Wanna 10x your writing skills? Become a master of metaphor. "Metaphor? Like, fluffy poetry stuff?!" Yeah, no... the way it's taught in school is ABYSMAL. 😱 Aristotle wrote, “The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor.” Here's what 90% of us didn't get in class:

Why do we write? There are 2 reasons: 1) To communicate something to others. 2) To communicate something to yourself—to understand. Some people say “writing is thinking,” & that’s true. This means you can get tremendous value from writing something without publishing it.

If you want to get better at writing, write more emails! Not newsletters. Plain-jane 1:1 emails. Use a pen pal or a colleague. ;) Why? The #1 mistake people make when writing, including BESTSELLING authors, is forgetting that writing is just communication—one human to another.

New short post: "Readers are underserved by the publishing industry." For years, I blamed myself for lacking the discipline to read new books. Later, I realized it wasn't *me* who'd gotten worse—it was the publishing industry. More on this topic soon.

At first, digital media (and “screen time” generally) was a source of escape from everyday reality. But now, for a growing group of people, screen time *IS* everyday reality. The pattern is reversing. People now seek real-world entertainment to escape the digital world.

- 3 steps to mastery of a craft: Step 1: Take the rules. Step 2: Break the rules. Step 3: Make the rules. Learn from the old masters -- but once you have, decide how things should be done in the future, and lead by example. All leaders start out as impostors.

(10) Finally, short books are often better for both authors & readers. If it can be said in 100 pages instead of 300, why not do it? The best & brightest readers appreciate it when their time is valued. h/t @p_millerd for the thread idea. more on all these topics soon. :)

All “gurus” who denounce fiction should be shamed, loudly & publicly. Great fiction is a flight simulator for your brain: it helps you practice responding to challenging & extreme situations. Thinking about fictional characters makes *your* character stronger in real life.

@JoshuaLisec Honestly, I learned more from fiction than non-fiction Even though the gurus say not to read fiction, a lesson makes a bigger impact when it's wrapped in a story
