Today it was confirmed that Art History will be ‘phased out’ at the University of Kent – along with Anthropology, Journalism, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Music. What a tremendous loss.

Goodbye little Gothic cottage, and all of your benevolent birds and ghosts. You have been a lovely little home for six years, and I don’t know if I’ll ever live somewhere so beautiful again 🌻

Today is the darkest day of the year & the feast of St Thomas #otd who doubted Christ's resurrection. Here's a stunning c1260s Gothic wall painting @wabbey that boldly breaks w/ iconographic conventions to present his experience of faith through physical touch #lockdown #churches

Other forms quickly came into view– a sun, three more haloes, a cross beam– and suddenly I saw the whole 'thing': A damaged image of the Crucifixion from the age of Saint Louis. I started shaking. I knew I needed to put down the equipment, breathe slowly & lie down...

It’s been a dark day at our University, but a bright spot was our Gothic Art field trips to Canterbury Cathedral with some excellent first-year @UniKentHistory students. So proud! 💫

It’s #MotheringSunday here in the UK 💐 Here’s a lovely panel painting of Anne teaching the Virgin to read, made in c1330s for the Dominicans in Norwich and now displayed @museecluny - the rest of the altarpiece survives in the tiny church of Thornham Parva #medieval #gothic

I teach the ‘Art of Death’ @UniKentHistory @mems_ukc , which examines the visual culture of martyrs & the macabre from c150-1500. This is my fave tomb- in St Mary’s, Ewelme. It belongs to Alice de la Pole (d1475), Chaucer’s granddaughter #artinquarantine #arthistory #mdievalart 1/

I love this strange 15thc representation of the Seven Deadly Sins at St Peter's Church, Raunds – the mural shows woman poked by a skeleton, exploding into personifications of vices swallowed by demons #arthistory #medievaltwitter #sin

One more highlight from yesterday’s visit to the Met: The c1300 gilded Gothic statues of the Visitation from the convent of Katherinethal. As Mary greets cousin Elizabeth, their pregnant bellies shine with translucent rock crystal, alluding to the imminent birth of Christ & John

The tomb of Lady Lucy Stanley (d.1601) represents her at prayer... with her breasts exposed. She surrounded by her four daughters- they all died suddenly while visiting Walthamstow & they’re buried together here in St Mary’s. I’ve never seen a monument quite like this before...

On 11 August 1239, King Louis IX walked barefoot, & led a sacred precession of the Crown of Thorns to honour his acquisition. The Sainte-Chapelle, designed to enshrine the relic, was completed 9 years later- look closely & you’ll see 2 crowns on the towers #otd #medievaltwitter

I loved watching #TheGreenKnight @A24 – it announces a new aesthetic of medievalism, where bright hues co-mingle w/ the macabre in landscapes conversant w/ eco-criticism But I esp loved Guinevere's robe, adorned with dozens of votive offerings & pilgrims' badges #medievaltwitter

There’s a nearly complete scheme of mid-14thc murals in the chancel of St Mary’s, Chalgrove 50+ scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ flood the walls while long, tall saints overlook the windows #medieval #wallpaintings #gothic #churches #churching

My colleagues & I talked about how much we miss our offices today. We also shared the best-ever office environment we’ve had in our careers. Here’s mine (it’s a doozy): The S oratory of the Sainte-Chapelle, complete with internet AND 1240s/1860s stained glass windows 👑 #gothic

Founded c700 & covered in spolia, SS Maria e Donato in Murano has a stunning c1140 mosaic of Mary as intercessor. Look behind the high altar & you’ll see the triumphant display of gigantic vertebrae & ribs that belong to a Pleistocene cetacean #medievaltwitter #twitterstorians 🐋

Nine years ago today, I was extremely fortunate to rediscover a lost wall painting in the Sainte-Chapelle. I was 24. It was the 2nd year of my PhD and I had recently moved to Paris for my fieldwork in the Sainte-Chapelle. I had a hunch, confirmed by a recent find in the @laBnF ...

...to keep myself from fainting (/breaking anything). So I just laid there in disbelief for a minute or two before I collected myself, told the administratrice, phoned my supervisor, and sat down on the royal staircase, fighting back hot, happy tears.
