@jenniferdoleac @umich recently updated its policies such that faculty are not allowed to have sexual relationships with undergrads, and cannot sleep with grad students they supervise. I believe violating the policy can be grounds for sanctioning and eventual termination.

Just finished making this figure for a pending update to our age-of-majority paper. Stunning how young justice-involved individuals are when they had their first criminal charge (at least in Michigan). Majority of defendants in a given year had their first charge as teenagers.

Leveraging @UM_CJARS & srvy/admin data linked in FSRDCs, we build population-wide residential and relationship crosswalks, merged with population-wide CJ histories. We find that over 1/3 kids in the US grow up with 1+ exposure events to the CJ system from adults in their HH. 4/12

Outlook is not good. Often we find that parent vs other adult sources of exposure are statistically indistinguishable; same for different types of exposure events (charges vs incar). Cumulative exposure is as, if not more, important than contemp exp for worsening outcomes. 8/12

Historical efforts to quantify # of kids impacted by justice system have been hampered by serious data limitations. @BJSgov provides the most reliable estimates, suggesting roughly 1 in 40 kids in recent decades has a parent in prison at a given point in time in the U.S. 2/12

The relationship btwn exposure and wellbeing varies by the kid’s background. Boys fare worse on educ/cognitive/future crime outcomes. Girls are more likely to become teen parents. High-income kids are much more likely to live with G-parents after exposure. 9/12

Until yesterday, it wasn't clear what financial fines on criminals did to their future offending risk. Did it reduce risk? Unclear! Now, a new paper by @Econ_Mike has closed the gap! Using data from nine natural experiments in five states, it seems fine effects are absent.
