Before you say, "they allow exceptions!" the GA law allows for exceptions for "medical emergencies", I read the text. Best case, in GA, I'll need an attorney to help me make the case that brain tumor treatment is "emergent". I should not need an attorney to treat my patients.

I am honored to announce that I was awarded the Daniel Louis Barrow Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery
@emoryneurosurgery
. I would like to thank my family, my mentors and mentees, colleagues, friends, and the philanthropic support that made this possible:
24 future Black Neurosurgeons may not seem like a lot, to you, but when you consider that there are only 234ish
#match2022

spots AND only 8 Black people matched last year (and no more than 12 in any one year over the last 12 years) - this is a BIG deal
#Neurosurgery
understood the assignment! ASBN congratulates the record number of newly matched Black Neurosurgeons in
#Match2022
-24 and counting- easily the most ever in one intern class ! But recruitment is the first step- ASBN will strive to ensure retention as well! ✊🏿
I am a neurosurgeon and a scientist. I am not a politician. However, in today's world, it bears repeating that immigrants are a source of great strength to the United States - not a weakness. Signed, a Ghanaian-American with birthright citizenship.
26/ One more thing - when this happened, I truly did not know if telling anyone would help. Like, sure, someone might care, but what would they *do*? Dear future interviewee: Tell me. I will care, and I will find a way to help.
#BlackInTheIvory
Finally! Unblinded today. I received both doses of the

My son, as we're passing the

sign, "This was done by a Black person or someone who likes Black people, right Daddy?". Me: "Yup." Hidden in this statement is the knowledge, at 7, that there are people who don't like Black people. Do you publicly show support?
I am honored to announce that today,
@POTUS
@WhiteHouse
@WHOSTP
announced my pending appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board. Truly never imagined that I would have an opportunity to help inform our nation's cancer research program.
@NBTStweets
25/ Now, many will say that I fabricated this story. Oh well. I hate creative writing. No way I could have *ever* come up with that. I hope that things are better today. But I shudder to think about what interviewees will be asked about George Floyd this fall.

Last night, I had a chance to treat my friend and mentor, the
@EmoryNeurosurg
legend, Nelson M. Oyesiku, MD, PhD, to dinner before he leaves to take the Chair at
@UNCneurosurgery
. I will be forever grateful for his impact on my career. Thank you for everything, Nelson!
I benefited from

in college and medical school. I am not afraid to say so, because that does not mean that I was not qualified (see

). Many others benefit from the education I received, including my diverse patients and mentees. 1/2
The American Society of Black Neurosurgeons, Inc. (ASBN), formally established in
#BlackHistoryMonth
of 2021, improves public health by supporting Black Neurosurgeons and enriching the equity and integrity of neurosurgical care (pre-COVID19 picture)
Hey all, I am here to say that I'm a solid 2-3 months behind on mentorship requests in my inbox. I am trying my best to cycle back through, but while I am doing so, if you have someone interested in neurosurgery, please have them do the following things:🧵
If you are non-medical, please be aware that your timeline is about to be flooded with the joy of a bunch of gratification-deferring over-achievers finding out, after 21+ years of school, where a computer has assigned them for the next 3-7 years of their life. It's

