Living and cycling in Hackney since 2003, I want Hackney to be as safe and comfortable for me and my daughter to cycle here as it is in the Netherlands
In this ๐งตI will share before and after images from Amsterdam showing how the streets have been redesigned and how the city has changed from one designed around cars into one designed around people. First is Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat in 1988 and in 2023
Video I came across of someone driving along Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam in the 1960s and me cycling along the same street this year. Which do you prefer? Radical change in cities is possible!
These streets in De Pijp, Amsterdam have removed all street parking, except a few loading bays, and replaced with cycle parking, seating and greenery. You'll see the entrance to the new parking garage under the canal near the end of the video, where the cars have been removed to
Evolution of a Dutch street: already lovely, then one row of parking goes away, followed by full conversion to a bicycle street, with room for trees on both sides.
In Amsterdam they built a new school on this road, which had no cycling infrastructure, so they have made the road one way for cars and are currently constructing a bidirectional cycle track so children can safely cycle to school. Before image from Google and the street today
Cycling along a main road near Utrecht. The light turns red but it sensor detects I'm approaching on a bike so turns back to green and makes the cars wait longer
This is what the school run looks like in a city where the roads have been designed to ensure children can safely cycle to school. Imagine if they were all in cars clogging up the roads!
The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if youโre on a bike - get one on your head.
Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but Iโm still here ๐๐ป
Currently eating soup through a straw and being looked after by this gorgeous, tired nurse โค๏ธ

A traffic free Broadway Market is wonderful. I don't think I've ever seen a young child cycling alone here before but certainly not three within 30 seconds! Watch to the end to see how this makes me feel
The removal of cycle parking outside a school in Hackney, to replace it with car parking on the pavement, despite there already being car parking available on the road alongside

Building cycle tracks alongside busy rural main roads means children have the freedom to cycle long distances in the countryside side by side whilst sharing sweets
This Dutch sign was a new one for me. The cycle path is narrow so "racers are guests". Fast road bikes are allowed but as considerate guests to slower cyclists
When you remove through traffic from city centre streets emergency services can get to their destination much quicker. Also notice how many people cover their ears, Dutch fire engines are *really* loud.
"Woonerf" residential streets in the Netherlands. A one way system (with two way cycling) ensures these streets can't be used as rat runs by drivers. Trees, seating & street furniture ensures cars travel slowly & makes for pleasant streets where children can safely play & cycle
A main road in Amsterdam that can only be used by people on public transport, walking or cycling. This is what Clerkenwell / Theobalds Road could be like if out politicians were brave enough
One thing that is very noticeable in the Netherlands is the huge amount of elderly or people with mobility issues you see everywhere, all the time. The network of protected cycle tracks and low traffic neighbourhoods gives these people so much freedom
Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam is now bikes and trams only so you can hear the sounds of people chatting as they walk or cycle. A vision of what the Clerkenwell Boulevard could be like
A mum and her young daughter cycle to go shopping in Deflt city centre via protected cycle tracks along a main road, crossing via an underpass so no conflict with motor vehicles, onto a low traffic shopping street to a free staffed bicycle parking garage (open until 1am)
I'm not sure the person who made this FOI request about
@pedalmeapp
got the response they were hoping for. They're cheaper and quicker - other councils take note!
bicycle parking garage under the main train station in the Hague with the capacity to park 8,500 bicycles. Imagine how much space you'd need to park 8,500 cars!
Damn cyclists riding two abreast! Oh, hang on, I'm in a country where it's perfectly normal for young children to cycle through a city centre independently side by side. Carry on!
If you're not keen on flying then I recommend the ferry to the Netherlands. Cycled to Liverpool Street for the train, dinner and a night's sleep on board and I'll wake up to a full breakfast and then cycle directly onto some lovely smooth cycle tracks at 8am :)

A residential area in Groningen, the Netherlands. Most of the street space is used for trees and seating rather than parking, which creates nicer, greener streets and slows down cars. A one way system (for cars only) ensures these streets can't be used as through driving routes
Protected cycle tracks should be wide, wide enough for people to ride together side by side and for people with larger bikes or assisted mobility devices
Estate agents in the Netherlands often have photos from the windows of the property listed, as it shows what a nice street it is to live on. UK agents rarely do, as it just shows a street filled with parked cars
Bicycle parking garage for staff in a hospital in Nijmegen. Designed so the exits lead directly into the corridors of the hospital. It also has a bicycle repair centre dedicated to the medical staff who can have their bicycle maintained on site whilst they work
Lovely to hear the sound of people on the Cut tonight, what used to be a horrible rat run filled with queueing traffic. Integrates well with the cycleway on Blackfriars Road as well.
Here is what 30 minutes of activity looks like on Vredenburg in Utrecht, which can only be used by people on public transport, walking or cycling. A vision of what Clerkenwell Boulevard could look like if our politicians were as ambitious as the Dutch
Those buses and ambulance must be getting delayed by cycle lanes that don't exist and not the hundreds of empty black cabs in the bus lane that Vincent doesn't have any issue with
Don't believe the lies. This family are far, far safer cycling in this bidirectional cycleway and using his bus stop bypass than weaving around and sharing rubbish bus lanes with motorbikes, taxis and 18 tonne double decker buses
