.
"I'm hunting them down like the animals they are."
At risk of getting scooped on my own life, some personal news...
Starting next month, I'm taking my act over to
@WyoFile
. My first day is, coincidentally, the first day of the 2021 legislative session.
Today is my last at WyoFile. Loading up a UHaul and beginning the trip to S. Carolina for my new role with the
@postandcourier
's fabulous statehouse team.
Taking a social media hiatus while I transition this account to an SC one. Thanks for everything Wyo, I'll never forget ya.
Sen. Bouchard said the death penalty could be used as a tool, and a means to keep the state's justice system from turning into that seen in other states. He then noted that states like California -- in some cases -- have allowed inmates to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
NPR can confirm the death of longtime soccer sportswriter Grant Wahl (

A bill to impose an abortion ban in South Carolina is likely paused indefinitely after Sen. Brad Hutto threatened to walk out of today's Senate Medical Affairs Committee, robbing the Republican-dominated committee of a quorum.
They're now moving on w/ the rest of the agenda.
Slaughterhouse Five was required reading in one of my high school English classes freshman or sophomore year. Kurt Vonnegut himself is maybe one of the top five reasons I became a writer.

After 22 years in office, Sen. Enzi is retiring.

"What we're witnessing is an unprecedented effort by the Republicans to gain the polling averages and to create an impression of a red wave,"
@SimonWDC
told me earlier. "And it's all based on junk data and junk polling."
Latest:
"Heading into the primary elections, five Republican candidates raised $2.00 million compared to $37,686 raised by three Democrats."
Rogers raised $1,956,453 of the Republicans' total.
Lummis is making her signature in Congress as the most cryptocurrency-friendly legislator, and is already leading a caucus committed to increasing its legitimacy on the federal level.
All in good fun:
After months of speculation,
@Liz_Cheney
says she will not be running for U.S. Senate this morning.
"I believe I can have the biggest impact for the people of Wyoming by remaining in leadership in the House of Representatives and working take our Republican majority."
Story TK.
I, like the rest of you, was wondering the other day how Bloomberg managed to scoop the Wall Street Journal on the release of one of its own reporters from Russian captivity.
They quite literally broke an embargo everyone agreed to that was intended to assure their safety.
I don't know how much time -- if any -- some of these folks have spent in the rural west or any deep red area, but yelling at the president on national television is probably a dream for a lot of people, and only made her look cooler.
Democrats have little confidence in their own messaging, so they always default to GOP Outrage messaging. In a week, the only thing people will remember from SOTU was Boebert yelling during part of it.
After a candidate who has denied the results of the 2020 election won his Secretary of State primary in Wyoming, it looks like the Joint Corporations Committee has just approved a motion to draft legislation stripping the office's sole authority to oversee the state's elections.
The DNC's
@harrisonjaime
just wrapped up a press call eviscerating Republican Senators Tom Thillis and Pat Toomey for their absence on Biden nominees to the federal reserve board.
He said their inaction is an effort to "actively kneecap" Biden attempts to control inflation.

Cutting out of work early today to pack for session/prep for a weekend in the mountains, but this is my final day with the

on Monday.
I've already said it before, but I wanted to thank my colleagues for an amazing few years. See you around.
A crowd gathering outside the Capitol waiting for
@mattgaetz
to speak.
One man yelled at the crowd, called them "delusional." Drove off in his truck honking his horn, middle finger raised.
I wanted you to hear this directly from me. Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days in our history. And instead of holding accountable those responsible for that day, Nancy Mace caved and fell in line with her base.
It's time to send someone with an actual backbone to Congress.
Northern Arapaho tribal member Lynette Grey Bull -- who has been a leader in the state's efforts on missing and murdered indigenous women -- just announced at the Wyoming Democratic Convention this afternoon she is running for U.S. Congress.
The South Carolina Democrats have released a statement ahead of a meeting Wednesday on two abortion bills, including one that would treat an abortion as murder.
98 people signed up to comment, but the committee is limiting the hearing time to 2 hrs.
Wild ending to the 2024 session, the
@SCFreedomCaucus
killed a sweeping health department restructuring bill at the final minute using a basic procedural maneuver.
Sen Tom Davis, who led the bill, stormed out of the chamber, furious.
While members of the Baby Boomer generation represent just one-quarter of the state’s population, its members occupy nearly half of the available seats in the S.C. House of Representatives and nearly two-thirds of the state Senate.
On a conference call with reporters on the Lummis announcement. Rumored to potentially be taking on Liz Cheney, should she decide to run.
Lummis: "I have talked to Liz. I have made my decision, now she needs to make hers."
South Carolina has the 7th-most payday lenders per capita in the nation, which tend to proliferate in low-income, minority and military communities.
There are actually more payday lenders in South Carolina than there are McDonalds restaurants.
Tomorrow's newspaper:

