In English we say “Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr.” because we’re conditioned to think of people in terms of gender or status. In Irish we say “A chara” because interactions, even with strangers, are rooted in the assumption of friendship. Gaeilge > Béarla

As a citizen of the Irish state, I am appalled that my government is refusing to recognise the significance of Irish republicans, seeking reunification, winning an election in a place designed to discriminate against Irish identity and nationhood. Other world leaders have done so

Waterford’s Gaeltacht is a small rural community of <2000 people. Against all odds over 1/4 still speak Irish daily there outside school. Dumping unaffordable houses on them as holiday homes for well-off English monoglots is not an answer to the housing crisis, it’s linguicide.

It is insulting to every LGBT member of Sinn Féin for a journalist to give credence to claims that our party might not just tolerates but “orchestrate” homophobia. Please correct your article @oconnellhugh to say “there is no evidence” for such claims. That’s journalism

Michael stole Trevelyan’s corn, and Máire Geoghegan Quinn stole my photo of Trevelyan’s restaurant, but I, being more generous of spirit than Trevelyan, will allow.

How shocking is this restaurant name - do the Raheen Woods hotel owners in Athenry not know about history? @CllrShellyHQ

Want an example of Sinn Féin exerting pressure, forcing a result? Sinn Féin demanded a temporary ban on evictions, FF & FG called it populist. Sinn Féin kept demanding a temporary ban on evictions. FF & FG are now implementing a temporary ban on evictions. #EffectiveOpposition

Are the same southern journalists & political pundits who dismissed Joe Brolly’s words as ‘garbage’ going to say the same about Bernadette McAliskey (thereby proving their point)? Well said Bernadette, it’s time to prepare for the future of Ireland #TommyTiernanShow #Time4Unity

“We’re not like the other parties who see the 1916 Proclamation as a historical document to be left in a museum somewhere. We’re a party who believes this is a living, breathing document, this is what we need to build, this is the Republic for which we stand” #SinnFeinArdFheis22

Seems so minor and you’d take it for granted, but someone fought for this and won. Irish language names with fadas weren’t allowed on trains in Ireland. Many Irish companies still won’t accept them and say you’re “not valid”. There’s no excuse. Every name is valid. #SeoMAinm

@gavreilly It’s also worth noting debate had already been delayed because the Chief Whip sent the Bill to the wrong committee and took over a month to correct his mistake, despite the Gaeltacht Minister demanding the process be sped up. Fun fact, the Gaeltacht Minister is the Chief Whip.

Jack Chambers claiming the EU making Irish a full official language as an achievement of this government is laughably untrue, but particularly galling when his government is currently taking legal action in the courts to block the same language rights for Irish speakers here

Galway City’s new Councillors-in-waiting, Labour’s Helen Ogbu & Sinn Féin’s Aisling Burke. Sinn Féin is back on Galway City Council after 5 years! Galway City East has firmly voted for change, rejecting longstanding councillors who turned to racism to gain votes #le24 #galway
