This would be a grave mistake. The Cincinnati Southern Railway is one of the biggest publicly owned assets in the US and it's worth more as a long-term asset than a paycheck now, especially as the US slowly embraces more rail service over the coming decades nationwide

@nthony_i The deal would double the Norfolk Southern rent to $56M/yr until 2051, when NS would own the line. This doesn't net the city $1.6 billion, but really $800M and loses ownership. NS wouldn't propose a purchase if it didn't save them money. We're getting the raw end of the deal.

On primary night this summer, @lolonghi and I had desks next to Gary and spent the entire night laughing as we nervously waited for election results to come in. Afterwards much of the election night team went out for drinks. It was the most fun I've ever had in a newsroom.

Had some great conversations with religious leaders yesterday. One common thread? This rise in evangelical policy always leaves out the perspectives of Jews, Muslims and other non-Christians. "This ruling removes a religious choice for Jews," a rabbi said. New from me: ⬇️

Fortunately any sale requires a ballot initiative, meaning Cincy voters would get a say (if it comes to that). It also requires action in the Ohio Leg, but with Ohio conservatives' love of privatization and disdain for cities (Issue 2), that wouldn't be tough for NS.

@nthony_i The deal would double the Norfolk Southern rent to $56M/yr until 2051, when NS would own the line. This doesn't net the city $1.6 billion, but really $800M and loses ownership. NS wouldn't propose a purchase if it didn't save them money. We're getting the raw end of the deal.