Medicaid expansion... advances! That's a surprise.
Ayes: Furphy, McKeown (who spoke against it numerous times today) and Baldwin.
Nos: Bouchard, Hutchings.
Gonna livetweet Medicaid here.
@rothfuss
is sponsoring the bill and presenting it right now. Notes 38 states (plus D.C) throughout the country have expanded Medicaid, and none have chosen to undo it.
Basics, 50% federal match but, because of the CARES Act, we could get more.
Several hundred people are gathered outside of the statehouse to protest the leaked, draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade. More are coming by the minute.
Hey everybody! Pleased to announce I will be going on vacation and spending a week drinking beer, looking at big spruce trees and walking many miles in dirty boots.
That said, this will be my last night on this terrible website until Aug. 31. Later.☮️
Pete Gosar, who ran for governor in Wyoming in 2014, was interestingly not in this ad. He told the AP back then, of Paul: "I work on him daily. We'll get over to looking at things a little more liberally. We'll keep working on him."
Nearly three years in South Carolina and I will still never be used to "palmetto bug" season.
There was one in my mailbox when I went to check it earlier. I have since set it on fire.
Several administrations have failed to stall the construction of the pipeline, which is nearly completed.
Sen. Chris Murphy (who sits on foreign relations) captured the other side of the argument pretty well in this thread here.
1/ Nordstream 2 is bad for Europe, Ukraine and the U.S. But thinking America alone can stop a pipeline that is 98% complete is based in fantasy not reality. The deal Biden reached with Germany isn’t perfect, but it’s a good outcome under the circumstances.
Was trawling FEC filings and found a new PAC that formed earlier this month called "Protecting Wyoming Values."
"Interesting," I think to myself. "Wonder who's behind it."
So I tried to find out. Thread. 🧵
So... It appears shadowy Wyoming megadonor, Susan Gore, financed an espionage operation in Wyoming that tried to spy on the Democratic Party, the governor, and current speaker of the house Eric Barlow.
Clemson's Dabo Swinney and USC's Shane Beamer are here for a meeting of the House EPW Committee, where they're weighing a bill to expand SC's NIL laws.

Spoke with the Columbia Journalism Review for this quite illuminating piece about my old stomping ground.
Lots of new information I wasn't even really aware of, particularly on their rather troublesome climate coverage.
It's JFK records release day!
The National Archives are expected to release thousands of unreleased documents related to the Kennedy Assassination and his alleged killer, Lee Harvey Oswald.
I'm told they won't be out until 2 p.m. at the earliest. But here's what to watch...
The very factual Bill O'Reilly was in Wyoming recently, painting a picture of the "two Americas" on display in San Francisco and in Wyoming.
The dateline? Jackson Hole.
I can't make this up.
Today's my last day at the
@ithacatimes
. Thank you all for reading, and don't be alarmed if you see stories in future editions with my name on them... consider it unreleased material.
You can catch me over at the
@CSTribune
starting August 6.
My column:
Probably a good reminder that -- because the Senate does SCOTUS confirmations -- small conservative states have an outsize influence on the judiciary. The process is always political.
Touched on these themes around the time of the Kavanaugh confirmation.
Mace: "This has been one of the most in in depth investigations the House Oversight Committee has ever had in recent history. And I would hope that the media here today we'll put as much attention and interest and focus on this as they have a former president."
He's yelling now. Says people are irresponsible, spreading misinformation.
"Ask yourself if you feel better today about what is going on in this state than you felt in June or August when we were one of the lowest states."
"It's time Wyoming gets serious about what it's doing."
On the drive to work, I was thinking...
In the past 4 years, Ithaca pubs (non-student) produced three statehouse reporters (SD, WY, VA.), two writers w/ bylines in the NYT, a reporter at the Washington Post, and a reporter at the Houston Chronicle.
Not bad for a city of 30k.
Finally, in July, one of the hardest things I've ever written: my farewell column. I'll always love Ithaca, and the nearly four years I spent there were incredible. I owe that city a lot. It's a great town for young writers to grow up in.
I wanna get ahead of this before someone tries to make clickbait out of it.
In Jan., Wyoming had 209,231 registered Republicans. In Feb., that number fell to 203,961.
Is Wyoming experiencing the same GOP exodus other states saw after Jan. 6? Probably not.
Let me explain...
Woke up to six voicemails left between 5:11 a.m. and 5:43 a.m. containing numerous racial slurs and denigrating comments about the LGBTQ community.

Forgot to mention but today is the one-year anniversary of me moving to Wyoming! Thank you all for reading so long, and very much appreciate everyone I've met on the way. People told me coming here from Upstate NY would be a culture shock, but it felt like home right away.