22/ Here’s the thing – I believe in my heart of hearts that that Chairman thought he was about to solve Katrina. He was going to win the Nobel Peace Prize for this idea. He was trying to help! And that was the best he could come up with. The ignorance was staggering.
So, I just heard of this service that allows you to record and share the pronunciation of your name, and I am *so* excited to maybe be introduced properly at some point in the future:
Please read this. . She is a good friend of mine. She is a Black Woman, an attorney who studied biology
@Stanford
. She almost died despite multiple trips to the hospital for legitimate concerns, because of racism.
10/ He rambles now a bit in set up, “And I was just thinking, and I wanted to get your opinion, you specifically, what if we got a bunch of *cruise ships* and we sent them to Africa.”
#BlackintheIvory
Congratulations to all those who have matched! To those that have not - as someone who has experienced (repeated) rejections and failures, please know that this is not the end of your journey, but a challenging start to a new path. Mourn the loss, then prepare for the road ahead.
As I do every year around this time, I am reflecting on the match process and where it falls short, particularly for applicants that are underrepresented in medicine. One change I would *love* to see is the elimination of sealed recommendation letters. They should all be open 1/8
8 or so months into the pandemic, I finally have a webinar setup that I like. I prefer standing for talks - gives me the feeling of being at a real podium, able to project more easily. LED light for lighting (cheaper than ring, and available online).
I am SO excited to finally share with you a manuscript that I have been working on for a solid 3 years (and 1 month): Cytokine Microdialysis for Real Time Immune Monitoring in Glioblastoma Patients.

15/ Cruise ships! To replace the slave ships they came on? Did we not have Jumbo jets in 2005? Were their ancestors issued round trip boat tickets when they were stolen from their homes – sorry, no air trips allowed? Was this a joke? Was it a test? How can I respond?
Overheard in the Operating Room today:
Scrub: Play a Tribe Called Quest!
Circulating nurse: What's "A Tribe Called Quest?" A group, a person? An album?
Scrub: I'm not sure, my husband said I should listen to them, said they have a nice vibe
Me:💀💀💀
16/ Many will criticize my response, and I am not proud of it, and I ask your forgiveness, in advance. Just know that I said what I said knowing that the person that I was speaking to had no conception whatsoever what was right or wrong, and yet had the power to destroy my life.
14/ So, I compose myself, take a beat. This man somehow has completely missed the fact that he is talking about sending Black Americans to a continent many have never visited – using cruise ships – when so many died on their way to America.
I keep waiting for the media to cover Amy Coney Barrett's words about her children. There are 7, so there's actually a decent sample size - listen to her description of her Black children versus her White children. If you hear nothing wrong, listen again.

12/ "What do you think?"
#BlackintheIvory
(really, I would love to hear what you would say in this scenario - many of your answers would probably be much better than mine)
21/ But I never did. To this day, I’ve probably only told the story out loud, maybe, 10 times? In part because I knew people would ask who the chair was (NOT Emory), and I had no desire in getting into a he said/she said.
17/ I said: “Well, sir… a lot of parts of Africa are quite poor. So, if we send a bunch of people who are now poor to poor countries, they might not do so well.” I wait for my career to end.

Briefly,
@VictoriaESanch1

@StanfordSurgery
had to out recruit several other top surgery programs to get her, and I suspect the same for the rest of the class.

. Congrats, all!
20/ When I was back at Penn, I confided in a few of my classmates at a radiology small group section I had. I think I told it in a haha isn’t that crazy way. I believe they were suitably horrified? And suggested that I report it.
Wouldn't it be great if people you worked with - leaders, even - knew when they couldn't give 100 percent, publicly acknowledged this, stepped back, and gave other very capable people a chance to perform, for the good of the team?

all day.
13/ Mind you, I am a Black man on his 1st

interview trip. Life long dream. And I am so close, and I have heard all the stories about how the chairs talk to each other, how one bad interview can ruin you for the whole season, and I do not have another interview scheduled.
Dr Mbabuike, Dr Ashley, and I are proud to announce our webinar series wtih

The CNS is launching a new special webinar series, Black Lives in Neurosurgery: A 3-part Webinar Series. Join us on Thursday, July 16 for the first event, Mobilizing for Racial Equity: A Seminar Addressing Racism and Implicit Bias with Dr. Uché Blackstock.
19/ I spent the rest of the interview in a complete haze. I sleepwalked through it. I didn’t tell any of the other interviewees, not even the one I was rooming with that night.
I knew, but I did not really appreciate the tension I had been carrying until I drove past midtown Atlanta, saw people waving the American flag, and felt, for the first time in 4 years, *safe*. We must never forget the losses, but we must celebrate the wins. Congratulations, USA.
24/ And you know what? I ranked that program. I ranked them last, after having 13 interviews and feeling good about them, but I decided that I would rather train under that guy than not be a neurosurgeon.
5/ That was not too unexpected, actually, because my family featured heavily in my personal statement, as I draw great inspiration from my immigrant parents, who sacrificed so much for my siblings and I to succeed
23/ Later, in residency at Emory, I would encounter a Black woman surgery resident who said that she knew said chair as a medical student and thought he was super cool and extremely supportive, so much so that she almost went into

