When I was 8, my family hit some hard times and had to move into a shelter. Since we didn’t have options in South Seattle, we had to uproot and leave our community to find a temporary roof in another part of the city. Today, we made sure this won’t be the case for many in Skyway.

We just passed the Mi’Chance Dunlap Gittens Youth Rights Ordinance in a 9-0 vote! That means young people under 18 in King County will be connected to a public defender when being asked to waive Miranda rights by law enforcement. Thank you to everyone who made this possible 🙌🏾

According to the CDC, the percent of American high school students who report feeling “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” rose from 26% in 2009 to 44% in 2021. In just a decade, hopelessness amongst our youth almost doubled. Highest recorded percentage in history.

I’ve rarely talked about this, but in my 2 years on the Council the number of racist and xenophobic messages, and even threats, I get weekly has been alarming. It’s sad that my own colleague would fuel these attacks for cheap political points in a race that I’m not even in.

Some on twitter have called me anti-growth or NIMBY for saying economic growth needs to benefit everyone, not just those already doing well. Let’s be clear: we should welcome development, but not at the expense of vulnerable communities. Growth without equity is displacement. 1/

Scary example of pedestrian injustice. A dense, low-income apt built right on top of the freeway in Skyway with no pedestrian safety for hundreds of kids, seniors, & people with disabilities. I saw dozens kids getting off the bus with nothing between them and oncoming traffic.
