A few of you have taken issue with me saying Russians may look European they’re not European.
Let me explain.
1. 77% of Russia is in Asia, not Europe. Some people don’t seem to know that.
2. If we consider ‘European’ to be a set of values rather let’s take a look at the World Values Survey which clusters the world into different cultural hubs.
7. Last but not last. Saying somebody is different from you means you acknowledge the difference and respect it. Perhaps that is more important than… thinking everybody is just like you? Food for thought.
After many years at the Institute, we are saying goodbye to our Deputy Director
@FlorenceGaub
today. Thank you Florence, we wish you the best in your new position!
6. Perhaps most importantly: do Russians think they’re European? Some do, some don’t: but they certainly don’t think of themselves as EU European. And that was my point last night.
I have testified in more than 30 cases against ISIS defendants - not a single one ever admitted to having been in it. Instead, I have heard every explanation from 'wanting to study Arabic in Raqqa' to 'accidentally wandered into ISIS territory'.

To those who say: 20 years of state building didn’t work.
It wasn’t 20 years.
It was one year twenty times.
The success of state building hinges on the long-term commitment, defined from the outset, not how many hours you put in.
Avatar 2 makes a classical sci-fi mistake: it gives us modern tech and planets far away, but also 1950s gender and family relations.
Why is it that future imagination always stops at relationships? 🤔

Nachzulesen hier:
I once registered at a conference saying my name and was told ‘your husband hasn’t arrived yet’. I said ‘my husband??’ - ‘It says here Dr Gaub hasn’t arrived yet’.
Before you scream, have a laugh. That’s what I did.
Putin's speech is at 98% about the past, and 2% about the immediate future. I hear no vision, no projection.
We use history whenever we lack legitimacy in the present, are scared of the future, or, worst of all, can't even imagine it.
Beirut was my door to the Arab world.
Beirut is my home away from home.
Beirut is where I go in crisis, and if it was a man I would have married it by now.

As somebody having written quite a bit about coups: this is not a coup.
A coup is an organised, prepared attempt to seize power.
Rioters storming a building isn’t that.
“This Is a Coup. An armed mob has stormed the U.S. Capitol, using violence to stop the lawful certification of the Electoral College vote.” 👉 This Is a Coup - The Atlantic
This space currently feels like sticking the head in an oven of pain and anger.
If I’m silent then because I do not want to take part in increasing either.
Silence might be misunderstood, screaming doesn’t make for understanding either.