A couple of key takeaways: 1/3
11/ “I was just thinking that they’ve lost their homes and their jobs, but if they went to Africa, they wouldn’t have to deal with all the poverty, and the rebuilding and the hurricanes, and the racism, well, not really racism, but the poverty and stuff that they deal with here.”
1/ Hey all, a story that I've been telling for years has finally been published in
@SciReports
! "GL261 luciferase‑expressing cells elicit an anti‑tumor immune response: an evaluation of murine glioma models" The full open access article is here:
#btsm
3/ I started off with a pretty routine interview. Went great, actually! We chatted about my research, my time at Penn, stuff I might be able to accomplish at this department if I matched. I felt really good at the time - this is actually happening! I'll be a neurosurgeon!
It's a beautiful day in Nairobi for the first day of
#SNOSSA2023
! Getting started with neuro oncology and Neurosurgery breakouts. Special thanks to my Neurosurgery colleagues of
@NSTumorSection

@SNOSSA1
2/ I was at a good medical school, Penn Med, was president of the med student government, good clerkship scores, but not AOA - felt good about interviewing, overall. But it was early October, and it was my only interview offer at the time, so I was nervous
Two years ago, if you told me that we would be having this event, for

#2022CNS
@cns_update
annual meeting, I would not have believed you. But thanks to the leadership of Drs. William Ashley,
@NSMbabuike_MD
, Dr. Eden, here we are.
#neurosurgery
4/ My next interview was with the chair. Game face on, I walk in. The chair says several complimentary things about my academics, grades, leadership, etc. Then he says something weird - your family is from Ghana, right? Yes! I reply...
OK, now, this one is hilarious. If this medical student still wants to be a neurosurgeon after "the talk" about how terrible our lifestyle is, over and over again by friends and colleagues (and it's really not that bad), they have what it takes.
6/ So he goes on, “You were born in America?” “Yes!” I reply again. “But you lived in Ghana?” “Yes, for six years.” “So you have a unique perspective on things, don’t you” “Yes, I guess so? I have seen a few different things.”
Calling a time out on my professional veneer. I lost one of my very best friends on Wednesday, suddenly. Found out Thursday morning, and, honestly, I am not OK and can't fake it. The world has lost one if it's very brightest stars. I miss you, brother.
Please welcome
@NSMbabuike_MD
to Twitter! Dr. Mbabuike is a vascular neurosurgeon, and she is a trailblazer as a Black neurosurgeon. She's a leader of our recent efforts as Black Neurosurgeons in the past year. Great article on Black women in neurosurgery, Dr. Mbabuike!
8/ Instead, he says, “I’ve been watching a lot of the news about Hurricane Katrina” – back story – this is October of 2005, and Hurricane Katrina has devastated New Orleans, having a particularly heavy toll on the Black community. Now, I am on high alert, heart pounding. “Yeah?”
Me, after realizing there is only 1 week left to submit an abstract to

TL:DR - every White child is called smart and/or has a specific academic/professional talent highlighted. The Black children are highlighted as having been saved, the girl is strong, the boy is happy go lucky. This is the sort of subtle racism that we tolerate in polite society.
7/ “Yes, you are exactly the person I wanted to talk to about an idea I have. I would love to get your input.” “Sure, what did you want to talk about” At this point, I think I’m more intrigued than worried – are we going to talk travel? One of his children living abroad?
