One problem with K-12 education in Hong Kong is how things are graded. You begin every assignment from a state of perfection:100. You then lose points for every error you make, until at the end of the assignment or test you arrive at your final grade. 1/

Important point. Historians have almost no control over shrinking resources, but *historians themselves* control where cuts are made, and discipline has overwhelmingly sacrificed pre-1900 history. In US, probably more historians of 1970s hired in last decade than of whole 17th C.

1) everyone cried, even if you weren't sad, because you had to 2) anecdotally, some people actually wanted to laugh so they put their head down on desk/covered their face and pretended to cry when they were actually just really happy

One Question: during the mourning ceremonies of Mao Zedong in 1976: did Jiang Qing shed tears?

My best HK education crying story is a couple or five or six years old boys outside KLT MTR on verge of tears with their mom yelling at them in English "Listen to me! Where you get in now will determine the fate for the rest of your life!"

For a second there I thought these were the ones. Also, blame Michelle Obama. Also, if you see students crying in the streets, you’ll understand why

Japan is fairly friendly towards kids. For a place that actually hates kid go to Korea. Been rejected from restaurants multiple times just because we were bringing a young one (no we hadn't even stepped foot in it)

Japan has a problem. Japan hates kids. It’s a very difficult and expensive to raise them here. Yet they need young people to pay tax to fund pensions. Japan hates immigrants. It’s hard to ignore constant reminders of that. Yet they need skilled workers as the workforce retires.

I subscribe to Ho Ping-ti's claim in "Significance" that much of 20th century China is from the Qing, so it should really rank higher

After I grabbed the chair and put it in our line, magically, before the 30 mins was up, there was a bus! Turns out there was always a bus, they were just waiting for... I'm not sure what. More people? 3am to turn so they get paid an extra hour? I have no idea /19
