German word of the day is Wohlstandsverwahrlosung, a state of decay that results from having it too easy for too long, leading you to selfishly compare your own petty grievances &mediocre accomplishments to the pain &struggle of people who know the meaning of real problems.

Less than 14 months ago, I was rushed to hospital with a miscarriage. My husband was not allowed to be with me because of the Covid pandemic. Last night, we welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world and our family. Together. This year has been quite the journey. He is wonderful.

So, in summary, former PM @BorisJohnson casually told CNN that the German government wanted Ukraine to lose the war quickly, and the official spokesman of the German government just called him a liar in an official statement. Not the best day for UK-German relations, as days go.

The question is not whether "Britain is a corrupt country“. It is whether there is an adequate system in place to hold potentially corrupt MPs to account, and whether the PM just tried to dismantle it to protect his own. @BorisJohnson is changing the conversation. Again.

Easy to dismiss #DominicCummings as delusional, but here is the thing: it wasn’t a delusion.People voted for Brexit&Johnson. Cummings’ methods&ambition got him v.far indeed. So this interview isn’t laughable, it is not entertaining. It reveals a shocking state of British politics.

Look at the Capitol this evening. And the next time a politician derides democratic institutions, ridicules the rule of law, or blatantly distorts the truth, remember that this isn’t "just noise”. Words can turn into action. Action beyond the control of the person who spoke them.

I have a new rule: As soon as an author mentions the words “deep state”, “the elites”, “neoliberal” or “woke” , I stop reading. It saves so much time.

You were an independent nation before Brexit. The issue here is not your independence, but the safety of your population. If you can guarantee it without the EU procurement scheme, I am happy&relieved for the UK. But a break from the propaganda in times like these would be nice.

#Marr : Why hasn't UK taken part in EU ventilator scheme? Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove says there was "some confusion" over the issue, but adds there's "nothing we can't do as an independent nation" that being part of the scheme would've allowed

Dear U.K., Please stop talking about Philip Schofield, it is intensely annoying. There are other things happening in the world. Thank you. Me.

Dear British tabloids, you do realise that @donaldtusk was one of your best friends in the EU during the Brexit negotiations, do you? Probably not. Your loss.

German word of the day is Perfektionshemmung, the inhibition to start doing something out of an excessive and not infrequently misplaced desire to do everything perfectly, avoid risk and weigh up absolutely every conceivable outcome before you begin.

RIP "conservative“ party. When asked recently to name someone who has improved the political discourse in a constructive way, @RoryStewartUK was the only one I could think of. He reminded us that a sense of shame and seriousness are indispensable qualities for politicians.

It’s been a great privilege to serve Penrith and The Border for the last ten years, so it is with sadness that I am announcing that I will be standing down at the next election, and that I have also resigned from the Conservative Party.

The nationalist framing of the #COVID2019 response is annoying me. Sickness, solitude, grief &fear for your livelihood aren’t specifically German or British or French experiences. Nor does it take British or German or French values to get through this. It takes humanity.

The @DIEZEIT has published a letter to @bundeskanzler ,signed by a group of writers, academics &other public figures, arguing that supporting #Ukraine is a way of defending Germany‘s interests & of living up to historical responsibility. I am one of them./1

@iainmartin1 Arguing against Brexit is not the same as being anti-British. A deeply personal, offensive comment. You should apologise and delete. It is sad to see you stoop to this level.

Sophie was offered a way out by the Nazi prosecutor: to save her own life by distancing herself from her brother and her friends and what they stood for. She refused to betray them or her principles, and was executed. RIP

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the death of Sophie Scholl. An anti-Nazi political activist, she was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the LMU with her brother, Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine.

German leading newspaper @faznet : It is an unbelievale failure of british diplomacy to have expected that the EU would prioritize the interests of a leaving member over those of a remaining member, i.e. Ireland. They cannot in all seriousness have thought that. #backstop

There is a terrifying war in Europe, and the UK and the EU are on the same side. What does that mean in a post-Brexit world? It is complicated, but here is why I am *cautiously* optimistic that this *could* be a moment to start rebuilding UK-EU relations. Thread /1
