For the cheap seats… sexual harassment isn’t simply “touching” - asking lab members to rank postdocs attractiveness or if they would date your brother IS sexual harassment. These aspects are always ignored by his defenders.
Big News!
@findlatergroup
is moving to

in Summer 2021. We’ll miss lots about Lubbock, but mainly the friends we’ve made over the last 10 years. Now we look forward to exciting new opportunities & colleagues that await us when we relocate to California!

Professional update 3: I've been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (

Cobalt (II)-Catalyzed Stereoselective Olefin Isomerization: Facile Access to Acyclic Trisubstituted Alkenes

Dan, I don’t think either of us really can speak to all the details of decisions made a couple of decades ago. However, when Dr Karikó says she was told her research was not of faculty caliber that’s on Penn. When she was mocked upon leaving for industry, that’s on Penn. 1/n
official notice of MRI award from

to support our acquisition of a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer! Huge thanks to co-PIs
@RebecaA61689283
@MehmetZBaykara
Jennifer Lu and Yanbao Ma and of course
@ucmerced
for generous cost share contributions (a real team effort!)
School closed until May 4... somehow, the fact it’s May has hit me hard - like it seems so so far away that I just don’t know how I’ll cope. I can’t do 2 kids at home, write papers, teach remotely (for the 1st time), write grants and review papers / proposals. I just can’t.
I'm hiring! Come join us in sunny (and not at all hellaciously hot) Merced! If you're interested in a postdoc in synthetic chemistry, focused on projects related to organometallic catalysis, then please apply!

Incredibly sad news this morning. My phd advisor, Professor Alan H. Cowley FRS, passed away in his sleep at the age of 86. Here are a couple of links to learn a little more about Alan’s remarkable life and career: and
@faherreraur
Only question, not addressed here: were they able to start on time? As the last speaker, if earlier speakers ran long then it would be unfair to cut them off as they had less time than others.
🚨 professional news update 🚨
I’m delighted and honoured to announce that from April I will be the Interim Dean of the School of Natural Sciences. I am excited to work with the fantastic staff, students and faculty across the school as we begin the search for a permanent Dean!
Me: publishes paper
Journal: cool stuff, can you write a review on this topic?
Me: I’d be happy to!
Journal: Rejected - reviewer says topic is too narrow
Me: IT WAS THE TOPIC YOU ASKED ME FOR!
Journal: Yeah, still nah. We’ll transfer it for you - will go to same reviewer 🤬
rant ahead... look away if not interested in NSF GRFP related content..
be wary of well intentioned "I didn't get one and look at me now" tweets... when all they had to fall back on was their Berkeley/Harvard/Caltech PhDs and postdocs to help open doors for them (1/n)
We will be hiring at least one PD in any of 3 areas: main group catalysis, electrosynthesis or, transition metal catalysis. Start flexible but late fall 2021 ideal. DM w/ questions and I’ll share the job ad as soon as it is ready!

Random CV thoughts: I don’t need you to tell me the impact factors of your journal pubs and, if one of your referees is a Nobel prize winner you don’t need to list them as “Prof So-and-So, Nobel Prize winner”
Our
@NSF
funded diffractometer is installed! Thanks
@rigaku
- just some paperwork to get sorted and we can start collecting data on this beastie!
@ucmerced
@UCMChemistry
so some very good news... I won't share all the details as it isn't entirely my news to share... but a small collaborative grant got impact score 20 and 4th percentile in study section this week
@KrishnanYamuna
@CHarmer_MGE
I don’t necessarily disagree with you... but this was your takeaway from this thread!? Right or wrong, the confidential comments box exists - use it or not. But the editor effed up and allowed a junior researcher to be identified and harassed, pretty sure that should be the focus
Congrats to grad student
@Arpita1391
on her new paper! I'm excited to share our latest work in
@Orgmet_ACS
This is a special one, it's my 70th publication and is dedicated to my postdoc advisor Maurice Brookhart on the occasion of his 80th birthday!
Part of the reason I’m so annoyed by this weird AF nature paper… is that we’re doing some really exciting chemistry right now and somewhere deep in my cerebellum I’m telling myself - this is legit worth a shot to science or nature… and then pish like this comes out and I (1/2)
can't reveal the exact details as it is currently in submission - but this was a very cool result using organo electrochemistry to deliver previously inaccessible products :)

Paper rejected; it’s hard publishing in a new area y’all! But, we got really detailed feedback from the reviewers and fast editorial handling… onwards and upwards!
The time I got sprayed head to toe with SiCl4 and ran coughing and spluttering to the safety shower… only to immediately regret that choice (SiCl4 + H2O = HCl) and whip off my clothes down to my undies… did I mention the shower was in the hallway too? 🤦♂️
What is your most unhinged story from grad school?
Mine was probably the time I picked a dead flounder up off the lab floor and then ran to a public bathroom with it in my hands and sobbed over its body in a stall.
My PhD advisor died last year. I'll always be grateful for the time I spent in his lab. This was a surprisingly emotional piece to write in hopes of honouring his legacy. It was also fun to learn a little more about Alan and some of the chemistry (1/n)
I know this will prompt a few "Scottish" jokes... but, I just got prompted in an editorial note to possibly have a native English speaker review my manuscript 🤦♂️🤣🤣
it's officially official, very grateful to receive funding from
@doescience
to look at rare earth element separation! A collaborative effort with

and I'm excited to contribute in sustaining and growing the journal (see: ). 1/2
A very early heads up... we have approval to conduct two searches (assistant prof), one in organic chemistry and one in (experimental) physical chemistry. Hopefully details to follow soon - we are putting the search committees together now!

and when Penn abrogate their responsibility on tenure / retention to NIH that’s on Penn. To celebrate Dr Karikó’s research and Nobel Prize while remaining UTTERLY SILENT on how Penn treated her is criminal. There is no excuse for trying to sweep it under the rug. 2/2
Just finished this book, wonderful lessons from plants but also got me really excited to know how plant biochemistry can help my own research!
@BerondaM
thanks!
A really lovely paper just came out describing iron-catalyzed olefin metathesis… I’d like to say a big thank you to the reviewers who said my proposal to do the very same chemistry would never work (declined by NSF, NIH and ACS-PRF)
Again and again I see phenomenal industrial (pharma and pharma-adjacent) chemists talking up base metal chemistry and the need to move away from precious metals… yet every damn NIH review I get is like… “works just fine with Rh mate”
Professional update 1: As of July 1st I am now the graduate group chair for Chemistry & Chemical Biology
@UCMChemistry
- so if you have questions about graduate studies, how to apply etc. to our amazing campus please get in touch! 1/n
